Academy of St Martin in the Fields | Londonderry Air "Danny Boy" (Grainger)

Remembering our founder Sir Neville Marriner on his birthday, 15th April, with a piece that was close to his heart, Londonderry Air.
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields filmed this performance at Blackheath Halls in south London in August 2020 - the first project the orchestra did together after the country went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

One can understand Britten's being besotted w Percy Grainger's music, so individualistic, so merry, tender, & nostalgic at once. Sensitive, free, melodic... all that speaks of "a time there was". What beauty! Many thanks.

Am 9. Oktober 2016 gastierte die Academy in der Philharmonie Köln. Genau 7 Tage zuvor war Sir Neville Marriner verstorben.
Als Zugabe spielte das Orchester dieses wunderschöne Lieblingswerk des Maestros im Gedenken - kein Dirigent am Pult, lediglich ein Strauß roter Rosen wurde dort platziert.
Alle 2000 Zuhörer waren ergriffen und nicht nur ich hatte Tränen in den Augen.
Das werde ich nie vergessen. 🥹
