    Boy, I love Valparaiso. Near Neruda's home I started to climb the hill really high so I could see the entireness of the city, and some dogs from nearby homes followed me and bite me(nothing serious though), probably domestic dogs but still not vaccinated. I didn't took the chance and went to Valaparaiso medical center/kinda hospital thing. Waited a couple hours to get Rabies shot and went home. I mean, if that is not the true Valparaiso tourism experience, I don't know what it is.
    And yeah, don't accept a ride from strangers if you can take a bus.

    Every episode in this series always makes me think. Some things you talk about on this channel have been comparisons/concept that I've noticed but I've never really delved into, while others are rather obvious ideas that have somehow never crossed my mind at all. Or probably anyone's mind, for that matter. I love Rare Earth because it's not just some travel documentary talking about strange places/people/foods around the world, it also delves into the philosophy of these things - the WHY and not the WHAT. It's original, with original ideas and original views. I wish you had your own show on a platform like Netflix, but I'd hate for you to lose any of your originality or creativity.
    Keep it up, man. This content tops anything I've seen on the internet in awhile.

    The late, cool *Anthony Bourdain* would kiss you for this. His favorite hallmarks of a great place to visit included discriptors - gritty, edgy, authentic, even dangerous.
    Roughly a month after the publish date of this video, Bourdain took his own life. I discovered this video weeks later on June 29th and just subbed to this channel a few days ago.
    Seems like serendipity, but I won't push it. I'm still trying to reconcile how such a talented, beloved personality could be in such a dark place, when millions of us imagine that we'd love to be him or have his life, but we are alas, the sum of our experiences and I have never lived on the edge - not purposely.

    As a Liverpool gal I always find it interesting to hear different nationalities talk about the Beatles. Random fact of the day, my first flat was above the Casbah Coffee Club and my landlord was original Beatles drummer Pete Best. Even though the Casbah was closed to the public other than one in a few years special events I used to get lots of tourists knocking on my front door! My parter played guitar in the Pete Best Band and traveled all over the world and I was regularly in the Casbah for private events (New Years eve 1999 was a fun one) under the ceiling stars hand painted by John, Paul, George and Pete. I always felt very strange to be a part of the living history of the place.

    I can definitely relate to this. I miss how easy and accessible Miami was. You can find parking easily, it generally feels safe, and it's very welcoming to tourists and immigrants from all over the world.
    However, it is bland, looks the same everywhere outside downtown core/wynwood/Allapatta etc. Most of it is suburban sprawl or beach front high rises.
    And despite being a place where culture meets, its hardly a place where it is made. It is the land of the bland night club.
    Compare it to Buenos Aires, where things are a lot more inconvenient, the infrastructure is not nearly as robust, there are constant strikes, and parking is a nightmare, and violence is common place (well, not nearly as much as Rio, where I'm from, but still).
    The capacity this city has to generate Art and Culture is beyond anything Miami could ever hope for. A short walk down the street has so much history, art, cusine, life.
    I believe adversity creates art. It is the spark we need to truly express our selves beyond "just doing it."
    The greatest artists tend to be troubled, haunted people. But these skeletons are exactly what makes their art "cool" or "real", what gives it "soul". Compare it to "bland" and "manufactured" experiences (like Miami) and you hear people say "he doesn't really know what it is like, he hasn't had to live it in his skin", "he's a poser, he's a plastic".
    I guess what I'm trying to say is that Bieber will never be a true "bad boy" no matter how much he tries, because it's all "made up" in the eyes of the audience, and ultimately, we make cool what it is. And one of the requisites is that it be "real".

    • @jacac
      @jacac Před 6 lety +5

      Once I was having an argument in Valparaíso with a friend that doesn’t like Buenos Aires, a city that I absolutely love. He said: it’s depressing to see such a beautiful city going through that stage of decay. I said: then you can’t say that and still like Valpo. His answer shocked me: Valparaíso is not decadent, but a party over the ruins”.

      SmileRobot Probably a reference to violence against women and the chilean feminist movement. Up until recently there were catholic schools for ladies that taught their teenage students that female orgasms did not exist and that masturbation was unnecessary for women and a sin. Plus, women have started to come forward and stand against the abuse, violence and repression they've endured for centuries in this quite conservative country. Femicide has been a very sad and delicate topic for about a decade, since it was instituted as a crime.

    This is interesting timing as the content resonates in multiple ways. For one it's interesting to explore a general cocept of 'coolness'. But I am also on vacation in Indonesia right now (I'm from Europeand as white as it gets) and I love visiting chaotic cities, seeing and taking pictures of hidden temples. I just got a rabies shot because of a stray dog and there is a part of me that thinks this will make an impressive story. But I VISIT these places. I STAY in a nice clean resort outside of town where I can order cocktails, surf youtube and look at rice fields and green Palm forest from the clean luxury of the resort. I will tell the story of getting a rabies shot but I sure as hell don't want to get Rabies and whenthe chance that a stray dog may have bitten me (a little) dawned on me I actually freaked out a bit.
    I want to feel like an explorer and someone who really experiences other countries. But deep down I also still crave the artificial safety and comfort that resorts and spas offer european tourists like me. I think you are definately on to something with the duality of popularity/safety and coolness/danger/edge.
    Great vdieo as always : )

    • @christianmorales5472
      @christianmorales5472 Před 5 lety +4

      FelKor Your story reminded me of all the Germans I met when I was living in Germany. Most of them had travelled to 3rd world countries or did so in the time I met them and they all were safety-junkies, something I could never really understand, having been born and raised in a mildly dangerous 3rd world country slum. It seemed to me as though they wanted to walk along the beach but ran from the wetness of the waves, like children do. And this here is the reason they were like that: they want to see and partially experience it because it's 'real' and cool, but don't want to live it, because it's too dangerous and uncomfortable.

    Edgy, artsy and something us CZcams hipsters want. But at the end your channel co-excist with Planet Earth and Blue Planet.
    Keep up the good work! Every new movie you give me gousebumbs

    Love the Video. As a Chilean im guilty of the same crime, I go to valpo but stay in viña. Mostly in the winter thoug, Viña in the summer is a no no for me. Summers I go to zapallar. I really hope you guys had the chance to go to zapallar, for me is one of the most beautiful and calm places in Chile.

    The difference is that we've come to see 'action' as cool. Rather than what it is, dangerous. We can't change what something is but we can decide how we see it.

    actually, crime is higher in viña del mar because it seems safer, but of course for people who look obviously like tourists and easy targets, yeah, valparaíso isn't Safe. But! viña del mar has the biggest slum in the country so it's only clean and safe if you don't look closely. i do agree with the interpretation, but only if you're a foreigner. i have a totally different experience and point of view

    Going through all of your videos. Most are very thought provoking. I live near New Orleans, LA,. I couldn't resist thinking that you described almost perfectly the relationship between the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain (Vena) and the Southshore (New Orleans/Valparaiso). However, most people still stay on the Southshore in spite of the "sharp edge".

    It is so great to look at my own country through your foreign eyes. In this series you've captured so much of what Chile feels like without any of it feeling phony or excessively manufactured. I can really feel your love for the country that raised me and it's easy to tell you know it past the usual tourism-guide front. Thanks for showing Chile to the world, both it's beauty and it's pain.

    Great video. For music lovers You need that standard of clean/sanitized/accessible music its necessary for the edgier music to seem different and interesting. we complain about how same sounding/safe pop music is but it actually strengthens my connection and appreciation for my favorite music that happens to sounds less safe. It’s kinda a eternal internal contradiction people who love music have. I’ve given this thought over the last year or so.
