Have I been wrong about the Porsche 996?

  • It's true - I was once a Porsche 996 hater. Can this car change my mind?
    It's a super well sorted Gen 1 996, with suspension upgrades and all the right aesthetic upgrades. I've come around to the 996 over the years. After all, it's a 911 and its design challenged Porsche's evolution not revolution mantra.
    Maybe this car will make me fall in love with the 996? Oh and the car has a little secret...

      I also hated the 996 until I bought a 997 in 2008. After owning the 997 for a while, I began to appreciate the streamlined shape of the 996. Now, a decade later, my earlier disdain for the 996 seems a distant memory. In fact, I completely forgot my hate and recently bought a clean 996 cab with a tiptronic and I love it.

I really have come to respect it and after sitting in a 992 ( not that I can afford one) at a Porsche dealership realised how small nimble and beautifully analog it feels. @Last Rasp, Love your channel. I was also a hater of the 996 like most Porschephilles when it dared to push its way to the forefront of the 911 evolutionary chain. After an air cooled 3.2 Carrera, my next 911 was to be a 964 or 993, it seemed the natural progression for me. All these years later, I recently purchased my 'keep for life' 911. When I finally came over to the water cooled dark side, I was hell bent on buying a 997. But I slowly fell in love with the 996. Cheeky bastard with those bloody fried egg headlights, cheap plastic interior and IMS issues. My 1999 Carrera C4 is a minter, and it was a sure bet I would buy it the day I flew down to view, test drive & inspect. Everything sorted, IMS retro upgrade included. With only 64,000kms on the clock, it looks & feels like new. For me, it had to be a 996.1. It really is an uncomplicated, elegant & classic design. Thanks Pinky Lai, you got it just right.

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Allan. Your 996 sounds great! Lots of similarities with the 964 in the way the car handles etc. Would have to say I much prefer the sound of the 964. I put that down to a combination of the air cooled engine and also the manual transmission makes shifts much more punchy and immediate. While the horsepower numbers are higher for the 996 I didn't think it felt super fast - think the straight line performance would be similar. The steering the 996 was much nicer than my 964 - I suspect that may be on account of me having the C4.

      @@lastrasp thank you for your thoughts. I’ve recently acquired a 964 as well in C2 trim manual. It’s been modified by previous owner and I’m still learning to drive the car (first time owning an aircooled model). Agree it definitely sounds better. I used to think 996 is small compared to modern cars but next to it the 964 feels even more diminutive. Everything feels just a bit more raw and visceral compared to 996. Both great cars and I feel so lucky to be able to experience both!

I hated 996 and as soon as I got in it, I was wondering what in the heck was I thinking!? Also, the headlights are starting to grow on me, they almost are starting to look modern... I like the headlights that do not have the orange/yellow turn signal lens. All clear looks best.

      Cheers Rodney. While I still believe the headlights were an unwanted departure from the iconic frog eye headlights the 911 had always been famous for, I believe that history - including me - will judge them more kindly. They’re actually a very cool looking thing and my favourite angle of this car is directly front on.

Those two things that costed me less than $60 improved appearance of the car by 20%. in my opinion. There is nothing else I would change on it, it’s perfect the way it is.

    Loved your video Andy, I found it very informative thoughtful.
    I have a 2004 996 Manual Carrera Cabrio myself and I think it's an absolute hoot to drive. I'm over the funny headlights and I think it's a crap reason not to buy a 996. Mine has Black 19" wheels upgrade, Exhaust and Evolution Airbox upgrade. It makes a cracking sound when you cold start and even creates an overrun crackle when changing gears. Im not sure if the suspension is original but feels like it needs new shocks/coil overs? I get lots of nods from bystanders when they hear the noise from the unusual exhaust sound when I drive it around even at low speeds. I would like to add a GT3 rear wing like your friend has done on his. As you said in your video Andy, it is a real 911 and a significant car in the history of Porsche 911's. I previously had a 2005 Boxster S Tiptronic and loved it also. that gearbox can be fun when you use it well, especially on drives as I have on the Great Ocean Road. and Otway Ranges.

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  Před 3 lety

      Love your thinking Antony! As a design tragic I couldn't understand Porsche's decision to change the headlights back when the 996 was released. Of course we now know it was the beginning of a real change in their production techniques - part of a shift to more efficient methods of production. But beyond the practical reasons for the introduction of the fried eggs, ultimately I believe the years have been kind to them and I like them both as a piece of industrial design and as well as the fact that they make the 996 as a stand out 911. You car sounds like a great example and it sounds like you love it too. That sounds like a win to me!

Got pulled for speeding by a cop with a dash-mounted radar gun....126Kph in a 100Kph zone, whoops! He was a good bloke though, soon sussed out that I was a pom and said as long as I didn't come back to the state of Victoria within 12 months the ($180!! ticket) would be disregarded. Let's just say that the next time my wife and visited Aus it was NSW!! Haven't been arrested yet. Mind you, that was 1998. Loving the 911 vibe, current wheels an Iris blue 6-speed manual 1996 993 Carrera 2. Had a 964 Carrera 4 back in the 90's. Couple of 944s (Lux and an S2), 928S4 and GTS plus 2.5 and 2.7 986 and 2.7 987 Boxster. All lovely motors in their different ways. Have crossed to the dark side with a few Ferrraris (328GTB, 360 Modena, F355 Berlinetta and recently a 456GT) but still love that raw air-cooled flat 6 vibe! Haha. Love this response! I can't quite agree that tippers are more fun than manuals but I'm not going to argue. If that's your experience, that's brilliant!

    There are reasons why I wouldn't buy a 996, but the shape of the headlights wouldn't be one of them. To my eyes, the headlights of the 996.1 are beautifully resolved, in fact better than the modified headlights that came with the 996.2. As others have pointed out, one of the best things about the 996 (and the succeeding 997) is its compact size. Later models of the 911 have grown a tad too large for my liking.

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  Před 2 lety +1

      Agree on all points. I think the initial negative response came from the fact that the frog eye headlights were such a part of the 911's design DNA and the fried eggs represented a big departure. But as a standalone design element, they work really well. the size of a 996 or 997 is definitely an appealing factor. By comparison, the 991 definitely feels big - especially on tighter, more technical twisties.

    Super video. The quality is amazing!
    Two questions since I’m considering doing / changing it at my 996:
    - is this GT3 body kit aftermarket or OEM? In case aftermarket, how is the fitment and where did your friend purchase the kit?
    - I see that there’s no airbag light on the dash, despite having a non-airbag steering wheel? How did your friend fix that? And are the indicated stalks going back to ‘neutral’ after turning?
    Apologies for the detailed questions.
    Regards from Europe!

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey thanks for the comment! The body kit is all OE. I believe it was sourced through local second hand sellers as items became available.
      Not sure how he solved the airbag light - suspect that’s a fix an auto electrician could make. And no, the indicator doesn’t turn itself off 😂

      @lastrasp  Před rokem

      No doubt that's true. That said, this wasn't a vid comparing the manual vs the tip. Of course the manual wins! For me it was about trying a 996 and learning that a well set up 996 is a fantastically fun car (that would of course be enhanced with a manual transmission). Thanks for the comment 👌🏼

      @@lastrasp We love this car. Could never understand why people hated on it. Nobody thought this way when we purchased it. I think in another 20 years, it will have a comeback like the 914. I think people will revear this car because it is the start of modern porches. Its also a very simple care mechanically compared to all the tech in the new ones. I also believe the simple lines will become classic. Not to mention much bigger and heavier. I plan to have Jake from flatsix mod the engine to 3.8L and install nickies and then hand it down to the grand kids...

    Nice vid mate and yes the tiptronic is a blast particular between 4000-7000rpm and it still shifts faster than a manual (plus you don’t bang your left knee on the dash when shifting). Wouldn’t swap mine for a manual, but agree the paddles would make a definite improvement as would (for me Kw3 coil overs) and Pilot Sport tyres. So put my 996 in your next SE Melb/Gippy drive and have a look yourself 👍

    • @lastrasp
      @lastrasp  Před 3 lety +1

      Interesting that you'd prefer the tip over the manual. For me a manual would have made this car pretty much perfect. Agree, the damping you get from KW V3s definitely provides a more sophisticated level of damping than something like a Koni sport shock. Will organise a Sunday run at some point soon for sure.

      I owned a PDK (991.1 C2S) and loved it to be honest. Really enjoyed how rapid the shifts were - something the tipper isn't able to compete with in my view. That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the tip once you get used to it.
