For example, in your mentioned Yoruba/Dahomey area, they have many ways to refer to it: "okpe", "jijere", "omuti ebo" etc. In my own language it's a whole different set of long phrases which indicate a variety of the process. However, this tradition is uniform throughout coastal West and Central Africa.

The zangbeto phenomenon is real. Spiritualism explains it as a materialized spirit within the costume. In true cases, there must be a medium of physical effects nearby to provide the essential 'fluid' (also called ectoplasm) for the phenomenon to occur.
This doesn't mean that there aren't cases where the whole ritual is faked, to attract tourists.
The real phenomenon is true, but quite rare and demands special circumstances to occur perfectly.
