  • 24 years later and this still gives us a sinking feeling. This is the actual radio call from the Exxon Valdez to Coast Guard, reporting the oil spill.
Released on the 24th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, this two-minute video reminds us of the dangers and costs that oil tankers and pipelines pose to our coastal waters.
Produced by the Coastal First Nations (www.coastalfirs...), the video opens with Exxon Valdez Captain Joe Hazelwood's radio call to Coast Guard, accompanied by The Sound of Silence, by Simon and Garfunkel. It concludes with a simple message: "Don't be silent. Vote for an oil-free coast."
Paul Simon's music label granted the rights to use the song for a small honorarium after the Coastal First Nations wrote to him personally, telling him about the Great Bear Rainforest and the danger that oil tankers pose to the coastal communities that live here.
    Please share far and wide!

I live in Victoria B C , ex commercial Fisher, I had friends in the Part of Alaska ruined by the EXXon Valdez oil spill, there is not any significant harvesting of any seafood now. We are being asked to support the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipelines and tankers. all to enrich the foreign owned Pipelines and to export the tar sands oil to Asia. I support the Coastal First Nations in their campaign, The Video was aired on this Hour has 22 minutes as a add, last night, a very good placement, money well spent.

Long term, oil doesn't have to be a necessity. Right now though, well, try traveling more than a short commute without using gas (or an insanely expensive version of clean energy). It doesn't work with our current infrastructure. Hopefully we can shift from our focus on oil, but right now we need it. As for the route, I was just talking about shipping from Alaska along that coast south. Maybe that specific route in the video isn't used, but I know we ship along B.C. out of necessity.

I like how they say how many jobs would be lost if another oil tanker spill happened, but fail to mention the other side of the coin. How many jobs would be lost if they cut the transportation of oil along that crucial route? Until we can get a well-built pipeline all the way down, we need those tankers for our economy, as does B.C. Oil is a necessity right now that has to be kept safe, not tossed out altogether.

The fact is, the channel out of Kitimat is smaller than the channel that the Exxon Valdez ran aground in. The boats that would be leaving Kitimat would be as much as 10 times larger than the Exxon Valdez. Needless to say you don't need a degree in statistics to know that something will go wrong. And that's without the fact that Endbridge spills oil like that's the industry's goal. They haven't even clean up plan for this yet!

If we start subsidizing renewable technology instead of oil, it doesn't have to be short term either. We only need it because no one is willing to change their lifestyle. Without clean water or air we'll have bigger problems than getting from point A to B under budget. Yeah, along the coast and out of Vancouver are different than out of Kitimat. Those are narrow channels are the water is rough. A spill would be inevitable and devastating. And we have no way of cleaning it up afterwards.

Dunno, I expect they're projections and extrapolations from the Valdez spill as it would impact the BC coastline - reasonable techniques commonly used for cost assessment. It's a bit of a red herring, however, to pursue the validity numbers as if they're the thrust of the argument here; they're not. Oil is toxic, it tends to kill what it covers, these tankers and pipelines carry extraordinary amounts of oil - making them a dire threat. You don't need to do any math to figure this one out.

They wouldn't be cutting transportation in that route right now. There are currently no tankers in or out of that channel. And for good reason, these are some of the most dangerous waters on the planet. What good is a strong economy if we don't have clean air or water? If you're ever wondering if econ or the environment is more important, try counting your money while holding your breath. Oil is DOES NOT have to be a necessity.

has nothing whatsoever to do with this threat

I fully support moving away from fossil fuels, but corn is not the answer - biofuels made from corn are incredibly inefficient (water, land, and carbon intensive) and they jack up food prices exponentially, exacerbating poverty and leading to deforestation and soil erosion as more land is converted to cash crop agriculture. TElectric cars, solar energy, and next-generation batteries are the technologies we should be investing in.
