This is a Christian Hymn based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg in Monsteras, Sweden in 1885. How cool is that.
Super cool!
"How Great Thou Art" is a Christian hymn based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg (1859-1940) in Mönsterås, Sweden, in 1885. It was translated into German and then into Russian. It was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own.
I am 66 years old and I grew up singing this hymn in church.
Wow. I loved your comment. Thank you for sharing.
Love hearing Adam Rupp's beautiful tenor. And that double bass drop at the end!
I felt it in my gut! Hahaha
This is so breathtaking. "It is Well With my Soul" is my favorite gospel song, and I love the way they slipped a bit of it in here.
It is Well With my Soul is my very favorite hymn. I requested it at my Son's funeral (he was only 21) because I knew God had him and I had to remember that it was well with my soul to know he was with him!
There is an amazing live version of this called "HOME FREE How Great Thou Art (Kearney MO)". They sing live after a concert was cancelled due to a thunderstorm, standing on a picnic table (no amps, mics., etc.) accompanied by thunder, lightning and flickering lights.
That must have been so amazing.
Hey Recky, this is about as good as vocal harmony can get. Others have already pointed out the songs origins but I can answer where they were. They were in Europe for a music conference, and they saw this spot, with the Church, and called their film people & arrangements were made to do this song they had worked on the studio recordings for....they bought a drone & voila, the new video of How Great thou Art. This is both...it's a love song to God. This was filmed in the Austrian Alps, not far from Salzburg, where The Sound of Music was filmed.
Amazing scene! Loved the entire thing
A Christian hymn for sure. Very beautiful scenery. It was filmed in Austria
I think this is one of the best versions of this song. Tim's bass really carries the song. I just found Home Free last year & love these 5 talented guys. And the scenery is awesome filmed in the beautiful Austrian Alps (my dad comes from that area).
Just beautiful!!
Adam Chance carried the bass most of the time.
Yes this IS one of their BEST 5 part harmonies. Filmed in the Austrian Alps. Super great reaction Recky!😍
Thank you !! Kind words is always a warm blanket on a cold day.
They also snuck in a few measures of
It Is Well With My Soul
"It Is Well With My Soul" is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Hymns No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships.
Genre: Hymn
Melody: "Ville du Havre" by Philip Bliss
Meter: 11.8.11.9 with refrain
Written: 1873
Horatio Spafford was moving his family to America but he took a ship alone to get things ready for his wife and children to come.
After they were out at sea, a storm came and all of his family was killed.
He wrote this song in great sorrow, knowing that he was the only one left but realizing that Jehovah
was still with him...
With this he wrote these words.
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
But, Lord, â??tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Even so, it is well with my soul.
I understand how it is to "feel" music. There isn't always a need for words to describe how it connects with you. That's why music is a universal language. Sometimes the sound transfers straight to your soul even if the song is in a language that you don't know.
This was probably the 2nd song I heard from Home Free and I’ve been a fan ever since! Thanks for your reaction!
Glad you enjoyed it
This is one of my most favorite church hymns......I feel the spirits so much in my heart....."then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee...how great thou art, how great thou art". How can a person not be moved? And Recky....it is both a Christian song and a love song......it is a love song of Christ and all He has given us!
I agree this is their best video filmed in Austrian alps!! They just released another beautiful video…My Country Tis of Thee” filmed inSouth Dakota, USA!! More unbelievable harmonies from Home Free! Nice to see you back with the Home Fries!M. Great Reaction!!
Hi Jan! Glad you enjoyed it. I sure did. And it’s good to be back!
It does not matter how many times I hear this it's the most beautiful covers I have ever heard. Great reaction
Beautiful review, Recky, thank you so much!!!
Yes, beautiful spot for a church... Definitely, easy for God to find!!!
I love this song so very much... Singing it causes my voice to crack, often... I believe God finds any and all when they sing this beautiful hymn!!!
💜🙏💜
This one is just the most beautiful vocal harmonies ever! This was filmed in the Australian Alps when they were on tour ! Check out one of their newer releases....Bless The Broken Road!
Austrian alps are the most beautiful in the world!
My favorite by Home Free, too. So, thanks for doing it. It's quite okay to be struck speechless with their wonderful harmonies and the grandness of the scenery. Leaves me speechless every time - and I've listened to it about a hundred times! They couldn't have chosen a better location for this song.
This is the absolute best version of this beautiful song. These guys are amazing.
Sheer vocal perfection. This was my introduction to Home Free a few years ago, and I was immediately hooked.
IT'S CALLED THE "HOLY SPIRIT" MOVING IN YOU WHEN YOU FEEL ALL THE EMOTIONS OF THIS HYMN.
They were in the Austrian Alps and it was recorded right before they had to fly home because of Covid. Took me seeing this about 40 or more time not to cry. I can fight the tears off and even sing along with them, Love all my Home Free
This is absolutely a beautiful love song to God. It makes me feel so humble. ✝
Home Free filmed this in Kematen, Tirol, Austria. Their vault series has all the behind the scene action that went on while they were there and how they filmed "How Great Thou Art". The song is a very, very old Christian song inspired by a poem written by a Swedish poet. Enjoyed your reaction immensely. Thank you
Thank you. I’m kinda proud that it’s from a poem from my country. And that you enjoyed my reaction they much, makes me even prouder.
you may really enjoy "Auld Lang Syne" and "In the Blood" by these guys, they are also awesome
Perfect!
This is a great version! We sang it in church my whole life and still do. I’m 60 yo.
Love Tim's lead.
Written by Swedish man, Carl Bogerg in 1886. I remains a popular Hymn in most Christian churches. Boberg's inspiration for "How Great Thou Art" came from a visit to a beautiful country estate on the southeast coast of Sweden. He got caught in a midday thunderstorm with awe-inspiring moments of flashing violence, followed by a clear brilliant sun. Soon afterwards he heard the calm, sweet songs of the birds in nearby trees."
The experience prompted Boberg to "fall to his knees in humble adoration of his mighty God." A nine-stanza poem beginning with the Swedish words "O Store Gud, nar jag den varld beskader" captured his exaltation of how great God is
This is the Best version of this I have Ever heard☦️‼️
One of my favorites...I get chills every time
This is one of the earliest present day songs, what I mean is that is still sung in church services! It is my favorite gospel song! I think it was written in the late 1700's or early 1800's.
It’s a Swedish poem! And that makes me proud!
I love to watch reactor's faces as they hear that last note.
You will notice on Home Free videos some stunning locations and with the superb arrangements and their talent there is no better.
Thank You, Recky great reaction.
Great song! An awesome suggestion!
Yes, one of my favorites of theirs. They sound so good. This is a hymn I grew up singing in church proclaiming the greatness of God and his creation. This was filmed in the Austrian Alps while they were touring there. That little church looks like the most beautiful thing in the mountain meadow. Did you notice Adam, the beatboxer, actually sang in this. He sang the part, “It is well”. Good reaction Recky!
This is so beautiful. The harmonies are so clean, wow. The guys are fantastic. Love your reaction.
Awesome listen from you. You can physically see your heart lifting. A beautiful thing.
Great reaction, Recky. More Home Free please. Helplessly Hoping, blue ain’t your color, mayday, brother in arms, i can’t outrun you, ring of fire, Champagne taste on a beer budget, Travelin’ Soldier, brother…you really can’t go wrong with anything you pick.
ELVIS PRESLEY COVERED THIS SONG AND WON A GRAMMY FOR IT IN GOSPEL!
In America "How Great Thou Art" is a well-known Christian hymn based on original Swedish hymn titled "O Store Gud" written in 1885 by Carl Boberg. English version of hymn & title are loose translation by English missionary Stuart K. Hine in 1949.
Home Free added hymn "It Is Well" to this version.
There are many versions online in gospel, country, jazz, indie, rock, & even Elvis.
I'm loving your reactions to Home Free ( How Great Thou Art) ❤❤
Superb choice, Recky...hard to go wrong with Home Free. Or VoicePlay! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it David!
How Great Thou Art (O store Gud) is a Swedish spiritual song with lyrics from 1885 by Carl Boberg (1859-1940) which was first printed on March 13, 1886. Carl Boberg wrote the lyrics after experiencing a thunderstorm at Kalmarsund in Småland. The music is a Swedish folk melody. It is one of the most widespread spiritual songs in the world.
Never heard of it. I guess I have to google it!
@@Reckyj Artur Erikson recorded the song in 1970 and Christer Sjögren has also recorded the song.
@@jeanetteback5607 Men va fasiken! Now i gotta check!
Recky, This song How Great Thou Art was written in 1885 By Swedish Minister and Poet Carl Boberg. Beautiful Song.
Saw HF close to home. My younger daughter and I were nearly bawling when they did 'Winter Song', a cover by a couple of Swedish girls. Acoustics in this hockey arena venue were perfect. Check it out sometime.
Most beautiful version ever. 😍
One of my favorite gospel songs
Absolute pure beauty.
My understanding is it's the same location in the Austrian Alps used during the filming of The Sound of Music.
Home Free - From the Vault - Episode 8 (How Great Thou Art) goes into the location and the making of this video.
The video was made in the Austrian Alps - I think it's the most stirring version of this hymn that I've yet heard.
This is one of favorite hymns.
I love how you felt it could be a love song. In fact that's exactly what it is! Its a love song to & about our Lord Jesus Christ🥰😇
I'm not religious but absolutely beautiful.
Its an old Swedish poem. I think thats pretty cool!
I am so glad ypu enjoyed this
I’m so glad you watched it, commented it. Thank you!
If you haven't seen the video of Austin Brown and Rob Lundquist "Two Country Singers try singing opera", you might want to - it's a real surprise.
This is definitely a love song to God and Jesus.
Imagine the sound of that little church's bells, echoing through the valley, and returning from the mountain walls around it, only touched by God or angels on that round trip...
I imagine it sounds like heaven!
This takes me back to my roots, absolutely a beautiful performance by beautiful, extremely talented performers.
If you haven't reacted to Amazing Grace by PTX, you should bc it's also is done beautifully, it's another gospel piece that touches your heart & soul completely. Thanks for sharing this mv, one of my favorite songs. Stay safe, healthy with laughter/music guiding your pathway.

Carrie Underwood also sings ( How Great Thou Art) Her version gave me chills! Give it a listen to see for your self!
Love your reaction to this song.
That’s cool! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
They were in Austria, they have a behind scenes of the making of this video that is called "From The Vault 8 (How Great Thou Art)" You don't need to react to it, but you should see it, it's really good and shows their funny antics.
Swiss Alps, Austria.
Helplessly Hoping is the best Harmony they have done IMHO it is flawless but very short and usually gets copywrited by SME but is A Master class on how to do Harmony. This one is a close second and longer so flip a coin on witch is better
This was filmed in the same area of the Austrian Alps where they filmed The Sound of Music movie.
Recky, this is recognition of our Creator giving us life and Life more abundantly. It's praise back to him for all the Great Promises HE gave us in his Word, The Bible.
This song is a Christian hymn based on an original Swedish hymn entitled "O Store Gud"
"Then sings my soul, my saviour God to thee, how great Thou art..." Yes, I think you might say that it is a Christian *hymn* (not merely a song, but a sacred hymn, written for use in church services and other sacred occasions). Another hint: "When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and then proclaim my God how great Thou art!" That is a subtle clue that you are hearing sacred music. There is a world of really awesome and beautiful sacred music out there that you might enjoy listening to, whether you are into Christianity or not (I am pretty much an agnostic these days, but I still go to church just for the music - growing up singing in church choirs, those hymns were my "safe place" when everything else in my life was shot to hell.) Home Free has done several of them, so check them out. Go Rest High on That Mountain, Amazing Grace (with Peter Hollens), and a whole bunch of Christmas hymns come to mind.
Oh Holy Night is one of my absolute favorites by them.
It's a Christian song, a popular one. I forgot they combine it with It Is well with my Soul. I like your take on the church :)
Yes, it is a Christian song. I listen to a woman that has a very close relationship with God and teaches how to have intimacy with God. She said she asked God what his favorite song is. He told her How Great Thou Art.
It’s a love song to The Father and The Son.
This was filmed in the Austrian Alps! Can you imagine?
Yea. Looks amazing! And with a Swedish poem.
It is absolutely a Christian song. It is a worship song devoted to the glory of our Father in Heaven. Knowing His hand created it all. Praise Him for his incredible creation known as earth.
Swedish hymn or poem. ;)
They are in the Swiss Alps!
They’re in Austria and they had to climb up that mountain. Watch From the Vault.
This was filmed in Austria!
They were in Austria beautiful country trust me
They filmed this one in Austria.
Maybe check out JOSH TURNER LONG BLACK TRAIN.....and Brooks and Dunn....I BELIEVE
Now aren't you sorry it's been so long since you listened to Home Free? This song should get you back on track. Try Do You Hear What I Hear next.
Hahaha very true, I’ve been missing them a lot! And thank you for the suggestion
Recky, I am sorry that I can't stop texting. However, HOMEFREE just released "MARY, DID YOU KNOW?" I think you would really enjoy it! Please play it for me! HOW GREAT THOU ART IS DEFINITELY A RELIGIOUS SONG! IT IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD!
No need for any apologies! Mary did you know , I’ve heard PTX and Voctave and I will most definitely hear home free’s version to
Lauren Dagle Sings this song very beautiful also , you should compare them but they are both beautiful ❤🔥, When you're singing to the most high , how can it not be!!?❤❤
A great listen is as well Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill on the Acms
Filmed in Austria
Beautiful 😍
Listen to Vince Gill and Carrie Underwood at the ACMs. Wonderful
How great God is
I believe this is in Switzerland
❤❤
I can't believe you didn't realise this was a religous song.
Filmed in the Austrian Alps.
This song is probably the most popular Christian song in America. it is sung in every Christian church. These guys are all Christians and love God very much. They wanted to sing among God's creations (nature)
It’s a Swedish hymn/poet. And that’s kinda cool.
Man tackar!
How great thou art is a phrase commonly used through out the Book of Psalms....it's supposedly the inspiration for the poem/song.
Psalms is one of the most beautiful and poetic books of the New Testament.
Ohh Heather digging around on my playlists!
It is a classic hymn. Christianity views God as a benevolent being, who sent a piece of himself down to take the punishment that humanity deserves for the evil it has committed. Many worship songs and hymns are written with a similar tone to love songs as a result. Many sing of his unconditional love, familial love, some even dip into romantic. I wish that more Christians lived their lives expressing the love that God wishes to promote.
Evis did this song too
It’s in almost every Hymnal of every Christian Denomination
Im suffed... hahaha chinese always gets me stuffed like a pig.
You should react to carrie underwoods rendition of this hymn!
