Stephen King always talks about honesty in writing. It's very important to be honest to character and story, regardless of where that takes you. To care is to be honest. It's not that you sprinkle darkness and say 'hope that's interesting' but to say, unless it depicts the truth of life, it's not doing anything for your story.
