► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Lock down is hard isn't it. We hope all our viewers are ok and that our vlogs can provide a few minutes escape from reality.
Thank you to everyone for all the kind and supportive comments on our videos. It really does mean a lot to us and we don't take them for granted. We try and respond to every message we get though sometimes it takes us a few days to get through them all.
Sadly, like most channels we get the occasional nasty comment. People can be very rude and hurtful and for some reason think it is ok to say thinks to us in the comment section that they would never dream of saying to our faces. These comments simply get deleted. We do not engage with them, we do not leave them for others to read and once they are deleted we don't give them a second thought. This is so we can keep this wonderfully community supportive, constructive and safe for all who visit.
Thanks to you both for letting us tag along on your travels. Extra warm regards to you Jo for the effort you expend on producing your content. I am totally ignorent of the technicalities involved in creating vlogs and I enjoyed your post on how you created this one. It added to my enjoyment watching it today. I guessed you were the one that delt with the day to day details. Hope all went as well as possible with the "complications" you were dealing with in Feb and that you are now close to seeing them behind you. BTW I just visited Amazon and am now looking forwards to reading about your earlier travels Jo. Thanks for the link; I must admit to being curious about how you two met.
Stay safe, be well and keep doing what you're doing. It brings me joy. Love and light to you both. :)
Hi guys, good to see you cruising again. Sorry to hear about the rest of the stuff that life has been throwing at you. Hopefully, by now all of that is behind you and you are back on your boat again. That wind sure wanted a piece of you, the way it kept swinging you across the canal must have been frustrating for you, Michael.
Lipton and Tetley, too funny, guys LOL
You certainly cover some miles, thanks for another great video. Stay safe. See you soon :-)
Thanks for watching! We have definitely cut down on the miles this year sadly! 😔 stay safe too
Thorne is my home town. I am sure I saw your boat moored up when walking the dog. But that was before I started watching your blog.
We like Thorne quite a bit, we were there both last winter and briefly last week. Nice little town. M
I never tire of this music on your vlogs! and, I never tire of your vlogs!
ditto... because there are some vlogs out there with very annoying music.... though I will mention no names. ;)
Annoying to some is comforting to others, says this one-time headbanging hair band fan. M
Well, that and your previous vlog brought back many memories. I spent six years living in Staniland's boatyard (as it was then) building my sailing boat and, concurrently, fitting out then living on my partner's narrowboat. (Springer). That was in the 1970's. My, how the place has changed. The boatyard was surrounded by fields and a resident lock keeper called Eric worked the lock. The town was still struggling with massive unemployment after the mines closed. But one of the bakeries had just started up, run by a young couple. The town appears much more prosperous now.
We moved both boats to Keadby for almost a year, where Alystra's masts were stepped and she was made ready for sea. There was a marine engineering workshop between the 'facilities' and the road bridge, run by George Trevithick - a direct descentant of 'the' Trevithick of steam engine fame. George had model steam engines in the workshop, running on compressed air.
We sailed Alystra to the west coast of Scotland, where I am now, and the narrowboat, Lothlorien, to West Stockwith. We spent the winters aboard her, moored just under the bridge on the left. The Chesterfield canal was navigable to just past Worksop and we went to the end and earned a plaque with a miniature curly windlass (unique to the Chesterfield) on it. It's still somewhere about.
I guess you may still be on the Chesterfield. Enjoy. But wherever you are please keep your vlogs going in these straitened times. You are both breaths of fresh air - even here on the wild west coast.
Take care and keep well. And thank you. :-)
Hi jo Michael , enjoyably video the information jo gives out on the trips is so interesting ,when was this video made ,,it look at times if the wind farm was following you ,keep safe please take care,John
I live in Scunthorpe and Love that wind farm. It looks great from the A18 and from the top of the hill in Scunthorpe.
Yeah, I don’t know why some people hate them so much.
Really shows just how much the wind causes issues. Thanks for sharing your continuing adventures.
Thanks for watching!
looking good
Thanks 👍
Great video thank for sharing keep safe both 👍
Thorne is a very pleasant little town with plenty of shops and amenities as you said, and the added bonus of the marinas and boat services. We found that we got lots of waves from the train drivers and passengers as we pootled along.
I enjoyed comparing this episode to your previous instructional video on creating it. Thank you. Stay safe!
One more ‘how to’ to come! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hope your family emergency was resolved on the positive side. Love your channel ❤ Thanks for making time to put something up for all us goongoozlers. Take care and stay safe during the lock down.
Great to see that you made it to Crowle - my local town. The chaps in the signal box are friendly as are most of the locals! Given the date this was filmed on I'm guessing you have moved on but it was great to see the familiar sights from the canal view. Can't wait to see where you end up before lockdown!
Oh, happy times seem so long ago now, thanks for the vlog.
Wow, Michael nails the outro first time! It’s nice to see some pre-lockdown cruising. I have mixed feelings about watching recent vlogs from continuous cruisers doing “essential” journeys while I’m stuck in my flat and unable to visit my boat.
Thanks guys for the vblog. Appreciated.
Hi, we’ve watched your journey from Diggle, once in Yorkshire but stolen and put in Lancashire by Ted heath‘s reorganisation, to episode 270 when you left God’s Own Country.
I have a strong connection with the Colne Valley, I was born and grew up in Milnsbridge, (t’Brig), , my dad was born in Slaithwaite, (Slawit), I worked in Linthwaite, (Linfit), I now live in Kirkheaton (Yeton) where the Broad Canal is down the hill on its way to Mirfield.
I was interested in your passing through Thorne, a few years ago we watched a TV programme called Scotland’s Vital Spark about Clyde Puffers, on a holiday in Oban we drove to Crinan, we saw what looked like a Puffer, it was the VIC32 (Victualling Inshore Craft), then the only one still sailing.
A bit of searching on t’interweb showed that the VIC32 was built by Dunston’s of Thorne in November 1943.
Love your videos, informative and not too wordy, slow where it’s needed and fast forward where it could be a bit boring.
Really enjoyed the vlog, thank you both. Hope you are both well and safe.
Great to see you both again!
Thank you!
I LOVE SNOW DROPS!!!
That was lovely. Lifts the spirits . Thanks xxx
That’s lovely to hear. Thank you.
Hope you and your Families stay safe. Great vlog.💛
Looked beautiful and stay safe
Thank you. You too.
two wind turbines are on a first date, trying to make conversation the first asks the second what kind of music do they like. The second answers.........Well ,I'm pretty much a Big Metal Fan..... Stay healthy,
I really enjoyed that cruise, nice to get out and about! Very fortunate that you got behind with the vlogs, at least we get some cruising time. Stay safe.
"Getting a strange sense of deja vu… all over again". Brilliant follow up to the how to vlog. Keep well, be kind.
Great video. Thanks for the 🇨🇦 mention, because the first thing I though of when you mentioned Tetly was, indeed, the tea! 😉😂
Thank you!
We got stuck in Thorne a few years ago due to high wind. Glad you didn't have as much grief with the first bridge as we we did, took us over an hour with CRT assistance.
Oh goodness, that sounds annoying!
It can be a pain that bridge!
Last year they told me its because its batteries wont charge and the pedestrian switches are tempemental.
Michael was right on that outro :). Great vlog guys, as always :). Ian
Thank you! 😊👍🏻
It's great seeing this after seeing your videos on how you actually made it :) Stay safe.
Thank you!
Take the "stack" down
The commander of the vessel said !
Good you're both ok
albeit " hospital appointments"
your supposed to be leading a healthy outdoor lifestyle.
Cut the vanilla slices out !🙂
Keep safe and dry and virus free.
A bit windy but looks like you had a nice cruse. I liked your train shots and the windmills were a nice bonus. Stay safe you "3". ............PS: I still have snow as of April 17th.
Yah you went past bluewater, our first canal in our boat. We actually at one point went down the canal sideways as we had some rope round the prop and the engine stopped. That was fun!
We did that route last year in June and the wind was still chilly then. It’s so flat. I trust you have found somewhere to sit the current lockdown out.keep safe.
Want to say the music in the backround is amazing, love following the both of you along your adventures hope your both staying safe with the virus still going on, already told my wife if i ever hit the lottery big am retiring to England but a 56foot narrow boat and just going to travel from one point to another lol but do have a question have seen in a lot of videos in the marina a lot of narrow boats the question is are there people like in the states who own a boat have it moored and go on it but never take it out of the marina
So glad you enjoy the vlogs. We do feel very lucky to be living this life. I hope you get afloat one day but I wouldn’t count on the lottery win.
There are many people who live abroad who keep their boats in marinas who come over and take their boats out in the summer months.
Glad you enjoyed Thorne, looking forward to seeing your trip up the Trent :)
Did you spot your boat?
@@MinimalList I did!
Enjoyed the vlog. Watch all but on TV no chance to comment unless on small laptop. Stay safe thanks for upbeat viewing during present lock in.
Seems a long time since we were in Thorne for what seemed like an eternity, due to one circumstance or another. Definitely has all the facilities you could wish for as a boater . Flooding subsides and the l&l opens up now stuck in skipton for heaven knows how long. Only lived aboard for 9 mnths it's been an adventure for sure but not one I am keen to repeat. Hope you are virus free and enjoying the solitude.
You should do videos about after the lockdown, that would make the rest of us feel much better. And yes, BBC Wales missed an opportunity when they didn't choose a narrowboat for the TARDIS.
Hope you guys and your family are all safe and healthy.
I’m ready for everything to be normal again. Sadly I think it’s going to a LONG time. I know you guys just got extended another three weeks. In Washington state where I live we got extended through May 4. But even that is probably going to get extend it again. School is out until September for kids.
Nice to see some cruising, I've been trying to catch up with you but I'm only up to vlog 30. I've got 3 weeks furlough as of Sunday so should get somewhere close 😂 I've only had one weekend break on the canals and managed to get pinned against the bank 😂 I think I prefer the rain. Take care guys
Hope the family situation has calmed down--especially now with this lock down.
Thank you!
Storm Ciara seems like a lifetime ago! Hope that your family situation was resolved in a good way and that you're both keeping in good health.
Thank you. We are doing ok. I hope you are too.
Hope all is well with you both. Two storms done. And now the stay in place order. We are well. Hubby went to store twice since March 17. I have not. It is still snowing here in Ohio. 3 inches Apr 15, 2 inches Apr 16 and today 3 inches. (Apr 17) Good thing it goes away each day to start again the next. Winter just will not let go.
Did you have problems during the flooding. I have not seen any vlogs on how tht impacted the canal boat community. I like the time lapse footage. Gives a sense of movement. Stay safe.
Windy problems can be overcome by fixing a stern rope to bank and putting engine in reverse
Bow pulls out.
SINCE UK LOCKDOWN MIGHT GO ANOTHER 3-MONTHS!
FOR YOUR OWN ONBOARD USE - LOOKS EASY!

Thanks!
Great Vlog again did you find the fish shop in Crowle lol
Was the waterpoint left open when you came, it looked as you were going to forget a key there?
Can’t remember, but I know we didn’t lose any of our keys. They’re often left open, and quite often the locks are actually inoperable. M
Hey guys, I've just literally found you guys this week, and omg you were just down the road from me here in doncaster!!
I so would love to live a life on the canal, what advice could you give?
Stay safe
Go for it! Just keeping mind that it is not as easy and idyllic as it looks.
Does Jo have a ped-o-meter? I'd be really curious how many miles a year she has walked on the tow paths. Its interesting how she can take a long detour through a town or over a mountain and still beat the boat to the next lock or bridge.
So a bow thruster on the next boat?
Been there a month.
that sounds like David over on Mooring The Marina ( j/k)
(doesnt it seem odd for a narrowboat youtube channel not to have a dog or cats? Having a Van is not 'close enough')
I have an odd thought...
I never see disabled facilities on the canals.
Sorry, my cripple humour :)
Hmm... most of the bathrooms and showers have some (minor) accommodation for mobility issues, handrails and shower seats, etc, but they’re not exactly accessible from towpath moorings, that’s for sure. If you can moor directly on the service points though they do try to make them at least nominally wheelchair accessible. M
Hi. I really love your videos. I hope you don't mind if I report a tiny technical niggle. It's not a criticism, but is meant in a positive way.
It's something I only notice when I use headphones, and it's this. When you are doing your intro and outro to camera, the left and right sound channels appear reversed, so I have to swap my headphones over, otherwise it seems like you are doing ventriloquism. It's not a big problem, and maybe it's only me that notices it (or maybe it's my problem) but I hope you don't mind me mentioning it.
Keep up the good work in these difficult times and stay safe.
I'm not a fan of Wind turbines not very good for bats according to some reports. I believe in non fossil fuel energy but wave and tidal power need to be looked at, also weirs on some of our larger river could have hydro electric plants. I will get off my "soap box". Thanks for postng and please look after yourselves at this time.
