    Hi there from Australia.
It's been great to see you bringing the old 55 back to life. I have a 1980 55hp myself that I've got on a 15ft fiber glass boat, it's had its moments but I like solving it's problem. Here's one for you, and it might be something that you may think of changing.
Long story short the motor just stopped on me one day whilst out fishing, there was a bit of a crunch before it stopped, lifted the cover off, didn't take long to find the problem. One or both of the plastic linkage clicks for advancing the timing broke, I guess over time plastic deteriorates, it sent the timing plate almost 180 degree's and ripped out the wireing. I'm happy to say that it's all fix and running fine but might be something worth looking at. I bought new plastic clips of eBay from marine engines $10 each US. Look forward to your next video
    Regards Michael Aussie Aussie Aussie.

Awesome finally baby 😎 lol hardwork pays off. I'm in Oklahoma it's 4* outside 🥶 and 6ft snowdrifts. Idk if you've ever used one before maybe put a hydrofoil aka whale tale on it might help it plane out better n stabilize it. Try a run with top down might make a difference less drag. Thanks for always replying to comments 👍 you keep on keeping on brother. TOO real life saga 🇺🇸 have any plans to paint the motor original colors n decals or something custom?

Just changing to a stainless prop will give you more MPH as long as you can still hit the same top end RPM's. Stainless is about 15% more efficient. On my I/O Starcraft I went from a 19 pitch aluminum to a 17 pitch stainless I maintained my 31mph top end, gained 300 more rpms' and got a better hole shot. Also I put on a hydrofoil and cut the bow rise in half and now it gets on plane twice as fast. Great job on the 55. Your face says it all. Keep wrenching and keep the videos coming. My water here is about 1' thick in ice. Our temps in Iowa should be above 32 degrees for breif periods in a week or so.

Ya got the good runs! Key about pitch, I've read, is to select it so at full throttle the motor rpm is in its peak power RPM range. Thus too high a pitch could load it down to below optimal-power RPM. Also read that moving more than 1 step in pitch either way can put it out of "the zone." Thus you choose either a bit faster out of the hole & lower top end, or the reverse. On my 30 HP, std. prop is 11.5, went to a 12; and it did add 1 MPH or so top end, but seemed a turtle on the hole shot. Went back to std.

Sweet! It finally happened. I guarantee that 55 can turn a 17 pitch like is on my 40 with very similar boat better than mine can. I bet you can get 33 out of it. I don't know about more than that. Get that motor trimmed up a bit and may go even faster. BTW a gallon of water is 8 lbs and gasoline is very similar in weight. I have a 12 gallon tank in my boat and 2 deep cycle batteries, a trolling motor that weighs probably 30 lbs and I am right at 400 myself, so when I hit 26 with my 40 I feel I am pretty good. My tilt is messed up on mine so I have to shim it and I don't know how close I am to ideal. Is the cavitation plate even with the bottom of your boat, above, or below? Always been told it need to be even with the bottom, but I don't know. I do have one of those Dol Fin hydrofoils on mine. I like being on plane at probably 15 mph or less and just let the torque do the job and just cruise at about 22mph. I feel like it would get killer fuel mileage around that speed.

Hi. I've been watching some of you're videos of restoring these old outboards. I been doing the same on a 1985 Be60elcod model 60hp 2cyl Evinrude.
Right now I'm fighting a strange problem. My starter works( both of them) , solenoid works ,new cables from the battery , 2 batteries 1 new (taken from my daily car) + 1 old
No matter what my voltage isn't strong enough to turn the motor. I've been trying all the old trix by cleaning all connections , soldering cable connections to be sure. I've literally tried everything but I just dont get the the voltage it needs.
    Batteries say 13v and 12 v
If I crank the motor with out spark plugs it shows 10-11v when it cranks - but if I have spark plugs in it drops to 5-7 v when it tries to crank the motor and it really struggling to get over the compression top point.
But the engine actually has a huge compression and seems healthy and strong som its though to crank by hand but it runs smoothly and when I cheated and gave a little bit of startgas I fired on the first compression one the first piston and ran for 30 seconds , so it is the 2 starter motors there is not getting power.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on , we tried everything a normal mechanical problem solving process with absolutely no effect.
I seriously do not understand this because normally this junk engines will newer run but you can always limp home on the starter motor because they are so strong.
So I'm open to any crazy idea if it might work...... !!!!!!!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 3 lety +1

Hey. Thanks for watching. I've had that happen a few times and its always been a weak starter motor. Just not strong enough to turn it with the plugs in. You can try and take it apart and clean it. The brushes get dusty as they wear down which makes for a poor connection. Sometimes it helps sometimes it dont. Double check all your connection too, make sure its grounded really good. You can get a new cheap starter on ebay or try and get yours rebuilt. Good luck and thanks again !

Your speed tests are not the same.
Some with the Bimini top up, some with it down. It makes a difference.

Quit thinking about the diameter of the prop being less metal spinning, start thinking in terms of RPM. For maximum speed Install a tachometer then run as much pitch as you can and stay in the wide open throttle range. You will find too much pitch will cost you too many Rpm’s and thus speed. There is also a loss in takeoff performance with too much pitch. Enjoy your videos.
