- Do you want a cab tractor or an open station tractor? As if figuring out the right model of tractor isn't hard enough, you also have to decide how you want it outfitted. Some accessories, attachments, and add-ons can easily be purchased and integrated afterwards. However, a factory cab is a decision that needs to be made at the time of the tractor purchase. The reason being is that factory cabs are designed and assembled along with the tractor.
Don't confuse a true factory cab with an aftermarket version. There is a night and day difference. While you can add air conditioning to a certain model of Curtis cab on the Kubota's, it still isn't the same as a real factory cab. Form, fit, and function are far superior on factory installed cabs versus aftermarket installations. With most things in life, there's many trade-offs associated with an open station tractor vs a cab tractor.

I've been struggling with the decision to get a cab or open tractor. This was extremely helpful in making my decision to get a cab tractor. I'm in my 60's and live in the country here in Canada. The comfort of heat in winter and AC in summer definitely seems like it will be worth the extra money. Thanks for a very well done comparison and summary.
We’re both same era and country but I’m needing a tractor for working around and in the woodlot and as nice as the heat and AC would be, the cab is just in the way and something to get damaged working in the bush and why I’m going open station

I made a decision to get a bigger tractor after moving to my current property. I didn't know I could even get a (factory) cab on a Kubota in the size tractor I wanted/needed. Yes, there was a shock in the price difference when I found out I could actually get a cab and truly use my tractor regardless of the weather. I wanted my machine to be usable the entire year. Ultimately considering the facts that a cab helped buffer me from the heat/sunburn/allergens/windchill while outside finally justified (in my mind) the extra option and expense of a cabbed model. No regrets.

Been running a open/ROPS for 20 years now, but 43 yrs old and thinking its time to upgrade and treat myself to a cab. Not too macho to say I value comfort at times. Thanks for making this video.

I turned 60 this month, my JD5055E with cab arrives this week.....the Catskills are cold 🥶, I'm done freezing my butt off. Almost 90 inches of snow this winter....I'll be plowingin n my T- Shirt next winter like a gentleman.
This is truly educational and an eye opener for me. What I would not really consider as a factor before, it made me think again. Once again, what really matter are what you are comfortable with and what makes your work a little easier.
I was extremely grateful I had a cab on my tractor last weekend. Last Saturday I was doing some grading and pulling up some tree roots. In the blink of an eye all I could see was steam and I heard a loud pop. It turned out one of he loader hoses blew and the hole was right in the direction of the operator station. If I hadn’t had the cab on I would have taken a hot mess of fluid in the face.
I purchased a cab tractor last year getting to the age were I do not like the heat or cold best purchase I have ever made. Thanks for your videos .

If You have the budget, I would go for cab version always. I have now a kubota with a/c cab. I can use it simply anytime I want. What is also important - I can work in the evening without those disturbing mosquitos. I think this is really important point, those insect were really making me nervous and now with the cab, they cause no trouble anymore.
Cabs are nice, wouldn't buy another one without it.

am new to tractor world and this would be my first tractor but undecided with cab or without it. I dont believe in upgrading within time. you loose more money than just buying the best tractor at first
When I got my Kubota BX2380 I ordered it with a cab but changed my mind at the last minute. By the time winter hit and I put a closet full of warm clothes on to blow snow for the first time in an open station I realized the mistake I had made. I called the dealer and ordered the cab but it would be 4 weeks freezing in wind blown snow at 6 am in that open station. When the tractor arrived with the Tektite cab installed I immediately knew it was a good decision. It had heat, front and rear flood lights and a front wiper. The first storm I had the pleasure of using the cab I fired up both front and rear flood lights turned on the heater and when the snow blew back onto the windshield I smiled and flipped the toggle for the front wiper blade. Yup it was heaven. Now I can dress a lot lighter and still be comfortable. I will say though that the noise level went up and I started using ear plugs or ear muffs. Love that cab wouldn’t have it any other way! Enjoyed the episode wish I had seen it before I bought the open station!

I’m thinking of snow blowing in my pjs so my friends will understand why I bought a cab.
I'm in the minority here, I actually prefer open station, but with a roofcap. That way I'm out of the sun and rain but still get a sense of being outdoors, rather than shut up in a cab on a nice day. 95% of my tractor work is done in nice Spring/Summer/Fall weather.
We are near the ocean and the weather is quite moderate, 85f is a hot day in summer. 30f would be a cold day in winter, but I don't do much tractor work in winter, just a bit of snow removal maybe every other year.
. If I lived in a very hot in summer/ cold in winter climate, then I think the heated and cooled cab would be high on the list.
Sometimes I think a cab would be nice for snowplowing, but there again some winters are without snow. In any case the whole snow removal operation for about 500' of driveway here is done in 20 minutes or so, even if there's a freak 2 foot snowfall. 7 foot bucket, 93 pto horsepower 4wd tractor, drive in pushing on one side of driveway, turn around, drive out pushing on the other side. Now you have it cleared 14' wide.
I can suit up for that!

I should mention that I have done some damage to the roof cap with tree branches when working in the forested area, so I guess a Cab would really catch it when in there.

Really tough decision honestly. If using in rain, snow conditions a cab would be VERY beneficial. Long days in the field I'd say cab also. On and off the machine constantly and not spending long hours in the field or working in rainy/snowy conditions I'd say open station. Also if for business purposes where multiple employees are using or trailering it I'd say open station. That glass can get expensive if broken and multiple users WILL break things.
The extra cost for the cab will also be worth whatever the extra you have to pay for it plus the tractor with a cab will get you over what you paid for the cab over. Cab tractors sell faster too. I have a snow thrower for my 3039 R and I would hate removing snow without the cab. I have a 72 center mount mower, I love the AC on a very hot humid day in July and August. The bad part about the cab is it is harder to keep a sun tan. LOL guess what? You get more time on the golf course to keep your tan and less time waiting for it to cool down to cut grass. My kids love cutting grass with a AM-FM radio with a CD player to jam on too. No comparison for me, get the tractor with the quiet cab.

Open station for me... I like being out in the air. Besides, I can reach all the controls then and not have to get in/out of the cab every two seconds... Even during a snowstorm/blizzard when removing snow so my wife can get to/from work, I'd not not a cab even then... Those cabs get expensive in a hurry.. JMHO... :)
When I bought my 2R Tractor, the standard cab they offered was blocky and small, so I went with the Tektite cab. I love it, especially in the winter when I turn on the heat and work without shivering. The only drawback, it is an expensive learning curve when moving rocks as one rolled out of the loader and shattered a door. Bit breezy for a while :)
Those Tektite's are very nice aftermarket cabs
@@GoodWorksTractors They are! When I had the local Deere dealership install it, it was the first one in the area. They had people in from another cab manufacturer, Curtis, I believe, going over it before I even saw it. It's not as sleek as the newer Deere Factory cabs for the 2R, but then again, the new 2R tractors are a step down, in my opinion.

It's a lot upfront for sure,but you usually get most of it back on the backend when you sell it on. Also great when you live somewhere that's rain 75% of the time.
I've always had cab tractors and they're way more popular where I live, but I consider switching to an open station just because I climb on and off a lot and also do a lot of work together with my family.
Cab in the forest is both a pro and con. Yes, you might scratch that cab a bit, but it also prevents you from getting a branch in your face. What type forests will matter a lot and if you're there a lot then you really need to consider further protecting that tractor which will be much easier on a cab since you can mount brush guards from the hood and up to the front corners of the cab. And in rugged terrain both tractors should have a belly plate.

Ima cab kinda guy. In one word, winter! I've been out blowing snow when it's snowing and blowing, trying to get things cleared so we can off to work. It's not fun . . . the heated cab is a delight to be in . . . AND . . . when you're going through brush and stuff you are not going to break your lights with branches, they are tucked behind the cab! :)
No doubt, nothing beats a cab in the winter time!

Don't forget to mention whether or not you can use a backhoe with a cab. Not being able to equip a backhoe may be a primary deciding factor for a lot of people.
When the primary use of the tractor is snow removal in the middle of the night with temperatures from zero to -30 degrees I really love my cab!
I live in Florida,if I buy a closed cab machine it has to have air conditioning, that's more expense, more maintenance, more things to break down and it makes it harder to communicate with laboers I have working around me. And when I let my employees do the job without me, they spend time sitting in the tractor burning diesel rather than out working!
Had a 3720 Cab and a 4300 open station.. they are both fantastic but when I stop doing my business and sold one, I choose to get rid of the cab tractor. Yes they are great to have and I spent lot of hours on each machine but the open station overall was my choice. I always felt better in control with my attachments with the open station. Also the AC in the cab never worked great but I did love the heated cab.

Not just the added initial expense, when doing repairs, the price just about triples. We have an older 5310 with an OOS and takes about 2 days for a clutch. In one of our 5325's with a cab, we had to send it out. It was down for about a month. . .
Then there's the cost of replacing the glass WHEN it gets broken. $700 rear window, 600 or so for the door(4720). Plus the (my) labor time to install and adjust.

Takes 4 hours to pull a cab on even large ag tractors. Did it every month so your dealer must be terrible.
I'm enjoying your vids. Very informative. But after being a landscape contractor for 30 years and maintaining my own 17 acres, I feel like you overlooked two things. Cab tractor helps keep the dust off of you and more importantly, it's a great safe space when you mow over or dig up that yellowjacket nest. My JD 955 never could outrun those flying demons.

I am making this decision as we speak for the 4 series 4044. I live in Northern New England, lots of cold, even though the cab is tempting, I like "OPEN" I don't need blind spots with grandkids, pets, farm animals. I don't like confinement, so I'll take the cold.
Jut wait until you drive over a multiple underground yellow jackets nest in an open station tractor, fun times. It made the decision for me pretty quickly.
Cab or no cab? I ask myself 3 questions.
1: how many days per year does it rain where i live?
2: how many days per year would a heater be nice where i live?
3: how many days per year will i be sunburnt where i live?

I spray fencerows and the lawn, pick up logs and sticks means on and off constantly. I prefer open for this size. Can damn near hop over the steering wheel and get off left or right quickly.
Cabs are cute as hell, but we got bigger tractors with cabs for jobs that have to be done regardless of weather or time.
I guess we tell JD we don’t want cabs. After all without the cab you aren’t able to enjoy the feeling of rain or windy cold or dusty conditions.
I ordered mine without a cab and after 2 winter’s I ordered a cab for it this year. Being in Maine we get really cold snow filled winter’s and the body doesn’t like it anymore.

Guess my best solution is to get both an open station & a cabbed tractor LoL. Grew up with open station, miracle I'm not a walking skin cancer. I still really enjoy an open station, but with a canopy. The sun is rather close to us here in Oklahoma.... I purchased an "original cab co." Soft cab several years ago, threw a Buddy portable heater for winter use, love this arrangement most of the time. It takes about 30 minutes to strip the cab off, leaving the canopy on for summer. I'm trying to avoid using a factory cabbed tractor, because I know if I use one, I will have to have it!!

With a cab you can work in summer and stay cool, and winter time nice and warm. Plus not wet while raining. No bugs flying in your face with a cab. Same some $ and look at the Rk 37 ( Royal King ).

I wish the Cab versions would have left the handle on the left side fender. I think it would be easier to get in and out as well as less beating on the lid of the console that gets cracked. On my 4410 having the cab makes it miserable to work on areas that would be otherwise just unpleasant to get to like hydraulic lines and scv

Great video - thank you for the info and links on the mirrors. Do you have a link or recommendation for aftermarket mirrors to replace the ones you robbed off the 3039R to put on the 4066R that mount on the top/sides of the cab?
The dealership I got my 3046r from wanted 10k for their factory cab. Unfortunately that made it over my budget so I went with the open station. After operating it for 5 years I do think back and it would have been nice to get the cab.]
In winter conditions, the wiper blade does not make contact with the glass and for a right-handed person who looks to the rear: you can't see anything. Either John Deere finds a wiper blade or puts heat in a 4066R. If a wiper blade is already existing: please provide the model number. Thanks
If wooded property, no animals that require feeding 365, some pasture but not 100 acre plus, in the south where not often bitter cold - open can with a canopy is great! More convenient than cab - get a little dirty at times but feels great in the open air. Buy bigger 4WD tractor than you think you will ever need!

This is like buying a hard top or convertible. One is great for 70 degrees and sunny and the other is great the rest of the time.

The cab version seat does NOT go as far back as the open or station. I want a cab unit so bad, but have gone with the open air, simply because of the longer legroom !!!

Maybe other manufacturers are different but I have a Kubota l3940 with a cab and the only thing I would change is I wish you could take the doors off easily. I mean heck they make brand new jeeps with doors that come off why couldn't a tractor ?

Yes they do. There are also full soft cabs with heater options, such as those from Original Tractor Cabs.
You can get many different aftermarket cabs
So what do you think about a cab tractor for food plots where I'd have to tow it a fair distance several times a year? I'm sold on needing a cab for winter plowing, but i can see routinely towing a cab is going to lead to some broken windows.
I just bought a new tractor this summer, I use it for food plots, grading the road and snow removal at home in the winter. I'm 63 and since I'm no longer a savage I got the cab, wish I did it 20 years ago.
Do you know if the one with the cab is safe to use during lightning storms?

I bought a soft cab and I keep fogging up the windows in it. So annoying. You have to take a door off in the summer because it gets hot.
First 2 Jd’s had no cab! The 3rd one has a cab and I have never looked back! I throw my tractor in the garage when it’s snowing, hop in and plow in my underwear🤪

Living in the northeast you need a cab
Thanks for all your videos and info you have. I'm also trying to decide if I should get a cab tractor or not. I would like to have a back hoe attachment but with a cab tractor it takes a different style hoe attachment right?
How tall is it? If over 8’ it cannot fit into my shed. Door only opens to 96 inches, which is 8 foot.
It'll easily fit under a 96" door...by 4-5" at least. I did a video on it awhile back

I'm too cheap to buy a cab. I guess if I were to be using my tractors to make a living it would be a different story, but I am not going to pay a fortune for "deluxe" features and comfort.
Don't know how hot it gets in your neck of the woods but if you ever bush hog in a cab when it's 95 degrees you'll REALLY appreciate that cab!!!!

I am in the market for a 1025r snowblower and am tired of snow blowing snow into my face. That said, one concern I have is the ease or difficulty of connecting or disconnecting the FEL. Am I needlessly concerned?
Yeah, those loaders come on and off pretty easily. Nothing to be worried about.
Wear a logging helmet with face shield. Cheaper and protects you well.

What about beautiful weather? Sun protection, allergies, bees, air conditioning, increased productivity. Many reasons.

Hi not trying to sound smart mouth but it takes a lot of engineering for them to design a cab to fit on a tractor along with all the electricals in the other things that goes with it.
Have one of each a guy can’t have too many tractors!
Seeing as you have the 3039R and 3046R would you be able to do a width from the rear tires turf and r4 and height video on that series of tractor
were planing on getting rid of our 2 deeres and 3 newhollands tractors and getting 6 or 7 all new kubota loader tractors the big M and L series

Yes, but not a factory cab, just aftermarket.
I would buy a 2038r in a heartbeat if it had a factory cab. Until then I’m keeping me 3720 cab.

Good Works Tractors I wasn’t aware of that. I hated the 2 range on my old 4100. It was either to slow and had no momentum for snow plowing or in high range not enough power to pull a load. Always wanted a speed in between especially for mowing my hilly yard.
A 3 series with a cab might fit in an 8ft door but I don't think a 4 series will.

The cab version will not fit in my barn. Open top is how it’s got to be.
My cab is a great investment.
