  • Arkadi Monastery is located on fertile plateau 20 km southeastern from Rethymno and 80 km southwestern from Heraklion.
The exact date of monastery foundation is unknown. There are few versions - one says that the monastery was established by Byzantines in the 12th century and the another considers that the monastery was founded by a monk called Arkadios.
The monastery is a fortified system of buildings. The monumental church dedicated to Transfiguration of the Savior and to the Saints Constantine and Helen is in the centre.
Arkadi Monastery became famous for being the site of tragedy during the Turkish occupation of Crete in the 19th century. On the 8th November 1866 there was concentrated about 1000 of Cretans woman, children, elderlies, monks and soldiers. The Turkish army sieged the monastery and entered inside during the battle. Then Cretans set fire at the gunpowder depot, which made a huge explosion, that killed them but also many of Turkish enemies.
For that reason Arkadi is symbol of braveness and of resistance in Crete
UNESCO has designated Arkadi as a European monument of freedom
