  • Every artist should be able to use their knowledge and skill to create things without the need for a strict reference. You should feel comfortable moving away from a reference photo if it will improve the final painting.
    This is a skill that I really struggle with. Instead of copying from a single reference photo and trying to create a painting that looks the same as the reference I thought I would try something new.
    I used a variety of images to gain knowledge of my subject then used all that information to create my own original wolf design straight onto the canvas.

    It helps to KNOW the ANATOMY of a wolf verses a DOG, Study, learn anatomy of the wild life you plant to paint and not just think using from a photo, helps. I see too many people who have not observed enough, make this mistake. Knowing, the anatomy , helps to know which direction the fur falls over bone and the muscles, Sometimes Museums will let people see their books of reference when they create displays . Or if you know a Taxidermist.

    I especially appreciate the suggestion of layering the background. I tend not to give my painting enough layers and I can see now how very beneficial adding layers can be.

    I am amazed by this painting. I learned something new, a few things new. The glazing part was new to me and the background doing so many layers was something new also. What I don’t get is how you get the background from mucking up the wolf

    does the amount of layers for smoothness depend on the material painted on? I don't use canvas, I use wood or paper.

    Again awesome! When doing glazing with acrylics, do you just thin with water Only or with adding using glazing medium? If not using glazing medium, why not? I thought it supposed to be better than water only.

    How much water/fluid medium do you use so each layer doesn't completely overwhelm the rest?

  • @debbiekelly4316
    @debbiekelly4316 Před 11 měsíci

    Is the reason you use acrylics instead of oil is for the quick drying time?

    • @StudioWildlife
      @StudioWildlife  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Pretty much, when I use techniques like this that involve lots of layers acrylics are my go to. If I’m doing a painting in only 1 or two layers I’ll do a base in acrylics then oils over the top

    Hi, it’s me again can I ask what your timescale was to make this one? also I’m interested to know what is your method for creating your reference will it be finding pre-existing photography or using AI and digital methods for creating your references because of the new technology? I understand that this video is about not using one specific reference, but that question sort of refers to your other paintings. I really love realism paining, very relaxing and I’ve been enjoying your videos are very much.

    • @StudioWildlife
      @StudioWildlife  Před rokem +1

      I think it was between 4-6 hours, there’s a real time tutorial for this one on my patreon. I think Ai is here we may as well use it. I like to think of it as a way to brainstorm compositions or help with things like lighting rather than generating an exact reference. Then use your knowledge and abilities to improve on and create something brand new 😁 most of the time for my more photo realistic work I am working from a direct reference. But with things like this it’s just years of practice and studying different photos to understand the anatomy of the subject I am trying to paint
