    So with this sir, can we say that the speed (rpm) of a machine is determined by the numbers of poles?

      Yes indeed. In AC as well as DC motors you can determine the speed from number of poles, and there are other factors also on which speed depends. Like in Induction motor(AC) speed aslo depends on frequency. In fact changing number of poles is a speed control method. But it is rarely used.
