  • After a two day British "heatwave" (so above 20 Celsius / 68 F.) and just before promised rain, a look at some roses that caught my eye.

So many lovely roses Nik. If, and I'm not sure without taking something else out, I wanted another rose I really don't know which one I'd choose. Spoilt for choice. All very tempting. Kid in a sweet shop comes to mind. Cheers! P.

If you like Eustacia Vye, that's what I would recommend because of her near continuous flowering - if you ever find room for it.

@@nikkonch Yes Nik, I do like the E.V. so I'll have to take a good look around the garden with that in mind. Cheers! P.

I'm so pleased with Eustacia Vye in my own garden Nik as she's bloomed her socks off this year and she's only young. Slow to get going (I thought she'd died!) but she's been one of my best performers this year. Yours is looking so good too. I do like Ethel and Gladys. I'm going to David Austin's in Shropshire when we're on holiday soon. Ancient Mariner is on my list along with Emily Bronte and Claire Austin. Looking at your Elizabeth, I think she's going to be added as she's gorgeous. The rate I'm going, there won't be any room for the other passengers! Your garden is looking great Nik.

Hi Wendy. Eustacia Vye is a brilliant rose, isn't it, good colour and shape in the flowers, prolific, with a good strong fairly upright growth. I have 3 in my bottom bed and they are rarely without any blooms and often covered in them. Nice fragrance too. I had 4-5 cuttings from autumn 2022 which grew into generously flowering small bushes in their very first summer last year - the one which I've kept is in the pot by the fence at the moment - I don't know whether to put it with the other 3 to make a really big block of them or fit it in somewhere else to add a splash of colour. Can I put a word in for Gabriel Oak too, if you haven't got it already? A bit untidier and needing support, especially in its first years, but another prolific rose which flowers almost non-stop, and a striking colour that stands out - thorny though. And you never know what else might catch your eye on the day at DA's. Perhaps you could hire a trailer to take with you? - better safe than sorry!

@@nikkonch Hi Nik, I'm lucky enough to already have Gabriel Oak and it is definitely a lovely rose. The colour is super isn't it?. I'm also having great results this year with my Sceptre'd Isle which is in a pot. On the second flush and loads of blooms. I like the fragrance but someone the other day was wanting to do a swap as they didn't like it. I suppose smell is a very personal thing and it's a good job that we're all different. Hiring a trailer sounds like a good idea Nik as my list of" wants" is getting bigger and bigger.

Hi Nik, Eustacia Vye is at the top of my list she is beautiful, what a stunner ! She was supposed to be the next one but Emma Bridgewater beat her to it and The Ancient Mariner is trying to be at the top too haha lots of competition up there constant dilemma ! Your Elizabeth looks how I expected mine to look, hopefully I just had that one rogue yellow bloom and she will behave from now on, really odd but I do know the weather can play havoc with the roses, especially re. colour. So many gorgeous roses in your garden, Rosemary Harkness is very pretty. You have so many other plants too, lots to see and I do love that amazing view at the end, spectacular. Thanks for the tour have a lovely weekend, take care.

Thanks Linda. Much as I love The Ancient Mariner, if I had to choose between them, because The Ancient Mariner dozes off for a while, as we older men are inclined to, and absent-mindedly forgets to flower, I would go for Eustacia because she seems to be almost continuously in flower, and I prefer the colour mix, plus I can actually detect her scent more easily. I just managed to water the front garden this morning ... before the rain started. But I don't care, I'm just relieved not to be sweltering again today. My first Meteor rose (I still don't know what colour it is, since it changes all the time, but I don't think I like it!) had a very large green "belly-buttton" when it flowered, but that's been less noticeable since then, but yesterday I was poking around in the latest rose and thought I saw it again - it turned out to be a large, juicy, fat green caterpillar curled up in the middle of the rose. I think we were both quite shocked. I haven't been very taken with Elizabeth this year until now, but she's looking good at present. I think she needs space around her. The problem with rainy days like this is that I have the time to look at all the rose growers online - how can I give Elizabeth the space she needs if I buy more roses?!

@@nikkonch Thanks for the info re. The Ancient Mariner vs Eustacia Vye that's good to know. I envy you the rain (can't believe I'm saying that after the year we've had) but we haven't had more than a drop for ages and my many water barrels about the place are almost empty. Oh the temptation of roses haha but I'm sure you'll find room somehow ! Elizabeth does look very good, but then all your roses do, they are very happy in their home. You have a lovely garden and a wonderful outlook no wonder the roses are happy 🌹

Great stuff nik. The Eustacia Vye looks very happy there and it looks a great spot to stick her in the ground? All looking fantastic nik. That fragrant delight at the start looked awesome :)

Thanks Jay Jay. I am hoping to put a couple of the short climber bare roots where EV is now, although I am tempted - she would look good there. Could I cram 2 climbers and EV in that space? The Fragrant Delight looks a lot better this year than last - further evidence that you really need to give a rose 2-3 years to show its true colours.
