    The evolution of the uniforms of Belgium say a lot about their contribution to and throughout the Great War, they were, after all, the crux of the issue that led to war declarations for many allied nations, and the violation of Belgian neutrality was in my opinion the step that doomed the German Empire to defeat in the west.

    It's interesting how the Belgian uniforms from early in the war appear to be almost a hybrid between French and German uniforms. The tunics are clearly inspired by French tunics, but some of the headgear looks very reminiscent of German headgear. You can really see the influences of Belgium's two larger neighbors on their military equipment.

    • @FireflyActual
      @FireflyActual Před 5 lety +19

      Their primary weapon was the pattern 1889 Mauser rifle, Paul Mauser's first smokeless powder gun, one that also included his revolutionary stripper clip. Few of these fine rifles remain today, as most were lost to time or destroyed in both world wars. TGW and C&Rsenal usually do these specials when the latter are about to film a major episode on a given country's firearm. They recently discussed the black powder Mausers, so hopefully the 1889 will come next.

      Yes Switzerland would be great. There military technology and doctrine development is unique amongst many nations, leading to interesting parallels and design choices. For example, the second helmet they deployed, the M1918, bears a STRONG resemblance to an American experimental helmet during WWI, which in itself borrowed heavily from the Stahlhelm, which is why it was denied, as they didnt want friendly fire incidents or to be using a design synonymous with the "evil and inferior" Germans

    I know you've talked about occupied France but because Much more of Belgium was occupied, I wonder how many escaped occupied Belgium to join the services, how they did it and so on especially after the early German reprisals for civilian snipers.

    Another comment that i would like to make is that there was a lot of friendly fire going on because of the Belgian caps with the red bands, they looked very similar to the german caps and in due to the uniforms often being very muddy it was hard to see what country the soldiers were from, so they based themselves on the caps.

    Interesting that the Belgians were concerned about parts of the cloth helmet covers getting into wounds, when nowadays almost every modern army uses helmet covers for camouflage.

      Seems strange..more concern on the odd chance that a piece of dirty HELMET cloth gets in your wound (so what about your jacket ???) than the benefit of not flickering in the sunlight of the helmet.

    Hi Indy and crew! You are doing an awesome job and I'd miss the old intro so much. Question for the out of the trenches: according to your knowledge, do you think that the eastern front specifically for an average German soldiers is "better" than in the western front? And does the mortality rates for the Germans again reflected this? Another question is will you be doing a special episode about french indochina? Hello from Portland, Oregon.

    I could never understand why so many countries could put so much workmanship into the hats but couldn't be bothered to provide gloves/warmer head gear for there soldiers. I live in a place were it's -40 Celsius in winter and couldn't imagine fighting without proper clothing. No wonder people froze to death.
