    For most people, just walking 5 miles would wear them out. Dancing while playing an instrument will wear anyone out. In that particular parade, Hitomi, a girl with an artificial leg, marched and danced every foot of that parade. She is a Super-Hero in my book.

    They had 200 members in this. About 50%-60% of the band were alumni from 2010-2017. The Tournament of Roses Parade is 5.5 miles (8.85 km) long. They performed, marched, and danced for nearly the entire time.

    At the back there's a female playing a flute who is an amputee with her bottom right leg below the knee removed, she does everything that is required of a member of this world famous band, that is TOTAL DEADICATION on her part, all the band are smiling all the time....
    This parade from start to finish was just under 7.5 miles, that is some distance to walk let alone dance & play an instrument, JUST AWESOME...REX(UK)

    • @ilox11
      @ilox11 Před 3 lety +8

      Not quite an amputee, her leg never grew at birth so the short leg was because of a birth defect, She tried just so hard to get into the band and they put her through extra tests just to be sure that she could keep up with all the choreography and the challenges. She did it and did it with a smile. So much grit and determination. Each of them shows similar traits of determination to not just do their best but to exceed their own limits. That is why they are just so very very good at what they do.

    RIP Professor Hisashi Hiramatsu, founder of the Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band. He died a month ago at 86.
    He is with Tachibana in the video walking in front of them. On January 1st (Rose Parade Day) he celebrated his 83rd birthday walking 5 miles alongside his band.

  • @lightflight3638
    @lightflight3638 Před 3 lety +51

    Courtney, you ask whether the elderly but lively gentleman at 3:55 is the school principal. He was in fact Professor Hisashi Hiramatsu, who on the day of the parade celebrated his 83rd birthday. He founded the band in 1961 when the school was all-girls’. He wanted to promote human and feminine values through music and march, at a time when school marching bands appeared to come straight out of military academies. Since then, the Kyoto Tachibana band has continued to break convention through the motivation of the kids themselves, who developed the “dance and play” marching style. Sadly, as other commentators here have said, this visionary, inspiring yet kindly gentleman passed away last March. But his spirit lives on with succeeding generations of aspiring youngsters, who right now are bravely battling to continue creating their living works of art despite the currently imposed covid restrictions. Thank you, Courtney, for your constant support for this beautiful, ground-breaking and extremely hard-working band.

    The parade was a little over 5.5 miles or almost 9 km. The band played almost the entire time except for a few small breaks, maybe 30 seconds each. They played until the very end when they got the signal to stop. All other bands had stopped playing long before so the fans at the very end really appreciated this band. czcams.com/video/l9Hhv6zGgMM/video.html

    I remember seeing this on TV. The Tournament of Roses parade is held in Pasadena, California on New Year's Day, and is one of the country's most famous parades. It's tied in with the annual Rose Bowl college football game, one of the biggest games of the season, held later in the afternoon. To be invited to participate in the parade is a MAJOR honor. That is one of the longest parades in the US, about five miles, so going that far doing all that dancing takes some serious stamina. The person walking up front is usually the band director. The other people walking with them are usually support staff, most likely volunteers.

    Although this is a High School band, in this parade Kyoto Tachibana had many former graduates marching with them. Alone in front they had the Drum Major in the middle followed by the DMs from the previous two years and what's pretty cool is that the two girls in each corner carrying the flags are the future DM for the following two years (whom are already graduates by now}. However, this band is so freaking amazing, every time I log in to youtube watching a Kyoto Tachibana video is a must even though I've already seen most of them more than a few times. This band is so addictive, just watching familiar faces from video to video feels so comforting not to mention their song repertoire as I am a Disney soundtrack freak. lol Courtney, thank you for this post, as I always, I enjoyed your video, keep up the great work. Can't wait for your next one. Cheers !!

    Hi Courtney Coulston, Behind the young Lady, who would later become the Drum Major for the 116th Term, who is carrying the green " Green Band Flag ". Is the man who founded this band, HISASHI HIRAMATSU, in 1961. He is celebrating his 83rd Birthday by marching the 5.5 miles ( 9k.m. ) along with the 114th, 115th, 116th Terms & 95 previous Alumni in this 2018 Tournament of Roses Parade. Sadly, Mr. Hiramatsu passed away last month on March 13, 2021, at the age of 86 years. He will be missed. I'm happy that you have seen a portion of the Parade. There is a compilation video of the Journey through Pasadena, California. Thanks for continuing to bring interesting videos to the fore. I shall be continuing to watch them with you. Good Luck, Good Health and Happiness to you. d:)
