I am of the same era as mr. Purdue. I worked my way thru college too. Making $0.88 an hour waitressing. Thank god for tips and the lower expense for a college education or I may not have made it. Kids today cannot do the same thing unless they work for their parents firm and are compensated at a much higher hourly rate. Kids like me, father a barber and mother a waitress, would never have gone to college.

To show how ridiculous this is you can compare percentages. Tuition has increased 3880% after aid and 7801% before aid since 1968 while minimum wage has only increased 221% in terms of real dollars. When adjusted for inflation those figures get smaller of course but it is fascinating that the cumulative rate of inflation since 1968 is 647.8%. This means not only has college become significantly more expensive compared to 1968, but minimum wage has not even kept pace with inflation (almost 3X slower). They call this the "double whammy" in economics I believe.
