- NES Atari 2600 gamepad review. www.ClassicGameRoom.com Classic Game Room reviews the Nintendo NES Atari 2600 controller gamepad! This Nintendo controller (custom it would seem) has been modified to play video games on the Atari 2600! Since both buttons do the same thing it is not an ideal Atari 7800 replacement controller. Enjoy Nintendo classics on your Atari like Mario Bros. by playing them with an NES gamepad that has an Atari plug!

R.I.P Thomas from lake grove. He was a genius when it came to modifying controllers. This one he made in this video will be sent to the museum on march 3rd in NYC. Hope to see many there.
Mark , your sense of humor amuses my day , dude , good times when games were simpler , with just two buttons to play , Thank you for showing video game history for future generations, they need to see these things
Dude, Mike puts a lot of energy in his videos. I'd say they're pretty awesome
A Neo Geo CD game pad would be perfect for the Atari. Gotta love the 8 - way digital pad
I can tel these apart by the differnt wire coming out of the top
Same.
yeah
ditto
Yeah, the big wire at the top is a giveaway that it’s not original.
i just bought a pair from you that you listed on ebay about a month ago or so. there awsome im happy with them playing 7800 games are alot easier now.
I was looking for one but then thomas offered to mod an NES controller for me instead and that is pretty cool to have :)
Mark, just letting you know as others probably have already, but this thing will work on a 7800 as well. Even with both buttons doing unique actions on games that support that.
If of course it has been modified correctly. As far as I know it is as simple as cutting a few lines on the PCB and adding 2 resistors and making 1 little jumper connection between 2 locations on the PCB.
Theres 2 videos online on how to do it. I wish it was more common. I think I may have to try my hand at soldering!
i just made one of these and this controller makes a difference!
Best thing ever made since the invention of the wheel!
I use the Sega Genesis six button arcade stick on my Atari 7800, but that's cool that now you got a NES pad to work on the Atari haha
como no poder ver tus reviews Mark como no hacerlo XD
You can see at the cord of the 2600 Nes joypad that it's different from the usual NES controller.
The Cord has a stiff beginning while normal controllers have a "hanging" cord on the pad.
If you can use that on Atari Oh My GOD!!! You can play sega Genesis with a NES controller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Raymond Doyle Is that true? Which buttons do what?
Phantom System (brazillian NES Clone)
I am a proud owner of a Atari 2600 4 switch wood-veneer console with 24 working games as of yesterday...sadly when I got it it came with ATARI 7800 JOYSTICKS! Still a fun console though, and not bad for getting it free from a teacher at my school.
I need to get one of these!
True. That's because the Atari joystick pinout is really simple. Anyone who did at least a bit of electronics, has a head on the shoulders and a hand that doesn't shake when holding a soldering iron can remake a pad for it. Sometimes you don't even need the iron.
You can tell which is which by the plastic sheilding around the cord where it conects to the Atari Nes controller.
NES cords go in smooth.
Mark- learn to play some of these, or re-learn if you just forgot.
The black ship on Planet Patrol is a friendly, so you get more points if you pick it up than you do shooting it.
The green guys on Journey: Escape are Roadies- don't avoid them, run into them for some temporary invincibility. There's also a Kool Aid Man looking guy you should run into for invincibility from that point until you clear the level with a given band member.
that actually really good playing
Well, you can tell which is which by looking at the cables connected to the controller. The connections are different because the Atari one is stiff as the NES one is loose.
That would be great for the Sega Master System.
i've tried to play 5200 games with an arcade style controller (MAME kit) and the 5200 some games didn't work properly
thomas3120 modded me an NES gamepad to work on the 7800 so that is frickin awesome!
You know, Mark is really good at video gaming. No one mentions it. He's really good at games that scroll from north to south. (top to bottom)
Definitely appreciate better the Nintendo Control Pad (as it is officially called) than the Atari 2600 joystick, since it is just a multi-directional stick and one fire button.
actually i found out which one it as because of the cord because the atari one has a big black thing on top while the normal nes controllers cord goes right into the controller itself
I believe the modification is relatively easy. See, the NES controller has a chip inside. But, Atari 2600/Master System/Genesis are all directly wired. Bypassing the chip and exchanging the cord are little more then soldering iron work. Just takes time, know how and spare parts.
I remember playing the Atari games on the Nintendo
HOLY CRAP! two worlds collide.
No link in the description on where to purchase such a fine console peripheral. :(
Pretty cool I should get one.
I didn't have to see the plug ends to tell the difference, the cable is different where it attaches to the controller.
you can use one of these on any db9 plug machine, though the button mapping might be inconvenient.
you can use the SMS(Sega Master System) controller too on the Atari 2600^^. Genesis uses same plug as SMS.
I would love to have one of those
I could tell without looking at the ports the Atari one has the big black thing sticking out of the top
I just assumed we were supposed to see the difference from it the pad as he talked of them and yeah it standed out like thorn.
A Nintendo controller that plays on an Atari 2600 plugged into a Sony TV.
And the NES controller also plays on Sega Master System and Genesis :P
you don't have to look at the plugs, just look at the cord going into the controller. the thicker cord is the modded one
so classic love it
also you can use a comodore keybourd and gamepad
You can tell which is which by looking at the wire coming out of the nes controller. I agree they need to adapt it for the ATARI 5200. That's the only bad part of the 5200, aside from the fact that it has its own zip code.
So cool.
When Can i finde the nes controller. Thats Can plays on atar
there is a guy on atariage that makes a masterplay type device that would enable you to use that or a genesis controller on the 5200
3:07 WOW, i did not know the 2600 had Kinect style controls! :O
Possibly both if your using it on the Atari 7800
Seen those for sale on ebay and ali epress
it would work, but i think the startbutton still wouldnt work on it, i have a sega genesis controller on my master system, the start button doesnt work at that thing too
Mark! Hell yeah!
That's a nice idea, actually. Sega and others have done siilar things already, with good results.
The Atari controller has a lot stiffer wire where it comes out of the controller unlike the original one
I just noticed theres never a single wire attaching the mic to any were
this controller mod works for both... i just made one and it works great on both....
oh my god you can play after burner for the sega master system with a nes controller
I want that thing sooo badly
you could always use a master system controler because its the same end as a mega drive one
Mark's game room raised the temperature of the earth by approximately 0.5 degrees celsius last year.
you don't have to look at the end the wire going into the controler at the end look completely different the nes has a smooth wire going in and the fake has a rubber rings at the end of the controler cord near the controler it self
there's 2 ways to tell
I made it this far I am at the end of your videos also that stare wars game is also know as bird vs camal.
Mark, I've asked you this before, but can you please review the device which lets u use snes controllers on the Wii, and report on any input lag or what not? It would be bad ass playing the virtual console games with a snes pad if it works well!
That's pretty sweet.
I wish there was a 7800/NES hybrid.
the right one is 2600 and the left is the nes I can tell by the cord is used
You know, B-spec mode in GT5 is good for reading. That's primarily what I use it for. Pretty soon I'm gonna make a run for 20 million.
Lake Grove? I live right there. Long Island represent!
Actually you could tell the difference by the cord right at the controller, the one for Atari has ridges on it, the original one doesn't
that means i can play sonic on my sega Genesis with that controller! what is this mario or sonic?
Buenas noches, existe un diagrama para hacer este mando?
Dude, you've got to review Jet Set Radio for Xbox 360 and PS3 when it comes out on Wednesday. It's a Dreamcast classic.
Love the Atari love mark why do you never suggest the genesis arcade stick that's what I use on my 7800 and it rocks , awesome control
lol i hooked up my pc to the tv with emulators! Custom HD settings with all those nice filters. :)
i just bought 2 controllers but there wired for the 7800 so i can use them on 2600/7800 systems. some of the 7800 games you need a better contoller than that POS Proline controller. go to atari age forums there are a few guys that sell them. you search on here there are instructional vids on how to mod NES controllers for Atari 2600/7800 systems. trust me well worth buying or make one yourself.
Does this controller works also with Sega Master System? That would be awesome!
What about the Master System controller? That works, too.
do you know if they make a third party controller for the philips CDI control pad .
Now we need an NES with an Atari 2600 joystick ;)
I know that. I opened several SNES for modding and I see several sony chips inside ;)
Has anyone played princess rescue with this nes controller? That would be epic!
I'm still waiting for a nintendo wii controller battery cover review
I was seriously surprised that he didn't plug it into the Genesis.
What makes you think emulators are responsible for the Virtual Console existing? I don't see how they are related? And just because the Wii U is out doesn't mean you can't still keep your Wii to play games on. I have Virtual Console games on my Wii and I plan on buying a Wii U. I'm going to be keeping my Wii so I can continue to play those games in the future just like I do with all my other older consoles. There's no reason to worry about transferring them over.
Does the original controller work. Or does it need rebuild
how about a neo geo aes stick that plays vectrex games?
0:11 MISSILE COMMAND I LOVE THAT GAME!!!
plug is the same. so yeah would work prolly
How's about the 7800. That extra button may come of some use.
I could tell without looking at the end but it is hard to tell
How about modifying the NES Power Pad to use on Atari?!
ele é o máximo !
Miss it
No it has a different plug suited for Atari 2600
if u fine one that can be used on a 5200 plese let me know
Haha! Great review!
If the Genesis game pad works on the 2600. Will the NES game pad for the 2600 work on the Genesis?
I reckon Luke Morse could probably modify a NES controller to work on the Atari 5200 ;)
@pepercarnage the quesion is... will it blend?
Being the dumb kid that I was, I broke off the analog sticks of my Atari2600 controllers so that the Atari would have regular D-pads like my NES....strangely enough it played just fine, in fact I plugged it in last year and still plays fine like that
0:44 the Atari one is on the right. The real NES controller is on the left.
