JOY is the REAL VILLAIN in INSIDE OUT...

- Ever wonder how Riley's life in "Inside Out" almost took a tragic turn because of Joy? Sounds crazy, right? Turns out, Joy, the supposed hero of the film, might just be the hidden villain. Let me break it down. "Inside Out" was a hit for various reasons, exploring both teens' and parents' perspectives. Interestingly, it lacked a traditional villain setup, focusing more on Riley's self-discovery. Now, here's where it gets interesting. Joy, despite her name, wasn't all sunshine. She's possessive and controlling, and she wants Riley to feel only what she dishes out. She treated sadness like an outcast, trying to confine her to a circle of sadness. Joy's intolerance to other emotions and her failure to understand their importance caused a disastrous fight in Riley's mind, which led to Riley's emotional breakdown and accelerated her depression. So, was Joy overrated? Maybe. While not a classic villain, Joy's lack of empathy, especially toward sadness, caused some of the film's most unfortunate moments, making her an unintentional antiheroine. Let me know if this theory clicks for you!

For a while I was the same. Got tired of people asking “What’s wrong?”. It eventually just turned into an anxiety disorder with one of the triggers being my own face. Bottom line? Show some emotion before it screw you in the head.
I don't want to say that Joy was the true villain of Inside Out or that she lacked empathy. She just lacked the knowledge of how feeling sad can be good for you until that one scene where she was sad herself in the memory dump
It think Joy lacked empathy because she just wants Riley to be happy and have good memories.
Yeah she just lacked about that knowledge, and that was her character development, because in the film we can finally see her accepting sadness and the other emotions to control Riley.
All Joy ever wanted was for Riley to be happy she never meant to hurt anyone.
Real joy and disgust were my favorite characters then and still to this day
Oh no, a character has a flaw that genuinely brings down the chemistry between the main group, and the whole movie is about fixing that flaw??? NOOO WAAYY SHES THE VILLAIN!!!!!!!
I guess that means Woody in Toy Story 1 is a villain now.
Exactly. The message of the movie is that it’s OKAY to be sad. That being happy all the time isn’t healthy.

I don’t think Joy is the villain, she wanted Riley to be happy, but she then realized that she was to controlling with the other emotions

I Agree
I see her as more of an antagonist
Joy is not really the villain
exactly. joy had no bad intentions whatsoever, she just needed to learn a little something
it's because Riley was trying to be happy and keep the bad thoughts away. that's why joy is so controlling

Not an excuse. Joy is narcissistic. Selfish emotions are ultimately a byproduct to want to feel joy- we want all the attention, all the love, and don't want to let others have it because we want to be happy, others be damned. Selfless joy does exist, but at its core the reason why we feel happy when our loved ones are, is because the thought of them being anything other than happy makes us sad.
Joy in its unadulterated form without any complexity is just a mania. Like living life from one high to the next, absolutely disregarding anything else that could make us come down from that high of pleasure and make us unhappy or uncomfortable. Joy being a short-sighted bitch to sadness really highlights this.

Joy wanted what she thought was best but she failed to see others point of view so she isn't truly bad since she had good intentions. It's just a fairly common flaw among actual real life people as well.
Yeah she’s not a bad guy she’s a part of Riley that’s learning and growing through experiences. It’s a coming of age story 😊
She can't be the venom because she represents a feeling. The movie is about finding Joy again. But in the end effect finds you.
Joy is not a villain, she just misunderstood, she thought Riley needed to be happy, which gave her a good reputation, but of course we always have a sad moment, like one of our beloved family members passed away, you couldn't be happy when one of your loved ones died.

What do you mean.
I honestly really love Joy as a character. She isn't a villain at all: she genuinely believes she's doing the right thing for Riley. In the same way that many people do bad things in an attempt to do good, Joy is trying to help Riley's mental state by gatekeeping other emotions, which backfires horribly and ends up hurting Riley instead. She is a good person, but she's flawed in a realistic way, and that's what makes her an amazing character. Some of the best characters in my opinion are those who aren't 100% good or 100% evil - characters need to be three-dimensional and Inside Out handled it really well. I just don't like when people take a character's flaws and use them to try to say that they're not a "good" character. All the best characters have flaws. A huge part of this film is toxic positivity and its harmful effects on the mind. Over the course of the film, Joy learns of her harmful actions and the positive effects of Sadness's sympathy towards people and realises that Riley needs Sadness to be empathetic and life a fulfilling life. She learns from her mistakes in the end. She certainly isn't a villain.
Wish stupid people would understand that.
Yeah, a villan has bad intent, and is trying to do something that is bad. Saying Joy is the villan is like saying someone was always stupid throughout their life before going through school.
No.... Really. Did you know, Woody is the villain of toy story 1? He's jealous of buzz and all the attention he's getting. In his jealous state, he causes the lamp to knock buzz out of the window and kick starts the plot of the movie. It's eventually clear to Woody that he needs to let go of this jealousy. 😱
Gotta milk those views, likes, and clicks huh?
Did you know woody was originally going to be a villain but then pixar changed him to be the woody we have now?
Exactly!
So we can't have characters that have flaws and go through character arcs where they learns lessons?
Joy being like that in the beggining is the whole point of her character arc. She learns to not be controlling and that sadness is important.
She is a flawed character who goes through a character arc. But I guess that makes her a villian to many people.🤦♂️
So I guess Woody is the villian of Toy Story 1 then right? He is an asshole who drove the conflict by being jealous and knocking Buzz out the window, SO HE IS THE VILLIAN!😈
Neverminding the character arc he goes through near the end of the film.
NOPE, that never happened!
Marlin never learned to let go of his overprotectiveness. He didn't swim across the ocean to find Nemo
Mr Incredible/Bob never learned to appreaciate his family more than his work. He didn't mourn his family when he thought they died and apologized to them later.
Carl never learned to live a happy life even without his wife. He didn't go back to save Russel and Kevin.
Merida/Brave is the one who turned her mother into a bear. She never learned to appreciate her mother.
Migeal never learned to appreciate family more than music. He didn't try to save his grandfather.

What?
I AGREE..... LIKE OMG
Humanity = failure.
I agree with your points, but.. her name is Merida, not Brave.
Rewatching the film, Joy was definitely not that bad. In fact, I like her even more now for a few reasons:
-When Sadness is claiming that she's awful, Joy reassures her she's not awful. Joy sidesteps about Sadness feeling annoying, but it should be noted that Joy only finds Sadness annoying. Joy doesn't hate Sadness, she just doesn't know what Sadness' role is (Sadness doesn't even know either)
-Joy clearly trusts Sadness to some degree, letting her direct the way out of long-term, confirming with Sadness about their being another train in imagination land, following Sadness' instructions on how to escape abstract thought, following Sadness' idea to get to the subconscious
-Joy frequently helps Sadness: when goofball island is crumbling, Joy catches Sadness from falling. When getting on the train, Joy helps Sadness up. If Joy actually hated Sadness she would've ditched Sadness the moment she got
-When Joy decides to take the recall tube, not only does she say sorry, she had TO TAKE A MINUTE TO THINK ABOUT IT. She even looked down with guilt about leaving Sadness behind. However it also needs to be remembered that if everything got restored that way, Sadness could board the train of thought back anyways
-Joy's methods of dealing with sad experiences is not inherently wrong. When Joy sees someone sad, her instinct is obviously to cheer them up. It's not "toxic", small problems can sometimes be laughed off. What she didn't understand was just how big problems do need to be dealt with by grieving. Which is what she learns anyways
-Joy DOES trust the other emotions. Frequently there's talk how she's super bossy, but she lets Fear, Disgust, and Anger provide input multiple times. She even steps aside when she understands it's not her time. However times she does take charge is for good reasons:
---when Sadness insisted she should drive, Joy blocking her caused the other emotions to be shocked, implying it was a rare moment or even they agreed. However, Riley is hitting the age to understand that her Dad's work is important, so obviously she wouldn't bust out crying
---When Joy stops Disgust on the first day of school, it's because Disgust would've responded rudely to Riley's parents, which Joy knows is bad. But in the school, DISGUST stops Joy from rushing over to the cool girls, and Joy accepts that
-Some people complain about how Joy tries to make everything in Riley's life happy, when that's kinda the point? We WANT to feel happy. The other emotions are how we CAN feel happy, by dealing with and addressing problems to make our situations the best they can be. That's why Fear couldn't stop Riley from running away, because even if she went back, she wouldn't experience any relief (Joy). As such, Riley enters the depressive mindset of "why bother". Joy then lets Sadness take over, since Joy understands now that such a big problem like this needs to be addressed so that Riley can feel happy again
BIG POINTS.
I wish this idiot would get it.
I AGREE WITH THIS SM..... OMG I'VE BEEN TRYING TO TELL EVERYONE ABOUT THIS 😭
Some people hated Sadness and then they switched up
Thats the point. The point is she learns that she shouldnt act like that.
My theory is that we put so much emphasis on feeling happiness. Riley is the same way, This being translated into the mental world is why Joy is so possessive with control. It isn’t a lack of empathy but instead (similar to what she said in the movie) she feels an overwhelming sense to help Riley be happy all the time. doesn’t make her a villain at all.
(Just my thoughts tho)
THAT IS LITERALLY THE PLOT
Thrid nidih anny dispointdd ann ann
Joy is literally the main character of Inside Out, her character development in the film reflects how Riley is growing up
Wow, so Joy is the villain.... like any other character in any other Pixar movie! Toy Story: Woody, who was actually jealous of Buzz being Andy's new favorite toy, knocked him out of the window. So, okay, that made him evil then. Cars 2: Lightning McQueen got mean at Mater just because of how he losed the race, and accused Mater for the cause. Finding Nemo: Marlin is becoming so overprotective with Nemo exploring many places. The Incredibles: Bob refuses to choose his family over work. They are the VILLAINS of their stories. 😲😲😲😲😲😲! Yeah... but, still, even if Joy became somewhat selfish, Joy still remains to be a likeable character, and at the end, she realises that she's wrong about taking too much on control to make Riley happy all the time. That's how every movie is, at the beginning or climax, the heroes became selfish just because how attached they want to achieve their goals, but after a while, they now understand from their mistakes, and give other people a chance.
True because shes always giggleing for some reason when her dad picks her up TO ME THATS UNFUNNY AND I WOULD SAY PUT ME DOWN
Congratulations you just figured out the plot to the movie
Joy and Sadness come to an understanding. She's not an anti-villain, she's just naive a bit like our immediate gratification/cancel culture where if it doesn't immediately feel good and if we aren't surrounded by affirming "yes men" then we don't want to know! The great thing about Inside Out is that the characters grow and eventually see that joy can come from the presence of family members during hard times, i.e., sad times! Life is not always sunshine and butterflies, but family should be a constant!
Anxiety is definitely the new villian of Inside Out 2.
Joy realized her faults and let sadness take control tho...she may have made mistakes but she righted her wrongs
i now live in the decade where kids movies are smarter than the adults watching them
Is anyone noticed that Riley's emotions are male and female both but her parents emotions are all male and female
Honestly, the first thing that came to mind when I saw this was Schaffrillas' little rant in the Pixar movie ranking where he tells why he thinks this whole thing is stupid.
Joy just wanted Rylie to be happy but not every situation is worth being happy. She also went to extreme lengths to keep Rylie happy
It’s because she didn’t want Riley to feel sad
I remember when i was small sadness was always my favorite
That's one thing I like about Pixar characters; moral ambiguity.

@@thinkwithvideos2238 she’s not but she’s literally the reason Joy was away which made Riley depressed..
Yeah, Sadness is not the problem, but she is a part of an emotional group. Sadness seems like a role for empathy. Joy seems to be the hero, but she is a villian, trying to fix her mistake.
@@BraceletyForeverbut if it joy never tried to stop sadness from inputting a non happy core memory, both she and sadness wouldn’t have been away from HQ
@@mewCaedin well you can’t blame her for not wanting to put it in.. and sadness was the one who started to wrestle with her for it which made her bump into all the other core memories..
Correct, but it's not her fault. None of the emotions can go against their function, but they all also have subsidiary functions: Sadness gives Riley empathy, Joy gives her envy, Fear gives her self-preservation, Anger gives her assertiveness, and Disgust gives her pride or confidence.
joy doesn’t want riley to be sad but then saddens comes in and it’s trying to tell use life isn’t happy all of the time and joy doesn’t know that

I wouldn’t call Joy a villain, she is more of a boss than the actual villain, Joy just wanted Riley to be happy even though moving to a new place can be sad and hard (friends are back in the old place, everything you find familiar is just gone) as a person who moved from one house to another, sure it may sound fun to move but eventually realization sets in
Tf you mean “hidden villain” they didn’t keep it a secret that Joy’s toxic positivity was the catalyst for the events of the film, before she learned that Sadness and empathy are just as important for Riley as she is
I've always thought that Joy wanting to be happy is actually Riley wanting to be happy cuz she feels she has to be happy so she doesn't upset her parents or make them worry or feel bothered. This film is basically Riley learning it's okay not to be happy and to feel negative emotions and that it's okay to ask for help.
Well, I think this nicely reflects the mindset of so many people. Many many people believe that only positive emotions are the correct ones and they tend to push other emotions and thoughts away instead of realizing that all emotions are valid.

Doing good or bad things doesn't make people good or bad
Joy didn't understand compressing Riley's sadness was hurting her. Just like how Anger suggested putting the idea of running away in Riley's head, it was just a bad decision
Joy is an excellent example of a Templar, someone whe did the morally wrong in the honest belief that it was for the Greater Good.
Joy is what I call “Toxic Positivity”. Heck, I already wrote a whole article about toxic positivity a couple of years ago.
Joy even left sadness in the first movie
The most sane game theory fan
ur comment is so underrated... but technically is film theory tho
Honestly this is why disgust is the best charachter
Exactly she minds her business 😂
I find this to be shallow in thought. Joy reflects the naive human desire to chase or force happiness at the expense of experiencing and honoring other emotions.
Joy in her brain functions very much like it does in our brains at a young age- wanting to take center stage, and not wanting to be sad. I think it’s developmentally appropriate, and we’ll see more character growth as the young girl ages.
Riley was always happy and when she had to move away ,she couldn't take the sadness
I think that in the end, the movie was not only about Riley developing her emotions, but also joy herself. at the end of the movie Joy is a lot more empathetic and accepting of sadness, and I think even in the trailer for inside out 2, you can really see the emotions all accept Each-other without joy always taking lead
Honestly she want riley for herself like having positivity rather than seeing the reality of what Riley really feels
I think she is the villain if joy allowed sadness to do her job then she wouldn’t have made the sadness ball and they wouldn’t have gotten sucked up and bing bong would still be alive so technically joy killed bing bong

Joy can be a villain only in such demented world where depression is "cool"
I thought inside was simply saying it's ok to cry sometimes and inside out 2 will be about self discovery 😂😊
Did you notice that in inside out the newspapers anger is always reading has a big bold print that says whatever is going on in the previous scene
I personally thought she was a villain for awhile glad someone made a video about this
She isn't a villian you idiot!
Because remember that at the end of the movie 🎥 she got along with Sadness
Bro joy clearly means well. She genuinely thinks shutting out all other emotions and keeping Riley happy 24/7 is the best thing for her. If we’re going by the logic of joy being a villain then woody is basically the villain of Toy Story 1. He tried to kill buzz by knocking him off a window and was a complete asshole to him.
Inside Out 2 is actually very similar to Inside Out 1 in this regard. Joy simply wanted what’s best for Riley and she thought that meant whatever made Riley happy and safe. Sadness obviously conflicts with this idea, Joy couldn’t possibly see the use for straight up instantly being sad, it was like a click to lose button. She realized the importance of Sadness and came around by the end of the movie. Now in Inside Out 2, Anxiety thinks Joy and the gang are making Riley look like a dweeb and setting her on a path to become a loser outcast, which seems excessive but she’s literally anxiety, it’s kind of her thing. So once again, thinking she’s doing the right thing, she wants to keep them all away from the terminal for Riley’s sake. With Sadness, Joy simply told her not to touch the console, but this time we’re dealing with Anxiety, so she’s obviously going to take every measure to keep things on her ideal path. This includes bottling the others up.
I was literally saying joy is the antagonist and then I stumbled upon this video
Joy did cause nearly all of the problems, but when she got out of the Memory Dump, she went looking for Sadness, and when they got back to Headquarters, she convinced Sadness to get the idea of running away out of Riley's head. That made this a story about growth instead of a Hero V Villain one.
I notice but after the movie she chaged hopefully she will expect the the new emotions
IM THE PROBLEM ITS ME

Joy is just doing her best to keep Riley happy and realized she was being too selfish and treated Sadness like an outcast for example. And realized she was too controlling to the other emotions and accepted Sadness in the end. But at least she tried to make things right and fix her mistakes
Not villain, just flawed protagonist. It's an example of "man vs himself" conflict. Joy was an extension of Riley, who was only 11 and felt pressure since her parents were dealing with a lot. Riley was struggling with dealing with leaving her home, and was in conflict with herself since she was trying to be happy, but she was sad and missed Minnesota.
Joy is the only positive emotion in this film, Of course she wanted to be the only feeling. Joy wanted to keep Riley from being miserable, and she knew that she was the only one capable of doing so.
in my opinion just like anxiety has different eye color compared to thier theme color even joy has blue eyes instead to yellow or hazel .
I wouldn’t consider a villain by any means. She wasn't perfect tho. And the writers definitely did that purposely. She did ostracize Sadness because she wanted what she thought was best for Riley.
At the same time, she’s also controlling the mind of a preteen, which I consider the hardest part of life where you can’t decipher most feelings. Joy in a way tries to force Riley to smile through the difficulties, also known as “toxic happiness”.
It’s not until she’s in the dump and sees the one emotion that helped shape Riley that makes her realize that Sadness plays probably the most important role in Riley’s life. She stated herself she didn’t know what Sadness really did in Riley’s mind in the beginning. But upon seeing that memory, it makes it clear that sadness plays just as important of a role in Riley’s life as all the other emotions.
It was that moment she knew she’s been keeping Riley’s true feelings hidden the entire time and times have changed, so she needed to change, starting off by finding sadness and bringing her back to headquarters. After realizing the mess the other 3 emotions got Riley in (mostly Anger), she entrusted Sadness to help make Riley vision a life without her parents, discarding the entire running away idea and going back home. After making a core memory of multiple feelings (sad Riley’s life won’t be the same, but happy she has those who know care for her.), Joy no longer saw Sadness as an burden, but as someone she can count on to properly assess the problems Riley will inevitably face in life.
Classic "gratitude" gen breed
For the love of god, why are people agreeing??
The writers made her like that on purpose, those were her character flaws.
I guess Woody is the villain for being an asshole to buzz.

I say that part of the problem lay with Sadness's questionable competence. The other three emotions knew their purpose, so Joy knew as well and she knew when to step aside and let them take care of business. Sadness never understood her own purpose, not well enough to explain it to Joy anyway.
However, Joy was pretty clueless, given that undoubtedly, Sadness had created empathy in others and gained Riley the support she needed countless times by then.
