  • In the previous video, I talk about many of the major changes the FAA has announced to take place in the spring of 2021. In this video, I would like to dive a little deeper into the upcoming changes regarding night operations.

    At 2:38 I found the answer to a question I was unsure about...then I reviewed my 2022 Remote Pilot Test Prep under Night Operations and there in the answer explanation of one of the questions was also the same answer I had overlooked while studying for my Part 107 exam. Fortunately for me, I was able to reason out the two incorrect choices and select the correct answer. So thank you for this video. Oh, and the information was not in the reading part of that material (Thanks ASA), it was only in one of the questions answer explanations.

    A little tip for Mavic Mini 1 & 2 pilots. If you are running this little guy unregistered because you can at 249g (stock airframe with stock battery and a microSD card), adding a typical 3 mile range beacon (ie LumeCube Strobe @ 10g) will satisfy night flight operations criteria but place you out of compliance with flying an unregistered drone.

    SO excited for this to go into affect! I never understood why 107 pilots had to get a waiver yet hobbyists could fly without one.

      It is kind of crazy to allow rec pilots to do something without any kind of training that 107 pilots would require before they can do it. To me it'd be more logical that 107 pilots could do it with the training and rec pilots would either need a special training certificate specifically for night or something like that.

    Thank you Jason for updating the new rules to come. Yes, the FAA bounces around like a frog in a hot frying pan as to dates! Maybe this will be very seamless in the end but I suspect more questions will arise than not.

    Hi Jason, are the latest rules for initial and recurrent testing covered in the content of existing RemotePilot101 courses for those who purchased and found the course helpful in passing their initial P107 Certification? Started the recurrent course on my RP101 and found the beginning to be the same. Guess I should have went further along to find new content? Online possibilities to take the test, night time flight and a FAA safety course are all out there as topics you are covering elsewhere but wondering if they are (or shortly be) incorporated into the active recurrent RP101 training or am I missing something?
    Thanks.

    I worked on a ship and had to stand watch at night. I was awakened from my bunk 30 minutes prior to going on duty. But the entire ship had all lights in red light. Why? Because your eyes would not react to red light and you maintained visual acuity and sensitivity with red light. I believe this is still good practice, and I wouldn't use any other color spectrum for night ops.
    Another thing...If I start flying my drone prior to sunset, I don't think I would ever transition over to night flying by accident because most drones don't have a battery life (allowing for a safe battery cushion to land) that is long enough to continue flying 30 minutes after sunset. That might change as batteries get better, but for now, I'm not worried about it. Additionally, who has a stopwatch to know when I am flying at night to enforce this rule?

    Watching the MzeroA videos I just watched “Night Operations” which does discuss the pending changes. However when the student goes to the “Review” for the first videos, the wording around night waivers doesn’t cover being able to fly at night with proper lights and training etc. Should this maybe be updated especially since the Review videos are a high point that students will hit as a refresher before testing? Just a thought.

    • @JerodBeeson
      @JerodBeeson Před 3 lety +1

      No, I don't know of any consumer drones with compliant lights built in. However, LumeCube, as well as a few other brands on amazon, have developed small strobe lights that basically velcro (I know I hate to put adhesive velcro on my drone too, but it's worth it!) to your drone and provide compliant lighting for only around $30.

      I think what will happen is that your night time currency will only be good until the end of your part 107 currency. So if you take the training in April that training currency would be good until the end of September at which time you would take a new 107 currency test which covers the night training along with everything else.
      We're all in the same situation because nobody's part 107 currency is going to match up exactly with the night time training currency until people start taking the new tests.

      Not unless your part 107 test/certificate is after they switch to the new test which will include night operations. If you get your certificate tomorrow then you are not allowed to fly at night unless you have a waiver or until you do the training, which isn't available yet but hopefully soon.

    Ok Jason, so I'm renewing my Part 107 Friday because its expiring at the end of March... Does that mean I have to wait two years to fly without or a waiver or are the planning some kind of supplement to the online recurrent test that will allow us to take advantage of that?

    • @jerseyshoredroneservices225
      @jerseyshoredroneservices225 Před 3 lety +1

      I just took my recurrent test last wednesday. I didn't want to but they kept delaying the training so I did it. We need a daylight waiver unless we take that training when it comes out. However I'm not sure if they're still issuing new 107.29 waivers. I am pretty sure that they will not keep issuing waivers much longer (if they haven't already stopped).
      Hopefully the training will be out soon and then we'll just do that online...

      I think they must be referring to their training because they really can't speak for what the FAA is going to do. In his recent videos Jason even says that he doesn't know when it's (the FAA training) coming because they've changed the date at least twice so far. Either way it'll be here when it gets here, there's really nothing much any of us can do about it...
