The Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight Is Much Stronger Than English Breakfast Tea

- The latest in our "Morning Coffee" series comes in the form of the iconic DB4 GT, gloriously lipsticked in white and driven in anger by its owner, Paul Michaels of Hexagon Classics. Introduced in the fall of 1959 the DB4 GT was a high output, low weight variant of the DB4 that was revolutionizing the company built by the car's namesake, David Brown.
The wheelbase shorter, its skin replaced by aluminum, its rear seats removed, the DB4 GT was the car that would bridge the gap from the early design touring language of the DB4 into what would become the notorious car issued to 007, the DB5. In total, 75 DB4s would be completed in GT spec, with of course another 19 handed off to the team at Zagato.
The engine though is truly where the GT shone in comparison to its non-GT brother, bringing an output of 302hp and a max speed hovering around 151mph. The cars were, in period, very fast. As Paul Michaels illustrates in our short film, they can indeed still hold their own on a crispy Sunday morning.
The example we are looking at here was ordered from the factory by none other than Thomas Sopwith (yes, that Sopwith), and is one of only four in existence to be what is considered "Build Sheet" spec DB4 GT Lightweights designed to take on Ferrari's 250GT SWBs on the GT circuits of Europe. Needless to say, it's a very special car.

I love the fact that no one says a single word during this video and just let the car speak for it self. Thats the power of a classic aston martin on its most pure form.
As soon as they showed the car WITH the engine sound coming down the road I SMILED!
This episode sans interview. As the Germans would say: Kamera, Ton und Schnitt SUPER, 👍 *Bangkok-Johnnie*
Klasse Act hahaha did I!!!
Probably bcuz u have been manipulated to believe something as sinful as an Aston can somehow bring a grimace, let alone a smile.
Just love how older sports cars sound. New ones sound ok too but they are kind of tuned to perfection too much. The old ones are like great band playing live and not giving a shit if one note was off tune.
+tuomopoika I agree. I think the goosebumps I get when they turn these older cars on are from the perfectly imperfect sound coming from a much simpler engine than those of today, in a time when mechanics > electronics. Not to say I don't like progress and that it's corrupting new cars, but this kind of car should be made from time to time just to remember the roots
Don't think anyone has ever put it better. There's perfection in a chaotic tone, when done right. In this car... it's so right.
perfectly stated
Modern cars rev much higher and sound like rather sedate sewing machines.....not my cup of tea at all. I have an Aston DB9...12 cylinders....and she growls very nicely.
that is what an engine with a soul sounds like
ValkyrieBSG yep
Agreed! Not sure why they insist on having the background music so loud. I would rather hear the beautiful symphony of that engine.
@@davidcharlesiannotti3800 I would rather hear the sweet sound of SILENCE. The best sound in the world there is!!
Because of this bloody music you can't hear It!
That clip was truly tastefully done. Whoever did the cinematography is very good at what they do. Kudos
Agreed. But they used fake cinema ratio effect which is a shame.
repent now i'm a editor, and the clip is not bad, but not the best also. The intro is way to slow. the music is very distracting from the subject: the car and the sound it makes.
try with headphones.
The filmografy was great. Good filming. Editing to. But never forget what it's meant for (what is your're main audience). This is not an art channel or music channel it's a car channel. And it took a whole minute to start the car!
joaquin maltes thnx for the tip, but the sound of the car is what we want to hear
Could you upload a version without the music? It was lovely music, but I really want to hear the engine on it's own.
I know, a car you would never have a stereo in, to begin with... We need a radio delete feature.
Garret McTavish amen
God I love how well shot all these videos are. The cinematography of every petrolicious video is like a Terrence Malick film.
No mention of the owners hobbies, favorite foods, or business. Just cars. Great video!
I don't usually comment on CZcams videos but when it kinda drifted it gave me goosebumps. This is art for me
Better off you don't comment at all. If you ain't got anything of substance to say, STFU.
@@michaelmeliambro5117 like you, shut the fuck up for the same reason.
This is one of the greatest Hits of the Brits.
The music for these videos is always excellent.
Had the pleasure of seeing this car in person at Hexagon Classics in London. I still remember seeing it from outside the dealership and immediately gravitating toward it. A masterpiece, absolutely stunning.
Even the thumbnail looks so good! Such a well done video.
Gorgeous car, directing, camera angles, and sound get better and better.
No words are needed, the sound is enough.
I love that a car that beautiful makes a sound that raunchy. It's perfect
this channel is very under rated. The work you guys put in is unreal. Thank you
what an amazing piece of engineering, nobody builds cars like the english, except maybe the Italians.
Exhaust note shivers me
Incredibly stunning. Check out the DB4 GT Zagato, which in my opinion is the *pinnacle* of Aston Martin's art in the automobile bodywork.
Hanayo Koizumi Though it is a body by Zagato, not Aston Martin.Just like an F40 has a design by Pininfarina, not Ferrari.
Арсений Филатов Zagato still, made this beauty with the base of Aston Martin thought
Арсений Филатов It's not exactly the same thing. Most Ferraris, just like the F40, are designed by Pininfarina, but built by Ferrari in Maranello. The DB4 Zagato however was based on the existing DB4 but fitted with a bespoke aluminium Body, drawn and hand made in Italy. Truly one of the all time greats.
I agree. Don't forget the DP215 and DP214 models.
Douglas Fir Those beauties are priceless..
Wow that ending echoing engine wail gave me goose bumps, beautifully done all around.
I would like to see a longer more in depth video of this aston martin. But it was a very beautiful car.👍
So, 3:47 of AGONY, somehow, wasn't enough for you????
Truly wonderful cinematography which perfectly captures driving. Your team is getting better and better at capturing that feeling.
LOVE THIS CHANNEL! My god, it's like reading the coolest all time articles in road and track or car and driver combined with a time capsule documentary. This one didn't even require words. Well done.....again
What a beautiful machine! The video was stunning!
This channel deserves well over a million subs! I really appreciate your work, please continue
Yes. Yes! YES!!! It's all about the car. Bulls eye.
Great video. I enjoyed every single second of it. Awesome settings, fun driving, lovely sounds and amazing music.
A home run in my book!
More, please.
That exhaust note was amazing!!! The DB4 GT must've been something when it first came out
This is the first video I've watched on this channel. Honestly its perfect everything is so good. I'm staying round here!
Stunning, simply stunning! The delicate music is perfect counterpoint to the rawness of the engine. What a ripping exhaust note!
Another stunning video from Petrolicious! For once, I liked the music in a car video. The classical strings and the engine note blended beautifully.
great video and snappy editing, running a close second to my favourite : 250 GTO speaks for itself...keep up the great work. this is why I subscribe!
Right now this is my favorite car. A dark blue GT4 would make my life! Lovely video!
This totally looks like one of David Zu Elfe's films. He does amazing work and gets amazing shots. If this isn't him filming it, then someone paid attention to his style! Beautiful work as always!
I think this was the best Petrolicious episode yet. No commentary, just great driving and shots. I truly appreciate the 2160p resolution and traditional film technique used. Was this real film, or post-production? What was the FPS?
I have a 42" UHD 60Hz LG IPS monitor for my system. Beautiful!
please make more videos like this, love the classical music, and the sound of the carburated engine.
Thank you for Video!!! Thank you!!! This Aston is so Beautiful and the sound is so nice!!!
Beautifully filmed and edited video. I would have liked a longer video with an interview with the owner included along with this excellent footage.
A well done video with one exception. Lower the musics volume & raise the volume of the cars own music.
You get better constantly. Bravo. I think people will enjoy it more if you play with the sound. Cut or lower the music volume to bring out the engine noise a few times. Maybe use some suttle sfx, perhaps as you shift from some shots. Amazing.
simply BEAUTIFUL! best video in weeks!
Hands down your best film yet. Well done.
Great videography, great sound, great music.
without a word being said ive learnt more about this car then any journalist could ever muster. This protrays that soul and emotion only car guys posses. fantastic job.
Similar to the Alpine A110 video you did a little while ago-no interview, just a montage of car porn. I like this one a lot. The music is perfect, the sound is high quality and really stirring, plus TONS of great car shots that let the vehicle and its design shine as the star of the picture throughout. Great work!
I dont know why but that sound ! I just listen and it makes me smile
You guys are Evolving to what Top Gear Was.. Amazing!!
Cast 1 vote for more videos like this, just the sound of the engine w/ the classy musical background common to all your videos; nice work. Couldn't agree more w/ tuomopoika's comment & liked the little fishtail part too
This was so intoxicating
Needs more engine noise, less music. The engine noise IS the classical music that we want to hear.
Ivan Levko The music compliments the car during the still shots.
Esteban Padilla Not while it's driving.
+1
Sound, the Aston does not make a noise.
Yeah, the boring boiler plate string arrangement ruins this.
Perfect soundtrack!(both the music and the car!)
This is by far one of the most beautiful Petrolicious videos I've seen in a long time
What a car and what condition the paintwork is in! Simply stunning.
Great cinematography! Great music!! Wish to know what is the music though. It's sublime
Cinematographically wonderful, yet I can't help but wish for an interview to know more about the story of this specific car and the bond it shares with it's most undoubtedly happy owner. Otherwise, congrats on the filming and music, keep up the good work!
Best video yet. Beautiful.
Their videos are really emotional, they have found the perfect point between the automotive and the soul of the people who love cars.
I really enjoyed this video a lot !!
Beautifully done!
Amazingly done, little to no talking. Driving and sounds with well put background music.
Wow!! No need for words when something that epic is on the screen.
One can't help but admire a fellow who drives like a hooligan in such a rare and valuable car !

@@michaelmeliambro5117 Shut up, your just jealous because you can't drive the car.
@@silkcutliveryjaguarxjr-9929 LOL why TF would I be jealous of an ASS-ton owner, of all things????
@@michaelmeliambro5117 Shut up, your favorite car is crap if your calling Aston that, Aston Martin is one of the most successful British car brand's in motorsport.
@@silkcutliveryjaguarxjr-9929 LOL according to who???
the goosebumps i get from that engine noise omg
Utterly beautiful. Well done.
best video i´ve ever seen here on that channel..... the music is fantastic...
At the end of this video, I found myself standing in the middle of my room applauding. Don't change a thing about how you make videos Petrolicious. Well done.
utterly stunning, thank you
At least nobody can complain about the subtitles... Well done Petrolicious! Merry Christmas!
Glorious. What a magnificent channel. Soundtrack name?

beautiful car, beautiful video. perfect job
True art!
Please, what is the name of the song playing. It isn't in the description or end of the video :'(
Absolutely stunning looks and sound to match.
I thought the video was stuck in the beginning because the car looked like it was going fast while parked! what a car!
Simply magnificent~ Thank you Petrolicious :)
Another great video! Petrolicious like always!
Bring shivers and tears......stunning.....
WAW - I am speechless. Wonderful
Great music, great car, stunning roads, pure art once again Petrolicious. Can we ask for more? I'm afraid so... a link to the musical piece used in the video please?
The way this video was filmed and the ost reminded me of The Single Man by Tom Ford. Great!
A superb film! The music fits perfectly! What is it please?
Great filming and the music
Awesome Video please more videos like that. Remember More Engine Soundl less music. Regards from Europe Barcelona Spain
God damn that was brilliant. Just so good.
The engine sound. Bravo
Breathtaking !!!!!
Amazing camera work again
it is amazing, how music and car noise can make you fall in love with a car :)
Beautiful... without a single word spoken.
When that car accelerated it put a smile on my face and only few cars were able to do that
Beautiful
Great video as always. Sometimes it's good not to have the interview. Many of the earlier films didn't. Can't believe no engine bay shot, though.
One of your best videos. That's 'Gentleman Jack' Sears' old car. See Vantage Magazine issue 13.
Nice car, looked like a handful to drive as he was having trouble staying in his own lane to even sliding during a small transition in the road.
The car truly speaks for itself, well done.
One of the best Petrolicious videos yet which is saying something considering how high the bar has been set! I think that the music is a superb match. What is it please?
beautiful film, and car- very tasteful
What a great film and the Car!
beautifully shot and edited but too much music not enough car music the exhaust sound is what i want, that's the magic
