River Severn floods and covers canal at Worcester, January 2024

  • On Thursday January 4th 2024:
Following the recent continual rain and seemingly endless storms, the rivers of the UK are all very full and are overflowing their banks in many places. The Severn is no exception and is well-known for flooding towns and cities along its course.
I last went to Worcester in October after there'd just been a storm, and made a video of the swollen river and how it encroached upon the start of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. We've had a lot more rain lately so I went back yesterday to see how it looks...
Absolutely astonishing! The river has risen very dramatically and has totally covered the canal's Bottom Lock, which is now completely under water and no longer visible!
Watch the video to see how the the river looks now, and also the hundreds of swans who are making the best of things and congregating along the 'new' river banks.
Who knows how long it'll take for the river level to drop down again. Once it does, then I imagine the CRT will be inspecting the lock to see what damage has been done.
As usual, West Midlands Trains performed very well, getting me to and from Worcester right on time. I really am impressed with them. 👍
Next time - as the forecast is dry weather for the coming week, I hope to get the Brompton out, and take it for a spin somewhere. Keeping fingers crossed anyway!
    Hope you'll enjoy the video,
    Jeff

Quite amazing how the flooding had submerged the bottom of the canal. Thank you for showing this difference. Will take Rachel when weather is better.

Thanks Gerald! Yes I wasn't expecting to see the lock under water like it was! Hope you have both survived the flooding. 👍

We've actually had a dry day today - at last! Turning colder now though - we just can't win with our weather! 😒

Hi Jeff, Who would have thought there would be even more flood water since your October vlog. Apart from that raging river the flooded areas still look quite picturesque in a strange way. The two swans 4 minutes into the video were identical, you could say a perfect match...a Swan Vesta if you will. A Terrible joke there and that was my best effort. Good to see our trains served you well again. See you on the next vlog Jeff, hopefully not too cold on the canal. Take care mate 👍

Hi Dave - yeah, those two swans were fabulous - such majestic creatures and I really do love being near them. They certainly looked alike - mind you, I've no idea how to tell male from female? Swan Vesta - I guess some people would have to Google that to know what you mean! 👍
I really do enjoy train journeys and think the railways are so undervalued - both by government and also perhaps by those who use them. Today, for instance, I went by train from Ledbury to Wolverhampton (to video some more of the canal) and all for about £15 (using my rail card) - but there's no way I would contemplate driving there anyway - who needs that stress? WMR trains were both bang on time and the ones to/from Wolverhampton (both TFW trains) were only slightly late.
Afraid WMR can't do anything about the cold weather - worse luck. Yeah, it was brass-monkeys out there on the canal today! Hopefully I'll publish the video on Saturday 😊Cheers!

Thanks Ian! yes, all that water - and yet in 6 months time we'll probably have some jobs-worth telling us to stop watering our gardens! Glad you liked the hat - a present from my sister!

Hi Jeff, Great to see another fantastic vlog of your's always well documented and crisp.
You must have a cracking camera.
Never seen high waters like it.
Hope Gladys is coming along nicely? but maybe not with this high water.
    Love the hat, looking great.
    Best wishes
    John.

      Hi John,
Thanks so much for the great feedback - that's very encouraging! Actually I'm using a handheld GoPro Hero 10 - although they are more for action-photography really, and when on my Brompton, I fix it to the handlebars. They are amazing gadgets and not massively expensive - I have paid a lot more for my Nikon SLR cameras in the past! Sometimes though, I could do with a second video camera, so one of these days will get something a bit better with a useable zoom (GoPro has a limited zoom, but it's operated by a small touch screen on the back, which is fiddly). That said, many CZcamsrs film using their mobile phones and the results are still pretty good.
I've contacted Aintree Boats today as it happens, and asked for an update, so will hopefully have more news about Gladys later this week.
I needed that hat too - it was cold... but nothing compared to today, as its horribly cold outside. I'm just trying to decide where to go tomorrow to do the next video (I hope to publish them on Saturdays from now on).
Thanks again John - much appreciated!
      Jeff

As a native Worcestershirian, I had no idea it was this bad in the capital of our hold! I'm looking to get on a narrowboat this winter, and I'd be staying in Digliss, so good to know their flood defence works!

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  Před 7 měsíci +1

Thanks for the comment! Yes, I imagine many folks living locally don't realise how high the waters rose - or how the bottom lock was totally covered. Diglis is a lovely looking marina, so you should have a great time there. If you manage to move out of the marina and go up the canal, then I can say it's one of the nicest I've seen, so would be well worth the effort. From what I've heard, flooding is quite regular in Worcester (and other places on the Severn), so I expect you'll witness this all happening again during your stay. You'll be fine in the marina though! 👍

@@Gladysthenarrowboat absolutely! I live in Kidderminster and right near the canal, we don't flood, but neighbouring Bewdley and Stourport flood nearly as bad a Worcester! It is a really nice canal network from Worcester to Brum

Swans will eat grass but have a fondness for shallow growth. So together with not being swift water birds, I doubt that they’re at their best at the mo’.
That is an impressive bunch of water. There’ll be some trees that’ll do well but many bank grown roots, will have their foundation of life removed by the current. I’m not complaining about that, it’s part of nature; there’s been floods before and there’ll be so again.

      @Gladysthenarrowboat  Před 8 měsíci +1

Hiya DC, yes, it started with a bloke called Noah, I believe!
I think the swans in Worcester are being fed bread by some people at the moment as there seemed a lot of it floating about. They all looked in good condition but I'm sure you're right about the degradation of the river bank - all that fast flowing water must be causing a lot of damage.
By the way, you'll have noticed I published this video early - on a Saturday - and I may switch to that day from now on. My thinking was that more people have spare time to watch CZcams on the weekend - it seems to have paid off with this video anyway! (Also, I wanted to publish while the floods were getting maximum TV coverage.)
