I JUST STARTED EDITING SO THIS IS GREAT. I just made a video about how i was done writing my novel and now I’m going editing and here you are, shealin, on the front page of CZcams. Don’t we love the algorithm :)
The Five of Cups is my absolute favorite card, and you are the literal embodiment of the High Priestess! Your videos always help me channel my own high priestess energy too 🔮
It's when you assume it'll be easy that it sneaks up on you and becomes hard. Murphy's Law. But you got through it. And now it's apparent where all the time went in lieu of your online presence, which is exactly the professional confidence I expected from your grand plan. You've wasted no time, and I particularly like (at the 20:10 mark) the chart you made to tackle edits from a structural standpoint. I might borrow your method on the next project to keep my novella's chapters from becoming a hodge-podge. Enjoy Southeast Asia when you cross that bridge. :)
Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your editing journey, Shaelin. Although I've been taking a long time (3rd rewrite) of my teleplay, it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who struggles with editing / revising! I'll try to pick up my pace with my edits! Also, your hair looked especially stylish on January 12th! :)
I'm right about halfway through my novel and just had a mini revelation that I need to rewrite one of the main characters. Going back and revising so much of it has really taken the wind out of my sails, but I can't focus on moving forward until it's done 😅😭 Thanks for the insight!
i love the chapter chart you're using, i'm currently on the first big developmental edit on my story (it is not going very well!) but after that i'll be at the chapter level, i'll definitely -steal- use that!
I’m so impressed that you have two books on sub (at least I think HOLDING A GHOST is going on sub) and you have ANIMAL SENSE that you’re revising! Love the new title, btw! I’m glad your revisions are going so well! I also love that you have a chapter called Age of Aquarius like the HAIR musical. 😂 And you have chapter titles. It’s so cool to see you make so much progress! I haven’t touched my PhD dissertation novel since I submitted it in August, but I’m hoping to revisit and revise again in March after the Futurescapes workshop, so I can query. It’s definitely motivating to watch this! 🥰
Great update! Once you finish this draft, any chance you can do a kind of updated video about what you've learned about "plotting" a novel that is mostly character? I feel I struggle with this a lot. Thank you!
I go through three edits. I write long hand in script because I like the action of the hand & arm as I write. It is lyrical whereas typing is all staccato. After I finish writing my first edit is structural: crossing out a lot, adding, changing, focused on the big picture, characters & flow of the work. The second edit is when it gets put into the computer. At this point I focus on sentences, refining & honing each one until I am satisfied with it (this entails of lot of writing, rewriting, deleting, rewriting). Please read Stanley Fish's book How to Write a Sentence. It changed my mind about the difference between what a sentence is & what is a Good Sentence. The last edit is all about the narration & the Narrator. The reason this is the last step is because by this time, I generally have a good feel for how I want to treat the Narrator, how close to both the author & the characters is the Narrator? how much information is he privy to? how much narration will soak into the characters' dialogue? I usually will allow a couple or few months pass between when I finish and when I pick it up again. I am working on my third novel, I have an equal number of novellas, & half a dozen (not-so)short stories. Everything is a process & this one seems to be the best for how I work. Good luck on wrapping up your project. I wish you well.
I think it's funny and appropriate that six months is what an editing process can look like Writing takes time and I too much feel that people try to trick time
For me it'll probably take at least a year, if not more total! This 6 month period was just for the initial developmental edit, but then it needs to go through feedback cycles, line edits, etc. I usually need 1-2 years to edit a manuscript, but I think 6 months is possible for some people who don't bounce around between projects as much as I do.
Love that 90% of this vlog is Fleet Foxes merch
I promise that wasn’t intentional I just have only one personality trait
@@ShaelinWritesit’s a testament to the bit that i commented this before even seeing the beanie and the hoodie
wait!! there's a beanie? 😂only saw the t-shirt and the sweater and hoodies for now @@margauxb3591

I want to read a Shaelin Bishop novel so badly. Take my money.

Immediately yes! I know this is going to be great to listen to whilst I write :)
I always did this.

actually a video on character driven fiction (including plotting of course) is a great call, will add to the list!
Thank you, Shaelin. You're always a sweetheart.@@ShaelinWrites

@ShaelinWrites, when it's time to start editing, what's you're first step?
Hi Shaelin, do you teach in writing workshops in Canada?
I don't but someday I'd love to!
I would definitely register! @@ShaelinWrites
and I would appreciate if you suggest good writing workshops in Toronto if you know any. Thank you!
Unfortunately I don't really know much about the Toronto writing scene since I've never lived there!
FLEET FOXES.
In excessive amount even (though you can never have too much!!!!)
THIS TOOK 5 MONTHS [NOT CLICKBAIT] !!!
And I’m not done so I actually minimized the severity in the title. It was anti-clickbait!
@@ShaelinWrites I'm just mucking around. This is what I visualised as soon as I saw the title.
@@itscharlieschannel haha of course I was just trying to play along with the bit
Animal Scents or Sense?
It’s The Animal Sense :)
