    Personally I see GH5 as a nice compromise between A7III and BMPCC4K. I owned the A7III for a year and was a huge Sony fanboy, but when I started taking my color grading more seriously and using Davinci Resolve, the image just fell apart. All the artifacts were really nasty. Therefore I instantly jumped on the BMPCC4K bandwagon and haven't looked back. I admit it's a pain in the arse taking the BMPCC4K for casual "run and gun" shoots though. Attaching an external monitor to it is an absolute must to use it properly, in my opinion. Oh and another HUGE thing I hated about the A7III was its user interface. It was attrocious. I can't even describe how relieved I felt when I got my hands on the BMPCC4K. The UI on it is absolutely gorgeous and so ridiculously easy to use. I was wasting my life away digging through Sony's confusing menus.

      Completely agree. I have a a7r ii which is great for gimbal work. But you are so right when it comes to color grading. It's not even a fair comparison. If you want a good video look then Sony A line is great but if you want to shoot film then BMPCC4K/6K is amazing. And what I don't understand is everybody ends up "rigging" out their cameras anyways so you might as well rig a great cinema camera. Good post!

      So how exactly would there be be more artifacts (you mean noise?) with a full frame sensor that's 36x24mm than the small Micro Four Thirds sensor (18.96mm x 10mm) the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K sports or even the barely even Super 35mm chip (23.1m x 12.9mm) in the 6K Pro? That doesn't add up. The A7III has a 4.5 times larger sensor!! To put the Blackmagic sensor in perspective, my many years old Sony A-57 mirrorless has a 15.6 x 23.5mm sensor, compared to the Blackmagics at 18.96mm x 10mm. Even the 6K Pro has a smaller sensor than my old A57!! So how could such a small sensor provide better image? I watched a few comparisons, and the Sony looks much crisper details.

    • @lumakg
      @lumakg Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@johnnybrist6699it’s not about the sensor. it’s about the heavy codec compression (h.264 on Sony) that causes artifacts when pushed in grading because there simply isn’t enough data. also it’s 8-bit (12-bit on BRaw in bmpcc) that falls apart on color heavy stuff like sky introducing banding.

    Disagree with this. You’re telling a filmmaker/videographer to choose the Sony A7 iii over the GH5 and Pocket 4K?! The Sony specs are the worst for video out of the three and it can suffer with overheating. GH5+Metabones speedbooster. AF works with my Sigma and Canon lenses. I mainly use manual focus but with the latest update and some focus tweaks, autofocus can be used more or less decent. Depends on shooting conditions etc. Lots of GH5 AF videos in youtube.
    Mainly use GH5 for efficient codecs and relative small form factor. Also, the price is okay regarding that you don't really need to rig this to get camera working decently.
    Also, the Ronin-S focus wheel works great and is suprisingly responsive for GH5+speedbooster.
    Oh... 4k50p is necessary for work that i mainly do.

    Great summary of the cameras. I have all three and I like them for different reason. GH5: Just awesome, great cinematic look, not as good in low light - but I love it! BMPCC4K- just awesome picture quality, esp when shooting raw. Just amazing. But if you set it up properly it's pretty big (Cage, batteries, ssd,...) - best picture quality of the three by far. Sony A7III - I was totally disappointed by the picture quality when I filmed in SLOG - grading is just a pain. That's why I only use it in HLG3 BT.2020 - the results here are pretty good. Great allrounder, great glas und big sensor which is not only good in low light. So ... I'm waiting for the A7IV with more than 100 Mbit/s, 10 Bit 4:2:2 internal and 4K60fps ;)

    I have used a GH5 for 18 months filming wildlife in the South Island of New Zealand. From a standing start, (My previous experience having been mainly with a Leica M3, bought new in 1959), I found it baffling, but being a firm believer in 'hands-on' I persisted and evolved my own methods of working. My editing software allowed for the use if AVC-intra, and so I paid the premium which allows me to use it. I abandoned
    VLog in favour of HLG (BT2020), but currently grade my stuff in BT709, using several LUTs which I have arrived at myself, using '3D LUT-creator' (plus a certain amount of luck). My lenses are hand-picked 'Tamrons', some primes, but mainly zooms from the 1980's; everything manually focussed and used off a tripod. My greatest 'reach' for wildlife video clips, is a Tamron 500mm 'reflex' (mirror), lens, and in good light I am able to add a 2X teleconverter, but that is mainly for windless days. Because I shoot at 50fps, the problem of securing good stills and especially action stills is not a problem, just page through the individual 'intra' frames to find 'peak', or whatever, action. To keep my files compact, I stick to 'Full HD' and only use Super HD (3840 x 2160) for computer graphics, since that downscales very easily to HD. I have found that I may, at my discretion, blow up many shots to 125pc without any sacrifice in quality, subject to the shots having been tack sharp to begin with.
    I might add that, as future-proofing insurance, my video is archived in the original HLG BT2020, although it is converted to BT709 at present for showing. Ultimately, it is destined for HEVC h265.

    I think people need to realise that Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is well a "cinema" camera and BM Design has little to interest catering to people's vlogging and casual needs. Its PURELY made for filmmaking, for people who cannot afford a RED or to rent out an ARRI. Complaining about autofocus, bad stills, and stabilisation is not a valid critique of the camera. By this definition, RED and Alexa both would be ranked inferior to Sony A7iii lol.

    Shooting with the Sony a7iii and HLG is a great look. I just did a music video with one. BUT, as a primary VIDEOGRAPHER, the BMPCC4k wins hands down. I’m not going to argue RAW at all because everyone isn’t going to use RAW, but the colors, look, and overall ease of editing trumps the a7iii on all points. If you want to take pictures and video, sure the Sony wins. If you have a secondary camera for photo, or have no desire in photos anyway and are primarily a video shooter, get the Blackmagic. It WILL NOT let you down. The only gripe about the BMPCC4k is battery life and that’s solvable with an external power solution. It’s a budget cinema camera versus a hybrid photo/video camera. Cinema wins

    I own a GH5 & GH5s and as far as I'm concerned... I have it covered. With the new Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7 and the Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 with a 2x converter it's all I need in my bag! I've looked at FF, Sony A7 lll and the Panasonic S1 and I don't see the need for full frame. AF is NOT THAT IMPORTANT as most real FilmMakers know, the GH5's image quality holds up just fine from 1080p to 4K and I love the slow mo in my cameras. I work alot in a rainforest so weather sealing is very important while these other cameras can't touch the GH5's. Although the Blackmagic has great picture quality, it isn't very well built and I would be afraid of breaking it within the first month.
    When Panasonic comes out with the GH6, we all know it will be greatly improved across the board especially with AF as it already apparent on the S1 series. If I'm going to jump to a new camera (as cost have risen greatly the last gen). then I'll save my money and wait until there are more options in a smaller package at better prices for an 8K camera. Otherwise, I don't see the need.

    I use the GH5 because I was already invested in u4:3 lenses, having started many years ago with the GF1. The GH5 never overheats, even in direct sun, unlike the A7III (see Peter Gregg's recent video about that). Perhaps the one reason I'd buy a Sony FF camera is for improved Bokeh which even the best u4:3 lenses cannot give you on the GH5. For example, to get the equivalent bokeh of an F1.4 85mm FF lens on the Sony, you'd need an F0.7 lens on the GH5, which doesn't exist even with a MetaBones adapter.

    What camera you get really depends on what you're using it for. If I were to shoot weddings, A73 all day with that autofocus speed and and low light performance. I generally shoot talking head videos in a controlled environments so the panasonic would work just fine for that since i dont really need super fast autofocus and low light performance. Same some $$ and the full articulating screen is nice for recording myself.

SO! I bought GH5 with speedbooster and use it with sigma lenses. and I am so happy with that! footage is much more cinematic. only one issue: color are not so great like canon ones, but... it’s a wonderful camera for run and gun documentary and fashion videography. and I didn’t sell a7sii and use it to shot events and weddings )

    Hi, I am a Sony shooter, two a7iii's and overall I am really really happy. It is a great all-round camera, gives you everything you need in a super-compact body. That being said, I am considering the BMPCC4k/6k for a while/now. Having two systems is a pain in the butt, but I am thinking about keeping one a7iii for occasional photos and gimbal work and I do love the Zeiss batis lineup. So if I am doing more action shots having a light camera on the gimbal with autofocus is a must. But when I see what BM can produce, the colours, the look, the 12-bit ... Recently I started using the HGL on sony and to be honest the dynamic range is amazing. If you expose correctly, you don't need RAW to change the settings in the post and it can also handle solid colour correction without destroying the image. That being said, when I am using 100fps in FHD, the picture can easily fell apart. So you can get super clean 4k 25fps or very average slow-mo. With BM you can get solid 50 fps in 4k/6k now, in 12bit - so here we go. Autofocus can be helpful, but sometimes manual focus is a must as well and that with gimbal and fly by wire lens is pretty much not possible. In the end, it will come down to the skill of a person who is using the camera. And every camera is a trade-off for something. I agree with you and your recommendation. I would do totally the same. For more or less the same reasons. But I am dying to try out the BM so.... hahaha

I'm completely new to the game and this is my first video/film camera. However, lately I have been considering switching to the A7iii or gh5 because of the autofocus function, the longer battery life and the fact that they also do still photography. We live on a sailboat and travel on a sailboat so most the material will be shot at sea. In the future I would also be interested in exploring underwater filming, but the underwater housing is quite expensive. I would love to get some input or advice if someone has some!

They all use sony sensors, so even if they use different color sciences, they still don't pop as old film used to pop. If anything, Canon's sensor captures light differently. I just got an a7 III and have been using the GH5 for a while now at work. I hear you on the color blocking artifacts, but the GH5 8bit footage is a little worse, especially in low-light, where the Sony beats it even with noisy shadows. In fact, I see less banding in the Sony footage vs GH5 footage in 8bit, @ 60p for instance (really the only time I use 8bit on GH5). Of course, 10bit beats both settings, but the Sony color science, though not perfect, seems to approximate gradations in color and tone better than the GH5 8bit codecs, and is even comparable to the 10bit footage most of the time. They're both in the same price range so you inevitably get trade-offs, at least more drastic than comparing much more expensive cameras. I went with the Sony as my personal camera because of the full frame look and low-light capability. I recently shot a wedding with the GH5 and STRUGGLED, even with a speed booster. I had to stick to a 50mm @ f1.4 the entire time during the reception. My other primes were f2.8 and they didn't work at all without using horrible-looking high ISO's. But the Sony even @ f2.8 still looked very clean, with the occasional color artifacts, which I can edit around, and certain LUT's emphasize this less than others. I like how you contextualized this though, it really depends on what you're using it for. Unfortunately at this price range, neither camera will give you everything. Even more expensive cameras become a trade-off because they get bigger and more cumbersome. Like you said, you have to really think realistically about how you'll be using it.

I'm interested in the Sony but my god the cost and having to get more lenses just feels like a HUGE cash sink... I went with the GH5 as it was relativily new (9m) and people were raving about it all over youtube, i didnt really know about cameras and sensor size at the time so i was happy with the GH5 - also if i remmeber correctly there werent many rivals with the flip screen that spins round so i can see myself/see when it runs out of juice :) the flip screen has been very useful.

I would recommend the Meike 16mm T2.2 and the Meike 25mm T2.2 (both cine lenses), great for manual focus, great quality, and fairly inexpensive. For a bit more low light performance the Mitakon 25mm f/0.95 is great. If you need a wider angle too, the Olympus 12mm f/2.0. The price of the GH5 + speed booster = the price of GH5s so if you don't need Ibis and don't use your GH5 for photos, I can only recommend you sell your GH5 and get a GH5s, a game changer for low light and better in other aspects too.

    I use the GH5 and the Canon EOS R together with the Atomos Ninja V. The canon looks amazing with the ninja, 10-bit 4K 4:2:2 at 700+ Mb/s... As Armando Ferreira put it "its a baby C200". If you can adapt to work with the 1.72x crop then this camera becomes one of the best overall cameras on the market (at this price range). If you have specific needs you may have to look elsewhere obviously. But for the type of jobs that I do that involve people more than anything they look amazing with this camera, flawless AF and the colors look amazing out of camera, even more so when I use log2 with canon cinema and canon LUTs. Very minor adjustments required, yet thanks to the huge megabit rate you can push the colors quite a lot if necessary. Another not so silly advantage of the 4k crop is that you dont need to worry about vignetting. I use the Sigma 14mm F1.8 and 24mm F1.4. Canon 85mm F1.4 IS and 70-200 F2.8 IS II. All I need is something between 35 and 50mm and I'm set. I hope you ever get the chance to try out the EOS R with the Ninja Joo!! Almost forgot, I also have the metabones x0.64 for the GH5...

All of which I sometimes require, or sometimes just to get another angle for an interview... Also, the focus pull with the ronin-s works very well the glass that I have (panny 12-35 II and oly 7-14). I just bought a Nikon Z6. I’m a Nikon photography shooter (D810), which is not a great video camera (ok to get you out of trouble, but nothing like a mirrorless) and the reason was that I can now use my Nikon glass natively (with the FTZ adapter) and have pretty good AF, in body stabilisation and excellent video and stills.
    So far I am loving it. But I don’t feel that I can get rid of the GH5 and D810 as the Z6 cannot replace both of them in quality and features. It’s not too bad but isn’t good enough at each aspect to warrant it being the only camera I keep.

    More impressed with how you deal with all the YT criticism well. Something to be learned here.
    As for cameras, I have both A73 and GH5.
    A73:
    - use mostly for stills, especially low light
    - ff gives more bokeh as more shallow dof
    - afters years, lots of lens options, native and 3rd party
    - great battery
    - small and light form factor (might be negatives for others but not for my run and gun use)
    - af is super fast and dead on
    - price under $2k and even better used on Ebay but actually new (got mine for $1500 with shutter count under 1000)
    - ibis good enough (not as good as GH5 though)
    GH5:
    - mostly video, can shoot 4k in 10-bit 4:2:2 at 400mbs and unlimited recording provides flexibility for different shooting use cases
    - very good ibis
    Cons of GH5:
    - lowlight but I use f1.4 fast prime lenses (Olympus and Pana) and metabooster ultra paired with Sigma and Canon apsc and ff lenses
    - af, check out Yoda Yeo’s hack to change shuttle angle and get better af, at least for 25 and 30fps videos

      can you explain why not the black magic? I'm really stuck between the G9 and the 4K. On one hand, I really appreciate the full sensor 4K60 on the G9 and the 4K30 10-bit internal, but the BM4K camera just seems to be the ultimate video quality.
      Yet I cannot shoot in the rain with it like I can the G9/GH5. I can't keep it in my bag and use it around for the day. The IBIS is nuts.
      The small things keep pulling me towards G9, but somewhere inside I really want to have the full 12-bit RAW for color grading... but maybe i'm not such an advanced video person to ever need that. And let's just not forget; storage with the G9's files will be way way more affordable and manageable than the storage needed to wrangle those video files on the BM4K (rightly so; much more captured data in BM).
      Tough choices.

    For a camera that costs less, than the other 2 and has far superior codecs, I am glad I got the black magic. It a little bit less run and gun than a mirrorless or DSLR, but that can easily be fixed with a few hundred in accessories.
    I have used the Sony 8 bit footage, and it cannot even hold a candle to the lowest quality black magic (12:1) raw codec. The Sony footage will easily band and artifact where the black magic can be pushed alot harder. You have to expose extremely careful with Sony codec where you don't have to with the black magic. I now use my Sony as a stills or basic video camera.
    If I am going to make a cinematic video, I will pull out the black magic!

Can not say whether the 10 bit Panasonic footage would though as I have never used it. I like how the black magic can internally record full 4k B raw codecs @ 60fps. With an update, it can do 75 fps @ full 4k in all B raw codecs! I use a small ssd drive to record the footage onto. Much better bang for the buck than an expensive high performance ssd card.

      @justinwood1570 Před 4 lety

      If you are doing run and gun and vlogging mainly, the autofocus, form factor of the gh5 and gh9 along with the internal stabilization will be a great benefit. The 10 bit will be great for CZcams and social media content. From what I understand, to get the full benefits of 4k past 30fps you need an external recorder and those can be pricy. Anyhow, I think the GH5 and GH9 have a price and convenience adavantage, where the black magic is a camera that any aspiring film maker can grow into and it can be used for anything from social media work to high end commercial work. I believe the codec of the black magic will stay relevant for many years as well. The black magic does come with it's drawbacks from very short battery life, mods needed on some gimbals like the ronin s to hold and balance the camera, to lack of autofocus. Again the black magic is not a camera I would recommend for the least costly or most convenient. To me, it is worth the extra hassle for the image quality and flexibility. One camera will suite you better depending on your needs. Hope this helps!

    I use gh5+speedbooster+sigma f1.8 18-35 or tamron f2.8 24-70, sorry is false that af doesn't work and low light performance is bad, I personally use both of them, low light is superb in sigma at f1.8 (about f1 equiv) iso 1600 at 35 mm depth of field isn't narrow (in a full frame camera I doubt you will be able to use f1.8 to shoot the same way) so you can get people in focus at partys, inside clubs, street and any other documentary style, I use autofocus before start recording in every scene, I won't trust af over my eyes, unless I'm filming myself I don't see the purpose, so I guess depends on user but ditching gh5 for both reasons isn't accurate, maybe if you would explain better why a7iii is a better suit for his style will be more helpful, btw a7iii shots look very nice, good cc process bud

    My Videos only Nature- Bird Clips, so GH5 with Metabones XL or Commlite AF with Crop is the best in Manual Focus with all my Canon Lenses. Also use EOS R for Pictures and some Video clips in special situations (Macro + Landscape)

    Gh5 - I knew I would be filming myself a lot - flip out screen makes this a sweet small, do-it-all package - also dual IBIS is amazing.

    Are you sure you over exposed properly on when shooting log on the a73? I had a way better experience with it.

    • @JooWorks
      @JooWorks  Před 4 lety

      The DR is low on s-log in 8bit. Over exposure will help with noise, but if you want to work with shadows the noise is rigth there. :)

    I have the GH5 with Panasonic native lenses and some Olympus glass. I bought this camera after a lot of research back in 2017 and purchased it in April of that year. I don't care about the autofocus as I am used to shooting in manual. For me, it's the perfect hybrid camera, shooting stills in RAW and in terms of the size of the sensor, there are many ways around that that give great results and again with low light, you can work around this too. If you are a subscriber to this channel you would have seen from Joonas' videos how to shoot in low light. The V log is good the 4k is great and so is the 422 bit. It can record to the SD cards for almost forever and the battery life is great. PLUS it has a flip screen. (although I do use a 5" monitor) And remember it doesn't get hot! like the sonys. (I was a sony shooter) These are only some of the great benefits you get from this camera and it is still a great buy today. I shoot a lot of TV commercials, corporate, and real estate videos using this camera, kitted out with rigs for audio and monitors. In my opinion, It is a solid workhorse.
    I have not used or trialled the Sony A7iii so I cannot comment on its performance. Just here to offer my experience from using the GH5. Cheers John

    You can't be serious. Sorry, the BMPCC4K wins in features and power alone. The P4K is a cinema camera. Not a vlogging camera like the Sony A7iii. The image quality in the BMPCC4K is GREAT. Not just good. Not taking stills with a CINEMA CAMERA is NOT a bad thing. WTF? No AF? No stabilization? It's a CINEMA CAMERA. Sorry. This is a trash video. You just lost a subscriber.

    To this day you still talking about full frame over m43. There are hundreds of compatible lenses out there for you to go with m43 with absolutely no problem at all. In what aspect can the a7iii compare to the others except it is smaller?

    • @ahmetkonukseven7140
      @ahmetkonukseven7140 Před 4 lety +2

      Actually you have a good camera. Just buy a "mitakon lens turbo II" (canon ef to nex) focal reducer and attach to all fullframe m42 old vintage manuel fullframe lenses on nex 5n body. It gives a really good full frame look with cheap vintage lenses.. unfortunetely you also need cheapest "ef to m42" lens adapter for attaching your lens to the mitakon focal reducer. Beside of these you can also use all fulframe canon ef lenses without autofocus on this focal reducer. Good luck!

    • @JooWorks

      It? If you refer to gh5 then there is no need to. The gh5 internal 6k codec is already better that bmpcc4k. :)
