Hey man this video was awesome. I have a question. The full pump rod sleeve on my 1600 broke. Because I triex to take it out wrong didnt realise it was sorta wedged under the distributor. Dumb move. It broke of inside the block. I tried to take it out and it desinigrated and fell inside. Is there anyway to get it out without separating the block. Any suggestion would be extremely appreciated. Signed vw dumby needs help bad.

When I was a kid growing up my father had two VW's. One was a 1500 air cooled engine, and the other was a 1600 dual port air cooled engine. The 1500 was the most reliable of the two, and it would go 140,000 miles before any engine work would be needed. The 1600 dual port was a lemon, and had to have a valve job every 30,000 miles. The 1600 dual port would also suck valves, and throw them through the pistons. We still had the VW with the 1500 engine long after the 1600 dual port was sold. As for the 1500 we had, I still see it running today. Our 1600 is long gone. I remember a friend of ours who was a VW mechanic come over to our house, and work on the 1600 engine. This video brings back memories.

Not only that I also already followed entire series of causes in Motor Engineering ( PETROL AND DIESEL ) in around 1989 - 1991 at " CEYLON GERMAN TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE. " KATUBAYDDA. , MORATUWA. , SRI LANKA. So before I joined the Institute l had help a Technician who was Overhauling a VW ENGINE. Finally when I see this job I got that sweet memory in to my Mind. He is Mr. RANDOLF L. GOMAS ( FORMER FOREMAN AT MOTOR GARAGE " SRI LANKA BROADCASTING CORPORATION " ) But at the moment I am sadly remembering him because now he is with our Loving God. Great! The 40 is a great motor. It's great that you used original dizzy, carb and fuel pump. That's how they were designed. Good to run an oil bath air cleaner and a heat riser. Also good to use thermostat sys. I would loose the fuel filter due to the fact that the stock pump has one built in. Cleaning the fuel screen is done at oil changes. Flush the gas tank and clean the screen in the tank too. You will never regret doing that. Cheers and enjoy!

I helped a good friend of mine rebuild the 1500cc motor on his '65 bus after it dropped the #3 exhaust valve, which was a common thing that happened in VW Buses, and it was such a simple thing to fix too. all that was needed to solve that problem was to do 2 things- put air scoops over the rear louvers to draw in more cooling air, and to put on an after-market oil cooler that had triple the cooling surface and did away with the cooling tower that basically blocked cooling air to #3 cylinder.

14:32 when I adjust valves, I put the pulley on the TDC mark and pop off the 2 valve covers. On one side (like the one they first adjusted) there will be 3 closed valves (in this example, both for cyl #1 + the intake on cyl #2), so I adjust those. On the other side of the engine, 1 valve will be closed (again, in this example, the exhaust valve for cyl #4 will be closed) so I adjust that as well.
I turn the pulley 1 full rotation and adjust the remaining valves. Easy peasy.

To use your governor and 28 pict, you'll have to find a bus (211) intake manifold. I would bet that you have a beetle intake on it. Then it will clear your generator better. I always learn something new from Darrin...been missing his videos! This was a great series! Keep them coming!

I had to do a double take on seeing CT cos I couldn't help noticing there's more than passing resemblance to Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool Footbal Club Manager. Love the channel and have subbed. Great CT, you have a great sounding engine, keep up with oil changes and it should run for many years, I would keep it as it is, points and condenser distributor is easy to maintain, check the point gap when changing the oil and have a spare condenser and a set of points in the glove box.
