Emmet's respect and reverence for the great performers and teachers is an example to all of us. Those of us who are older need to acknowledge that there are young ones who can take what has gone before and build on it beautifully, making it relevant for the next generation and those who are young must acknowledge that they do not and cannot know everything nor can they necessarily know better than those with experience. Humility to learn from each other will unite us and foster appreciation of each other rather than constantly dividing ourselves against each other. Older is not always wiser but neither is newer always better. Jazz is the epitome of selflessness and that is why the music is so sublime.
