Ah, New Year 1980, not knowing what comes down the line, in the end of '89. None of us back then would have imagined the end of the Cold War, dismantling of the Eastern Block & USSR. Its a real reminder that we don't know 10 years from now - plus its a really great song.

This is an ABBA song classic for all December/January dates A beautiful song with a soft melody at the beginning, a melancholic lyrics with the beautiful and very sweet interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha, a brilliant chorus with the brunette Frida (especially the power of her second voice in the second and third stanza) and a catchy chorus with the melody that grows and falls in love All ingredients of ABBA
The lyrics are so emotional, contrast with an very catchy chorus It's no funny, it's melancolich, but have a message of hope
"Happy New Year" (1980)
is a great song from the "Super Trouper" album (which includes the homonymous song and "The winner takes it all" among others)
It has a version in Spanish: "Felicidad" which was a hit here in my country Argentina
"Happy new year" have two ABBA official videos, one in English and another in Spanish, and an only TV perfomance in France 1980, and now a new ABBA official lyric video inthe end of 2022
in last November 2021, ABBA include a Christmas song tittle "Little things" in their new album "Voyage", that also was released as a single with a special video with childrens

Two reactions in a row, thank you, you've really made my Sunday! This song is actually sort of a new years anthem here in Sweden. It''s often played on the radio and other artists perform it live around New Years. Abba performed it on Swedish TV as a new years special back in -79 ( I think). I remember watching it, such a great memory!

They recorded this in 1979 🙂 It is definitely an anthem among ABBA fans - each year this song is released on a vinyl single - different colours/design each year - and we all buy it 😊

actually, in the end of "89 the iron curtain felt and all those unhappy people suffering under dictatorship ( kept alive by ABBA songs...honestly, i think they'll never know what they really meant to us, russian communism was terrifying, so their music was a refugee for us ) would finally enjoy the living in a free world.
They do a fantastic version of this in Spanish, they have many Spanish recordings you need to catch up on 🎉🎉

In Eastern Europe this song IS a New Year Anthem in some circles. Especially for the lines in the 3rd verse that can easily be translated to the fall of the idealism of communism and the Soviet Union.
I live in Sweden, the birthplace of ABBA, and I have been to many New Years party where this is played just after midnight.
1979. I was at art college. now I'm sixty-one. Where did that time go? I look back and it seems five minutes. The intervening new years gone in a flash. When you've a chance, Brooklyn, flip CZcams channels and have a listen to the guitar cover of 'Happy New Year' by Gabriella Quevedo. It's beautiful.

I watched an interview with Bjorn about this song once and he felt it could’ve been a new year anthem, but regretted that he ever wrote the year 89 in it, thinks it should’ve had no mention to have been timeless 😌

This song is VERY popular in Europe and each year returns to the top 40 in many countries. I've always loved this song and listen to it every year. I was lucky enough to own this album and find this song in 1979 right before the turn of the decade.

After all these years, that first chorus gives me goosebumps--very happy goosebumps. This is one of my favorite Abba videos. Great heartwarming song too. No one does it like Abba! My favorite line, "...keeps on going....... anyway." Just reminds me how much I wore out this awesome album back in the day!

This song is iconic,the 89 reference is especially meaningful in that it was the fall of the Berlin wall, Abba predicted it in 81! The two girls in harmony just shimmers and has so much lift.The quality of Abba makes other music seem boring . Try the visitors song, dark lyrics but the melody will get you !
ABBA: My Mama Said (1974) Montage 4k Subtitles pull it up exactly like that, make sure you have the subtitles on, no official video but the song is outstanding R&B-Funk from the 70's. Over the years other artists have remixed this song, when you get a chance you have to pull up ABBA: My Mama Said (DJ Andre remix) it's awesome!!
