I had this surgery for both joints seven years ago. Haven't had any problems.

Can you tell me your condition right before surgery?

@iovanamelendez5958 Sure, I could only open my mouth the size of my pinky finger. I was also in alot of pain.

Were both sides (joints) in bad shape or just one side? I'm having this done on one side soon.... With similar opening as you describe. My fear is the normal joint will have been limited for enough time... It will be contracted and not be able to move during surgery.... So maybe the normal joint also needs to be fixed.
Just wondering if that was the thinking of your surgeon

Glad to hear this, I was diagnosed arthrosis in both of my joints and my surgeon is recommending joint replacement, I'm still hesitant about it. How do you feel, can you full open your mouth without issues now? Were you a mouth breather?

Being a Maxillofacial surgeon, I know just what kind of legends in the field these two are. There's not many textbooks and articles that don't have their names and their work in them.

This makes me scared but I know I will need it. My jaw clenching and click has caused all my issues. Stage 4 TMJ. Early on set arthritis. Years of treatments. Arthroscopy, Botox, PRP, steroid injections, various splints, physio, exercises, changes of pillows, mattresses, different medications and the list goes on. I never sleep, have constant headaches and jaw / neck pains. Feel like I will never be normal again :(

TMJ situation is chronic and it really affects how you feel as a whole; I think I have TMJ and went for prolotherapy and it did not help; currently wearing a splint. The situation had already gone on for like 5 years or more. My low stamina due to TMH made me feel like I am partially disabled and I struggled to go out of bed; I do not sleep deep and I can relate. I from time to time feel really hopeless and suicidal. But seeing your comment; I feel like you have been trying to be strong and actively seeking treatment. The fact that I can relate made me less unhappy as well. I visited forums for TMJ and you are never alone and seeing your comment made me feel less alone too. Fight on... hugss

@@AshsplashplaysI’m sorry to hear that. I understand the feeling. My days and nights are so bad now I work from home full time because I know some mornings I can’t get out of bed. Feeling like my head has been in a vice all night. I sit every night like my jaw has been wired shut. I have arthritis medication now and seeing a pain specialist to manage it. So many doctors / consultants said they can’t help the degeneration

I can't open my mouth very wide now. I had the surgery 2 years ago. Still have pain and swelling very frequently but it doesn't hurt as much as it did before the surgery. My facial nerve recovery lasted 6 month. I do have allergies to every metal except gold, so my frequent swelling and pain might be related to it although I have titanium implant. I stayed in the hospital 3 days and it hurts like hell but it can be controlled with IV pain medication at first after that Hydrocodone will do for another week.i do think that my hearing got bad to the ear of the implant.. so for me it relieved the every day excruciating and exhausting pain of TMJS but it didn't completely remove discomfort and now I have to deal with not being able to open my mouth wide and frequent swelling and pain. But I rather live with that than previous condition. Of cause for me and my husband felacio is out of the question now🤷🥺.

When is TMJ surgery considered? I'm 49 and have had bad pain for 2,5 years. The disc has slipped in front of the joint and I can only open my mouth 35 mm. Before two arthroscopic surgeries, where the joint was cleaned up, last year it was only 25 mm. I have arthritis and it's bone on bone now, and I can't imagine living like this for the rest of my life...

I would like to make a suggestion. I had TMJ surgery in 1986, it took me five years to recover. The dentist at the time tried to put the silicone implants in me. I refused. I feel so sorry for the people who did. I had a wonderful reseacher suggested iontophersis. I took 12 treatments and it cured me and removed all scar tissue.

I have Tmj. My meniscus is laying in front of the joint. The doctor told me that I required surgery but didn’t want to do it until I was either going to ER once a week for pain or if my jaw locked up. Question- Is this the type of surgery I would have and should I wait for surgery? I also have rheumatoid in my jaws. I have also had Tmj surgery once before. In this surgery, they broke my jawbone and moved it approximately 1/8th of an inch to correct my overbite and the locking of my jaw
