  • Finishing my build of the new Airfix 1/24 scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IXc, painted as EN398 flown by Flight Lieutenant Ian Keltie, No 402 Squadron, "City of Winnipeg", based on Royal Air Force Kenley, England in March 1943.
    In previous videos I built the cockpit, the ammunition bays, and the Rolls Royce Merlin engine - in this video I paint the Day Fighter Scheme camouflage pattern, apply the decals, weather the aircraft, and finish the kit!

    You made a comment about what Airfix should tool next - Griffon engined Spitfire in 1:24 scale please! I know not everyone is a fan but I think the longer Griffon suits the Spitfire making it look more aggressive, perhaps not quite as beautiful. Their 1:48 scale bubble top Spitfire is superb so they have the CAD data already, start a petition!

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 26 dny +1

      Personally I'd like to see a Hurricane, but I guess another Spitfire is more likely given the comparatively small differences (although a Griffon engined one would have much bigger changes, of course)

    • @baanibarnes9711
      @baanibarnes9711 Před 26 dny +1

      @@ModelNerd Their original Hurricane MKI wasn't bad for it's time but the Griffon Spitfires are somewhat neglected in the larger scales, i would settle for a 1:32 scale MKXIV but Airfix have never produced kits in that scale so, come on guys, bite the bullet and get the Griffon done in 1:24. I am sure it would be a top seller due to the complete lack of this type in the larger scales (Matchbox did a reasonable but not great MK22/24 in 1:32 but definitely has some issues).

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 26 dny

      @@baanibarnes9711 Good point - better to look for gaps in the market than repeat what has been done. I hope they do bring out more 1/24 kits - my Spitfire is looking a bit lonely and I'm starting to wish I'd gone 1/32 instead.

    • @baanibarnes9711
      @baanibarnes9711 Před 26 dny

      @@ModelNerd If you want a viable companion for your 1:24 Spitfire you might want to see if you can get hold of a Trumpeter Me109G-6 in 1:24 scale. I am aware of Trumpeter's inconsistencies and occasional howlers, Westland Whirlwind fighters rudder hinge anyone? but the G-6 is an outstanding model, lots of interior stuff, a nicely reproduced engine and it looks pretty accurate with nice, fine surface detail, definitely one of their better efforts. I'm not sure if it is currently available but I think you would like it.

    Hello from Brisbane, Australia. Great job! I love how you take the time to explain the detail of what you’ve done and why. I’ve just finished building the cockpit on this same model, so I’m very much looking forward to getting the fuselage and wings attached. Fingers crossed Airfix bring out other 1/24 WW2 planes of this quality! I’m just getting back into model building after a ~35 year break since my childhood. I can’t believe at how much I’m enjoying the return and how it calms the mind. It’s videos such as yours that’s helping me get up to speed on all the developments in technique since the 1980’s. Regarding your query on the appearance of the demarcation edges of the upper cammo scheme - I believe they used rubber 'mats' laid over the areas that needed masking hence all aircraft having exactly(?) the same pattern. This would leave a very slightly soft edge between the colours, not a hard, sharp edge. Maybe its a small thing but I think the soft edge looks better, not a deal breaker though.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 28 dny +1

      Thank you, that's good to know. It's always difficult deciding how to do it, and whether certain qualities (such as a very fine soft edge) would be visible in a certain scale. I appreciate your help though - thank you!

    Exquisite build. I have to confess my initial doubts of the kit have changed , most likely due to your excellent skills. It's a very "large" kit , and would display well in any museum or hobby shop. I have not seen the Tamiya full masking sheet, it looks like it would be an advantage on such a large kit. Thanks for showing your excellent results.

    Hi MN, thanks for showing the detailed decal work. That was very interesting and insightful for tricky applications.
    Question - do you have any ideas about how to take the curse out of the shine of the canopy? How might you age/weather something like a clear part?
    Thanks for showing the depth of this epic sized model. Fantastic final look!

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před rokem

      Thanks - I got there in the end! Yes, the decals on this were daunting but ultimately went down very easily indeed. As for the canopy shine - I'm not sure. I'm not sure a matt coat, even a light one, would work and I'm sure even a very fine sand paper would be too much too. However, given that there are a few parts left over I could give it a trial I guess.
