As a high school teacher with 30 years in, I am seeing changes [and my anecdotal experience tells me it's the cell phones]. It's not so much that kids are more narcissistic, but they are more depressed, more angry, more despairing and disconnected than they used to be. And dare I say it, some are being radicalized, just like their Boomer grandparents. So, I can see confusing these things. When life moves online, it's curated and artificial. It's like everyone is a Hollywood star on the front cover. I have a younger friend who posts constantly, which, as a Boomer, I used to find really cringey, and seriously, if I didn't know her better I would have said she was a classic narc. I almost pulled away from her b/c of this behaviour. But she's far from it. But secure attachment is in jeopardy if young mums and dads [and when I was a young mum there was nothing more rewarding, more filled with love, more boring, more draining and isolating, than being home with small children, so I get it] are on their phones instead of making eyecontact with babies, and kids are on devices instead of being socialized in family groups. This last year I got out of the highschool and started to work at all grade levels and in the Middle Schools [notorious for being the worst years] it's a miracle. They are sweet, engaged, energetic. Cell phones are banned. Then, go into a Gr 9 class. Depressed zombies everywhere. It's creepy. Where this all leads us I do not know, but it's nowhere good.

The "conflation of " the trait of narcissism and the disorder of NPD is somehow become a talking point with over 300 K searches online relate to narcissism and have a tendency to over-pathologize everyone in a relationship who has ever done anything remotely selfish as a narcissist. It's similar to calling everyone who is part of a certain race a racist. It is intellectually lazy. Thank you for your common sense approach and citing research in all your videos.

In my healing journey I have found such info most helpful. It changes my dynamic of how I felt in a 24 yr marriage to a narc/addict. Social media , anxiety,
buff guys at the gym, flirtatious ego persons. It has put a healthy spin for ME. Nothing I did . I was dismissed on a daily basis, while he continued his use of steroids etc. to be buff with gym members. I am 7 months out have found my mental health improving , I chose life. As I continue my journey I can only
improve with therapy and the help of these videos of knowledge. Much thanks👍🏻

Good to know it’s not an epidemic! I guess it’s a dread we feel after narcissistic abuse when we become aware of having lived so many years in a narcissistic cluster.
It's difficult to determine since narcissism is on a scale on which we all slide in one direction or the other at different times. As for the prevalence of narcissism in politicians, and others in positions of authority, they are more exposed than ever before.
None of them are perfect, but there are many ways to determine. And they all converge on the same answer; even the rate of clinical diagnoses by those experienced in personality disorders,-both treatment and diagnosis--converge on the same answer: There is no narcissism epidemic.
Capitalism rewards narcissism. Narcissism is normalized systemically. Set you word definitions however you want. I am surrounded by narcissists

I agree that capitalism rewards narcissism, which ultimately normalizes narcissism. But if you perceive *most* of the people around you to be narcissists, then that seems like a sign that you probably need to do some self reflection that goes beyond the rationalization that capitalism has turned everyone except for you and anyone you like into a narcissist.
Yes, with regards to the end of your video and what you said about vulnerability and it being at odds with narcissism, I know that I can’t be one, because it’s so important for me to share my feelings and what’s on my mind and I like to hide my successes and stay humble. It’s almost like, I don’t want people to know what I do and my level of success, but if they appreciate my art, that means a lot to me and touches my heart. I’m in the art and design industry, but I don’t want to talk about that, because I favour humility, because that’s from the heart space and people who go on about themselves (like narcissists) are actually boring to be honest.
Basically, I feel like if I talk about myself and my success, I’m taking the humility out of my heart, and I don’t like that. Humility is peace and love and doesn’t need to prove anything or get anyones approval.

You said it. Those of us who have had our eyes opened and now understand what they are, how they operate, and why think so. Its highly prevalent now. The question is, can it be genetic? How early can the disordered thinking manifest? Do we yet understand how to treat NPD? Generally speaking they triangulate alot. Its very difficult even one to one. But in a group its a real struggle as they must dominate others.

I would disagree, your survey is so small compared to a global epidemic.
No my survey. And many include several 100’s of thousands of subjects. Huge sample size. I also say nothing of a sample on the video so I’m confused by the comment my survey is small.
I can see some people are very attached to this being true and it’s not about evidence. I’m curious why. What’s the danger of it’s not?
Dr Malkin do you believe that it would be unethical/immoral for a person diagnosed with NPD to have children?
Probably the measures and meteics of NPD are out of date. Seeing thousands of people freaking over they selfies is a bit different type of society then in 15th century
As I explained the rate of actual diagnosis of NPD, which is not out of date and, in fact, has been made both more refined and encompassing, remains at 1%. What has changed outside clinical settings is the more promiscuous use of the term narcissism.
About the whole selfie culture : the rich, as far back as the 15th century, used to compete over portraits.
The word epidemic is well understood but a problematic word as you showed however. No matter how you slice the bread. There is too many of them and most undiagnosed I highly suspect. I am in a nest of them and they do create cult like associations with one another. I live with this daily. My education in psychology solely lacked info on Cluster B personality disorders Thus I've had to learn the hard way by school of hard knocks. I wouldn't be surprised if we arnt breeding more Narcissts as poverty struggles continue and each generation not brought up devoid of abuse and toxic dynamics. The next generation is ill prepared for parenting and thus more immaturity and abuse situations. I agree that Narcissists are fluid in sloshing back and forth between types via their mood swings. I'm just glad we can all be adult enough to discuss the issue at large and not limit it to an academic few. Thanks for your expertise. Glad for the videos

3:49 the "I am an important person" thing really stood out to me when I watched Dr Grande's video on this topic (I love him, but I disagree with his view that we are in a narcissism epidemic). He mentioned how strongly this specific statement correlated with trait narcissism levels... when the inventory was being developed in the 80s or whatever.
The statement as written is pretty crappy and vague. I personally feel that I'm an important person in the sense that I am important to my family and closest friends. But they are also important to me.
I also feel that *everyone* has intrinsic value, which makes everyone important in their own right.
So I see myself as important, but no more important than anyone else.
I do now see the statement more often phrased as "I am more important than most other people", which is much more useful phrasing.
I also think that behavior during the COVID pandemic is an interesting lense for looking at narcissism across generations. Or rather to really look at the behaviors that were often attributed to "high rates of narcissism within a generation".
Was it narcissistic for gen x to hoard toilet paper and fist fight over chicken? Maybe. But maybe the generation's current position of caring for their age parents while simultaneously caring for their own children played some type of role in the compulsive need to stockpile.
It seems like hoarding supplies would provide a sense of desperately needed security for someone with so many official and unofficial dependents.
*Note* - I'm a solid millennial (1988 lol) and, I'm not gonna lie, I'm bizarrely bigoted against gen x. So I would take a lot of guilty pleasure in believing they were just being self centered jerks. But I need to get over this distaste of the stereotype that I have for that generation lol
I love that every generation gets labeled as the "me generation" when they're in adolescence and very young adulthood. Boomers were absolutely described that way, and now gen z is being described that way.
It's almost as if there's all of this moral panic about each generation forging their own path that deviates from their respective parent generation colliding with the fact that it's normal for teens and people under age 25ish to be generally annoying, arrogant, and self centered. Any potential "narcissism epidemic" can't really been evaluated until after the youngest portion of a generation ages into, at minimum, late young adulthood.
Millennials were the first generation to really use social media, so the typical arrogance and obnoxiousness of adolescence & young adulthood had a much larger platform for boomers to really wring their hands about.
And it's probably even more significant for gen z considering that their parent (gen x) and grandparent (boomer) generations really started adopting social media use around the time that gen z was starting to enter adolescence, thereby providing an even wider audience for moral panic and sensationalism about behaviors typical of the ~13-27yo age range.

I have 2 narc siblings & I definitely see it in their 30+ kids….can you do a video on the traits/ways to develop ‘secure relationships’….I’ve been healing for 4-5 yrs from codependency….have made many strides w/boundaries, etc…but now it’s like ‘who am I’?? Explain why
Beginning with the Human Potential Movement, we've been over-pathologizing mental issues. People can't be garden variety a-holes any more. It's developmentally appropriate for teens to be more than a bit self-centered. Moreover, we are not asking ourselves if the behavior or trait that they are observing is situational or is it fundamental to that person's nature or character.
I have seen something similar to this when it comes to autism--where people are quick to say that someone is autistic who might not be.
I'm from Princeton, when there were plenty of Professor Einstein stories. My father had the honor of fixing his radio. Those in the autistic community claim that Dr Einstein was autistic. NO WAY. Prof Dr Einstein had an IQ of over 150. When it comes to Prof Dr Einstein's "eccentric" behavior, I think it's better understood through the lens of Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities. It's well known that there are significant structural differences in the brains of people who are profoundly gifted, as Dr Einstein definitely was, when compared to people whose IQ is in the 125-135 range. Dr Einstein was a voracious reader. He won TWO Nobel Prizes: Physics and Peace. He was a skilled diplomat--as shown by the fact he won the Nobel Peace Prize and was invited to be the first president of Israel. He turned that down (demonstrating self awareness). He was an avid amateur musician; a very good violinist. He was a fine sailor. He was a polymath. IHe generally shows good and appropriate eye contact when photographed, whether it is a group picture or alone. He was unsuccessful in love, in that he married twice and divorced twice. A trove of personal letters from Prof Dr Einstein came to light showing that, on some level, he could be a kind and understanding father.
Yes, there are some profoundly gifted people who are also autistic. However, it's more likely that a profoundly gifted student will be diagnosed with autism, because Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities do intersect with autism. A skilled clinical psychologist who works with profoundly gifted will know how to differentiate between autism and Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities.

Yes, mostly millenials and below.... Went to dinner with a millenial, I am GenX. She never shut up about herself. Tried dinner with her and her husband twice. He is about 40, she is 31. I am 48 so very GenX. She just took over any subject and talked like a boomer. Everything was about her and her dumb ailments even though she is veer healthy. It was like listening to a boomer prattle on and on but worse because boomers at least know how to have a conversation, she did not.
As I explain in the video, there's no real evidence that either trait or pathological narcissism have increased. That's based on 100s of thousands of data points.
Every generation is convinced that the generation younger than them is more selfish/narcissistic.
