    White distilled vinegar is a great fabric softener and no residual smell. It prevents laundry soap buildup in you clothes and keeps my washing machine clean!! My sheets and sweaters have never been softer.

      I've been meaning to try this. Going to do it. I've stopped buying dryer sheets and have been loving the dryer balls, but during this very dry season, noticed the clothes are a bit staticky... I don't buy stain sprays or sticks, I use Fels-Naptha bar soap, it's the best.

    • @hboyle10
      @hboyle10 Před rokem +2

      Do you add it to your washer machine where liquid softener would go? Or just dump in on top of the laundry?

      We bought a Downy ball to put vinegar into. Works great. Otherwise we would just pour it on top of the clothes which was fine, too.

      I've tried vinegar in the wash many times, but I always smell it and it never gets things soft or white. Probably due our hard Georgia water. I just hang dry everything but towels and if it's crispy, it's crispy. 🤷 😂

      I’ve happily use vinegar for a laundry softener for 20+ years. I also considered it money saving. It’s not xtremely effective with front load washers. I’ve heard homemade detergents can void you water warranty due to soap residue backing up in the hoses. I wonder if using the vinegar prevents that back up. That would be a triple plus.

    Only groceries we buy are dry baking goods, coffee, and paper products like toilet paper.
    I never get my hair or nails done. We don't have cable...buy our used cars cash. We go out to eat maybe 1-2 times a year, we don't travel or spend nights away from home. I start all my flower and vegetable seedlings from seed. All of our furniture is used/thrifted, except our couch and mattresses. I don't buy new home decor, i thrift or upcycle everything. We are extremely frugal....but we love our life.

    Great list Steph!
    We’re living a much more minimal life now than we used to and rarely buy anything we don’t actually need. Definitely no trinkets/Knick-knacks/things that will just collect dust on a shelf etc. It feels just unnecessary for our family. I also don’t buy new crockery unless something breaks. If you declutter, and then don’t keep bringing in new stuff, the home stays minimal and peaceful. 😊

    • @Lacoux
      @Lacoux Před rokem +3

      @@annarocha3254 It's all relative. The average consumer buys around 37 pieces of clothing in the United States. So far I've purchased maybe 3 and they've all been thrifted. Thats a huge savings compared to most. When you aren't purchasing those items and are making ones that last longer the cost pans out better in the long run even if the fabric seems expensive right now. But if you really wanted to be frugal I have thrifted linen and cotton extremely cheap at thrift stores for clothing.

    • @annarocha3254
      @annarocha3254 Před rokem

    Our kids are now grown, youngest is 25, but I truly appreciate having some of our earlier decisions affirmed by your suggestions. Thank you! We were often the "weird family" but somehow our kids turned out just fine and are thriving. One thing I also gave up long ago was Saran Wrap. I found that a bowl covered by a plate means that something else can sit on top of it. Silicone sandwich bags are pricey but last forever and I can occasionally find them at the thrift store. Even foil and parchment paper can be eliminated. If you decide to do without, somehow you find other solutions.

Sometimes I feel like I’m just being cheap but there really is purpose behind all of it. I like the way that you frame that saving money in what you buy also contributes financially to the household. I don’t buy Christmas, birthday cards anymore. I bought an origami book and decorate with the figures i make. They turn out really cute and people enjoy them. I found a package of card stock they sell at Wallmart that measures perfectly. Fold in half and it makes two cards. I even learned how to make the envelopes. . When i first tried making them, they were not spectacular. But practice makes perfect and now everybody loves then.

    As much as possible I try and fill vases with flowers or foliage from the garden instead of buying expensive bunches from the supermarket or a flower shop. Sometimes I do buy larger bouquets, if they're really special and I can't get anything the same or similar from my own garden. But I often do without flowers and make displays and arrangements just from interesting shaped, self-grown foliage. Or I gather stems and branches when I'm out walking. It's creative and very therapeutic. I'm guessing with your professional flower growing you have an abundance of blooms at home too whenever you need them!

    I grew up with parents who's parents had lived through the great depression. We wore it out and used it up. Always. I remember mom cutting open toothpaste tubes and ketchup, shampoo, etc bottles to scrape out that last golden bit. I had 2 dresses for play, 3 for school and 2 for church services. I had 2 pairs of shoes, one for church and one for school and i went barefoot at home, i did have barn boots andboften snow boots.... Sometimes "boots" were sandwich bags and rubber bands. 😆🤷
    As a homemaker, i stretch pennies and cut corners wherever possible. Things like making crochet dish cloths, cutting sponges into quarters... (We have a hobby farm, so messes happen, quartered sponges work great for scrubbing water buckets and duck pools) i do buy paper towels.... I didnt for many years but my husband likes them and so do my teens, soooo i buy the viva brand and they use them once to dry hands and then they get dried out and we save them for real messes... Like cat puke. 😆 Or baby goose poo. 😂 I want to switch to a hard dishsoap bar, and i tried a shampoo bar once and it kind of worked but i usedbit wrong, so i want to try again one day. I like the idea of no waste. I love to hang our laundry out to dry, but i still use my dryer for towels. I prefer soft towels. I make all of my dresses and petticoats and chemises. I make or refashion most of both of my girls' dresses and skirts.

    I guess I am very frugal. My kids toys are hand me downs from what my husband or I had and we make all our own foods from scratch. I buy 100 lbs of sugar for the year. We butcher our own animals, we raise all our animals-chickens for eggs and meat, beef, dairy cows, pigs, sheep, grow our own crops for feed and for personal use-wheat, oats, i repurpose all fabric for skirts/bags/rags/personal cloths/curtains/patches on clothing with holes. We also don’t buy magazine subscriptions mostly because we don’t have time to sit and read. Spring thru fall we are outside sun up to sun down, rainy days we are baking/canning/meal prepping for upcoming weeks. Winter we spend our time sewing/milking/moving snow, processing milk/baking, doing small in home improvements that we don’t have time for in the spring/fall. I homeschool our youngest and have a special needs daughter that needs daily reminders because her memory is very short term. We use an Alexa to set reminders for her. We use every free service we can find to stretch our finances. We only use cash. If we can’t buy it, we don’t get it. I think that’s the biggest thing for saving money.

I just started using castor oil and I love the way it’s improving the skin on my face! I learned the hard way that they recommend not using it during week 1 of your cycle, but other than then it’s something I would encourage ladies to research. :) It also replaces A+D or first aid ointment for me, for cuts or really dry spots of skin.

We've learned a lot and priorities have changed a lot. I've come to appreciate having less stuff and am more careful what I bring into our home. I like repurposing and second hand more than I used to, even in times we can afford to buy new. For avoiding fast food, do you make sure to eat before leaving the house, or how do you do that? Also, just a suggestion for a video..would enjoy seeing how you use your cow's milk ..& how is it different than from before you've had her since you've had a dairy farm all along? 😊 Enjoy your content so much🤍

Pretty much live a very minimalist life with a few necessary exceptions. My husband and I are retired since last year. I was 58 and he was 60! We are extremely blessed by our Heavenly Father and give Him all the glory ❤. I love your videos very much❤❤❤

    Great list, thanks for sharing! I have such dry skin, that most days I need my "moisturising system" (spray, serum, rich moisturiser, and then a tiny bit of vitamin c product), but I make sure to get cheaper stuff and usually only when it's half-price. I've found a good vitamin C product that really helped get rid of the nearly permanent tan on my arms and face, which was great, it's by The Ordinary, in case anyone wanted a recommendation. I don't wear any make-up, though, which is just as well, since I am not good about cleansing every day.

    Growing up poor our parents didn't spend on anything extra. Everything was 2nd hand and farmers market. The crema container was recycled for salsa for example. However one man's trash is another's treasure. Hair cuts were done at home by mom or dad 😩. Now I cut my own hair except once a year when I want the salon style hair.

    This sounds silly 😉 I use baking soda for a cleanser on my face (for the most part)... and I have an Italian aunt that has beautiful skin, she told me she used olive oil on her face. I never forgot it, and I recently started using it. Love it, don’t know I’ll use anything else!😊

      I use olive oil for moisturizer too. I'm sensitive and most face lotions make my eyes cry...😭 I do, do better with serums that have natural ingredients. Right now I'm using Leven Rose vitamin E serum for face and neck. A little goes a long way & it has essential oils like rose in it and is very nice. Still using the olive oil for body and lip moisturizer. Also heard it works great for oil pulling, like a mouthwash! Just spit it in garbage, not sink.

    I too don't use or buy a lot of anti aging products either, just one clean lotion I use day and night. I found "face yoga" when I was about 32, im 36 now and it has been a game changer. It's free and non toxic! You take maybe 20 mins to learn at the "poses" which you can find here on CZcams and then I just do a couple every time I do my face routine. mine is also about 10 mins its super simple and easy to add in! its like stopped my aging. its actually reversed my forehead wrinkles! I swear buy it and tell everyone I know!

    I used to enjoy yard sales. I got toys and clothes for a growing boy. But I did have kitchen items on my list I would like. Though I saw camping gear, tools and lawn care items, cars, books, boats, hammocks, jewelry and most anything people might buy/sell. One girl I knew would go with her mom and look for gold (10-18k) and sterling silver jewelry. She was very successful and had a beautiful collection and also sold pieces to cash in on the gold market.
    I love my apple corer/slicer as my favorite apple is Fuji and like to eat the skin though I guess someone could peel the apple first then cut it, also saves time.
    I like to extreme coupon so I get most CVS/Walgreens items free or extremely cheap. I shop *multiple grocery stores for loss leaders/sale items. I skip the inner aisles of grocery stores for the most part. I do use frozen veggies. *My grocery stores(4) are on 4 corner of an intersection so very close together, no waste gas ⛽️.
    For those who use fresh vegetables. Be aware that most the green are edible examples: radish greens, broccoli leaves, cauliflower green leaves. If you garden, the leaves of squash, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower and sweet potatoes. Many should be cooked for taste and texture, but other can be eaten fresh in salads. Sweet potato leaves taste like sweet potatoes and are great in salads. Just as pumpkin seeds are edible cooked other veggies seeds are also edible. Please do you due diligence to be sure any leaves and seeds are edible and use small amounts until you know if you are sensitive or allergic. Warning, do NOT eat tomato 🍅 leaves ever, they come from the nightshade family.

    Did I do something wrong? I'd like to try it! Also, which Red Aspen nails are the white ones you often wear in your videos? They're really pretty! Do you file them down or is there a short version? What is the set in your video today? ☺

      So I think The Minimal Mom did a great video of this called "the easiest way to declutter clothes". She said to build your wardrobe on your bed, pulling your favorite things together. Then see what you're missing and purchase just that. Get rid of the rest or put pieces in a "time will tell box".

I have bottles that just sit. I do use body oils but they are usually from the baby line with no chemicals and 3 oils thats all I use. I dont do alot on skin care either but i am pregnant and my skin is just aweful so I sarted using Pacifica products which are all natural products and its been good but ya that is a money drain with all these products. Cars we are doing just 1. We do need to upgrade because we are growing in size haha another 1 on the way so we will sell my suv now which breaks my heart but I am a SAHM and my husband works at home there is no reason to have 2 car payments for us.
