  • GERMANY: No breakthrough on the asylum issue! Conference of Prime Ministers ends without results
The top meeting of the states with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Thursday did not bring about a breakthrough on important issues such as the outsourcing of asylum procedures to third countries and compulsory insurance against extreme weather damage. However, both sides promised to continue working on the issues. The CDU-led states in particular pushed for concrete models for asylum procedures in third countries. Scholz announced that the federal government would present proposals by the next federal-state meeting in December. However, experts expressed skepticism about the transferability of the plans of Great Britain and Italy to Germany and pointed to high legal and practical hurdles.
The Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil (SPD), emphasized the many open questions and warned against jumping to conclusions. In contrast, the Prime Minister of Hesse, Boris Rhein (CDU), was convinced that concrete models would be developed and proposals made for implementation. The states of Bavaria and Saxony are also calling for criminals and dangerous individuals who are required to leave the country to be taken into immediate custody.
There was also no agreement on compulsory insurance against extreme weather damage. The federal states reiterated their demand, but were defeated by the federal government, which proposed an opt-out model for new buildings. Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) rejects compulsory insurance because it would make housing more expensive and create bureaucracy. Scholz stressed that the discussion would be continued carefully in order to reach a good result soon.
