Damien Chazelle Thinks Jimmy Fallon's Golden Globes Cold Open One-Upped La La Land

Damien Chazelle is a genius
Justin Hurwitz is a fucking genius

Madalin Pana It's called paying homage. It's what you do when there's something you like or if something inspires you.
Madalin Pana well, all the great artists steal, not exactly the same
Madalin Pana LOL Did you even watch this movie?
Eslam Suliman John is a literal legend
An unforgettable film that will be considered a classic decades from now.
Luke Koebele no. Great film? Yes! But the classics are the films that Chazelle clearly used as influenced like The Young Girls of Rocherfort & The Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Jacques Demy, A Woman is a Woman by Jean-Luc Godard, Punch Drunk Love by Paul Thomas Anderson and Singin' in the Rain
Luke Koebele vimeo.com/200550228 ca copy cat
Jay Debbarma Pulp Fiction is garbage.
PietreADI there's nothing of Tarkovsky or Kurosawa in La La Land. The camera movements and cinematography comes straight from Paul Thomas Anderson and One From The Heart by Francis Ford Coppola. His first film which is not Whiplash is called Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench is basically Cassevetes mixed with Godard
I like your picks kenneth merced calo. There's nothing wrong, however, with taking inspiration from other works. Btw PTA is one of my favorite directors. I think time will prove this to be a classic. The film has many strengths. The relatability being possibly the biggest.
Damien Chazelle is so damn talented..!!! he is just 32 and he directed such an amazing movie...
movies* Whiplash was awesome too
Romario García yass..!!!
Jay Debbarma oh I never knew he wrote tht movie... wow thnx for the info

Madalin Pana guys cmon just based on one movie wht abt his other ones... at least he had the thought to put it all together and make an awesome mixture of all those.. still appreciated
I met Damien Chazelle once, awkwardly passing out pretzels at a Jazz Club in midtown. In a room full of other accomplished folks in entertainment, he was the ONLY person to have a conversation with me (about Whiplash which I hadn't seen at the time) and was incredibly humble and sweet. I'm so happy to see him succeed! If there's one person who deserves it, it's him
The more I hear and see about this guy the more likeable he becomes. There are good people in Hollywood among all the egos.
Who else was there?
Omg, really?
Fr?
WOOOW
Honestly, I would more so describe La La Land as real and sobering than happy and magical.
Trustfund Hippy It's both
I was just saying, either Jimmy haven't seen the movie or completely missed the point. I am surprised that Damien didn't say anything to that
Michal Motyčka he probably didn't say anything to it to keep the ending a surprise for people who haven't seen it.
Trustfund Hippy yeah, probably
Trustfund Hippy It was bitter-sweet that's for sure. That ending had me real fucked up.
He is just 32, imagine all the great supply of movies for next 40-50 years. He already nailed it with Whiplash and La La Land,
We can only hope. There are one-shot talents too. Heard of M. Night Shyamalan? He was only 26 when he made the amazing movie "The Sixth Sense."
Yeah, that's right. We can only hope.
@@jimbolic0809 no he was 29
@@doyle8120 I'm 13 and next year my sci-fi stop motion film is finished. Not that it's a masterpiece but i find the story and dialogue very good. My movie is also full of vision. I think this will be the best Sci-Fi western ( There aren't that many sci-fi westerns )
@@larzguy3714 why u telling me this , i don't give a fuck...
He's so chill for someone who who burnt his ass off for this movie.
Honestly Damien deserves all the praise and accolades La La Land has been getting. I'm not going to complain if this or Moonlight takes best picture. I'm happy for both.
Rubberr Duckyy my 2 favorite films of last year!
+Guy Simchony You know a movie is good when it's a musical romance but you're single and have seen it 4 times in cinemas surrounded by couples
MrRevan Haha yep. My life story.
Rubberr Duckyy absolutely
+Teenage POV thank you soo much😆

+harrypotteravenclaw THANK YOU!!! He's merely paying tribute to musical classics
+Jay Debbarma It'll be his first non musical movie !! CAN'T WAIT
Damien Chazelle is 32 , he has already made two of the best directed and acted movies of all time , back to back (whiplash and la la land) can't wait to see what he has in store , on pace to becoming one of the all time great filmmakers
First Man is a masterpiece too
@@rida13rock Nah it's great but not much we haven't seen before?
@@larzguy3714 Trust me you should reconsider about your thoughts on the film ..
we haven't seen anything like that film, Damien Chazelle didn't really care about the space achievement of NASA and USA, he focused on the human side of Armstrong's journey to the moon ..
the cinematography was unbelievable, and the soundtracks were absolutely out of the this world .. for me that was more than a just a film, it was a message to all man kind especially if you focused on how Amstrong looked at earth from the moon, Damien Chazelle shot that scene to show us how ridiculous our wars and fights are, because from above the moon it looks like we're all one ..
@@rida13rock Don't fucking tell me what's good cinematography. I'm making movies myself, not as good as First Man, but still pretty good.
Lars Olavsgaard wow somebody’s grouchy
I've seen the movie now 5 times!! It keeps getting better and better!!
George Tarantino same haha every time I cry
George Tarantino we should be friends, I've already watched it 14 times, majorly alone :(
OMygooood! Me tooo!! I just finished watching it for the 5th time!!!
George Tarantino I've only seen it 3 times😭
George Tarantino 8 times and still counting
Damian chazelle is an underappreciated director in my opinion, directing whiplash and now this before the age of 35. Truly, this man will be compared to Kubrick if he keeps this going.
Viet Phan nah. The best american filmmaker right now by far is Paul Thomas Anderson.
Jay Debbarma who cares if it is in space? Nolan wants to be like Kubrick and he did Interstellar, but he's mediocre and Interstellar was pretty bad.
Kenneth, finally someone I completely agree with! PT Anderson is the best right now and Interstellar was not good at all.
I think comparing him to Kubrick is too much. Ridley Scott made two great films in Alien and Blade Runner, but he's far from Kubrick nowadays. Hopefully Chazelle is wiser and has a clearer auteur vision for his films, which Ridley Scott definitely lost.
So if he directed Whiplash and La La Land after turning 35 or 40 or older, suddenly it wouldn't make him as good a director? Would it be less impressive? No.
I think our culture is severely obsessed with ageism.
I'm 19, I'm going to start film school this fall and I'm both incredibly inspired and horrendously jealous of Damien Chazelle.
Mitch Brown best of luck
I know what you mean. I would love to be him just for one day he must be so respected in Hollywood now. Good luck with film school enjoy it :)
Dude literally struck gold with his first movie. But he also went to Harvard so...
how's it going now
How are you now
he's a cute director
awwww
SO cute
masitah kamalrudin shut up, go to sleep
how do you know it's midnight right now. But ok will do
Aww look at Jimmy, he looks so genuinely enchanted and blown away by the film. He's fanboying as much as we are!
Everyone is a fan of something, otherwise those talented people wouldn't be where they stand.
La la land is fucking amazing!!!! IT deserves all the awards that it has had so far!!
What a talented young director! and knowing that La la land is only his second long movie!!?? UNBELIEVABLE!!
I think everytime you watch La La Land, you discover something new or a new feeling that you didn't even know you could feel comes up.
I didn't expect to like this movie very much because I really don't like musicals and I just had a feeling this movie could be overrated. I ended up loving it SO MUCH... The cinematography is breathtaking. The story is beautiful. But I wouldn't say it's entirely a feel good movie like some people say. It made me feel very emotional in lots of ways. And it showed that sometimes things just don't work out because people didn't meet at the right time... Or it was the right time because they needed each other exactly at that time.
You've expressed this so eloquently. I feel the same way. There were some pets where I was sobbing and I usually hate musicals. I think people have over hyped it for the wrong reasons though.
The irony that I was just listening to some La La Land songs, they're so bright cheery & wonderful & I haven't even seen the movie, I dunno if it's more surprising as The Artist as that showed a black & white plus silent movie could be successful but this showed musicals are still capable of being a success, both surprising successes & I respect the risk taken
Some guy named Mike Both Hazanavicious and Chazelle have given me the chance to see old school Hollywood work in an age of reboots and superheroes (which I adore). Both movies are outstanding pieces of art in my opinion.
Lainie medina I've heard plenty of good about La La Land & I'm not trying to belittle one for the record, I've only watched the Artist think it was on Christmas Day & it was great, really engaging & it makes you focus
Some guy named Mike Man The Artist is just sublime! I've never left a cinema feeling so in awe an in love with the industry as I did when I saw that movie! Every little detail was made to compensate the silence and give you an insight of the characters true feelings! The sequences, pacing and overall achievement of the black and white scale, is beautiful!
Lainie medina It's great to see passion from people nowadays, being 18 & different from my peers I feel like they really lack variety, emotion etc so it's heartwarming to see expression isn't dead in people, have a good day miss
Some guy named Mike In a world where incomprehensible rap lyrics and suicidal-laden power ballads, I agree that it's nice to hear happy songs. I just went through a breakup and am glad I found La La Land's non-depressing soundtrack😄
He was only 32, but he made 2 masterpieces. He also broke the record of a movie with the most Oscars nominations. I knew there's many great directors who made some masterpieces when they were young, like Tarantino, etc, but let's just respect this man right here!
It's so cute how nervous he is. Love La La Land. Damien and Justin did a great job. I'm saying both of them because that music makes that movie, sets the mood and makes you fall in love with it. This music already sounds like a classic. And it "only" took 6 years to make this movie.
He's another Spielberg. Very talented. I will see anything he directs.
doug avila he's also a Jew
@@charismabros5352 He's French and Roman Catholic
La La Land consumed me for at least two years after first watching it. I listened to the whole album every day on my 45 minute trek home from a summer internship, blazing hot Nashville sun with bumper to bumper traffic and my windows rolled down. I was at a pivotal moment in my life, young and impressionable and not sure what would be next after college, always daydreaming. Every time I watch the movie I am so emotional and consumed once again by all of my forgotten dreams that I never pursued and wonder if it’s too late. Ugh I just love this move and soundtrack so freaking much.
He'll go down as one of the best directors in movie history
I'm in love with his vision
Harshita Kushwaha he doesn't even need glasses!
Aww he is so cute
He is my professor’s son so crazy
Kinda makes me want to watch the movie again. For like the 14th time.
There’s just so many reasons to love La La Land. It’s such a great classic film
It's an amazing movie! I think one that I could watcg over and over and not get sick of it

Fallon's video is watchable ?! Damn, Chazelle turns everything in gold!
I think he doesn't quite like it when people call out how young he is - he even tries to look older than 32.
It's going to be remembered as one of the all time great movies in my opinion
The future of cinema. Damien Chazelle!

This dude's a creative genius! I give him huge props!
why is today's Jimmy Fallon full of damn good looking people..!!! 😃😃
You find that guy good looking ? lol
+Maxblind20 yes to a point..he is!!
ok then everyone is good looking.
Maxblind20 lol okay! i aint complaining...he just seems too cute for me
Jay Debbarma umm i didnt mean like a child though!!! lol cute in a different aspect!! XD
I went to see it yesterday and I smiled the whole time. And I have been listening to the soundtrack about a 24 hours now..
La la land is one of the most amazing movies i have seen in awhile! I loved it so much! I had tears of joy and happiness watching it!
the lovely night scene is my fav and when he explained how everyone worked hard on that scene made me appreciate it even more
He’s an incredible director. Whiplash is probably my favorite movie of all time. The man made two movies nominated for nineteen Oscars all together, and he’s not even forty. Such a talented man.
This video is the response to everyone who's saying this film is overrated, Damien is probably the best director right now and he deserves every single nomination. Can't wait till next sunday for La La Land to break the record in the Oscars!!
The funniest part of the golden globes opening was when Ryan spat a polo into Jimmy's mouth
I look at this guy and i just see his visions and eye for art and how he impliments it and goosssshhhhh
The best filmmaker working in Cinema today. Already directed two classics Whiplash and La La Land. Plus he's an insanely humble guy and he inspires me everyday!
The passion with which they both speak is real. I feel inspired.
He is so cute!
Wow! This was a really great interview!
he's one in a million! i can't wait to see his next movie !
"here's a clip of.. me" LOLOLOLOL omg i love him so much!!
32 years old , Damien is such a great genius ! Hope he will make more great movies in the future
omg... i love him so much. i expect his next flim
Have the Roots made a full version of Jimmy's outro song? If not, then I'd love to see that happen! Sounds so awesome and groovy.
This guy deserves every award he's getting
Oh I love this....Damien Chazelle loving him so much. He is so passionate about this film, dedicated......his personality towards this movie truly symbolizes the essence of the movie - Love , passion , dreams and surrealism. Like said - Its Conflict and Its Compromise and its very Exciting!!!
Damien's passion and heart shine through in your work. On to the oscars!Congrats in advance! #bestdirector
jimmy describes so well my feelings
La humildad que este hombre proyecta es admirable felicidades por La la land
he is talented, dream come true. and i love that movie.
Such a talented movie maker!!
hes so talented
anyone else obsessed with this movie and everyone involved?
Damien tbh is amazing 😍😍😍
He's sooo so cute and brilliant!
Why can't Fallon ever speak in anything less than hyperbole?
and why he always, always, talk too much?
HannaHannabelle because this is a talk show and he needs to ask questions and get the conversation going?
sizzy rocket yeahhh but it doesn't always have to be his point of view, isn't it?
sizzy rocket if this is a monologue I can understand. but isn't it a dialogue?
I have never thought about that before now. And now I cannot unsee it
I love that Jimmy is fanboying out. He legitimately seems to be in love with the movie and not just part of the hype tour.
DAMIEN'S right he got inspiration from sunset in BALI, INDONESIA. for set and view in LA LA LAND. because Bali like paradise, very wonderful
Glad this movie's done so well ($300 Million! Damn) LOVED Whiplash and I was excited for this since last summer when the first teaser hit. Glad this wasnt an incredible movie that no one saw. Always good to see a great movie get the recognition it deserves!
i love this movie! and i love how much jimmy loves it too :D
Damien Chazelle and Jimmy Fallon in one video...JUST AMAZING
He's talented and handsome... He deserves all the glory in the world!!!
This interview needs to be 30min longer.
Talented!!!!
he is fantastic what a genius
I dont know if your next movies are going to be good, but thx for La La Land!!!
Thank Hollywood for Damien Chazelle! ❤️
I'm so jealous of him. That's a complement.
Epic Film!😍😘
La La Land made Jimmy happy and positive? I was completely wrecked by the ending lol. Hell, I was watching an interview with Emma Stone and she said she saw the movie 9 times: and 3 of those times she broke down crying after.
This guy is incredible
he's my new inspiration
in the year 2014 , after i watched whiplash , i knew this guy would become famous for how good he's at directing movies.
he's a genius.
It makes you think doesn't it. There are terrible movies being made with massive budgets but this guy managed to make an amazing film like Whiplash for just $3.3m. To put that into context, the CGI needed just to remove Henry Cavill's mustache in Justice League cost around $25m.
As a film student I admire the heck out of him. Like...I wanna be making a film THIS amazing when im 32. And im already 23 so I need to step it up lol
I will watch every movie he ever makes. Whiplash gave me goose bumps. La La Land I cried after a decade. First man gave me wonder and perspective.
he is my idol
Aww he is really cute ❤❤
LOve him
Brings Damien Chazelle on and instantly starts talking about himself. LMAO gotta love Jimmy.
Wow! Great director. Made an Amazing movies. and...he's handsome too. 😁
His movie had better rake in loads of Oscars! I'm gonna see it for the sixth time next week.
He's so cute ♥♥♥ Awww...
That guy is a MASTER
great man. chazelle
Damien & Justin Hurwitz blew me away w/ Whiplash, and managed to do it again w/ this film! I wanna see these guys become the next Spielberg & Williams
The movie made him believe in love? Did he watch till the end?
Doesn't mean there wasn't true love in the movie. I think you missed the point... You can't get everything you want in life. Sebastian and Mia truly loved each other but in the end they got the amazing careers they wanted. You can't have everything.
The end is the love though. Otherwise, they wouldn't stared and smiled at each other.
bboyuploads the end wasn't love. It was happiness and content. The love was gone right when Seb finished his song, but they were more than happy and ecstatic for each other seeing that they both got to accomplish what they wanted.
They still love each other, thats why he played the song and they smiled at each other at the end
Nguyen Dung it was five years. Five years of dedicating their time to what they wanted to make. Five years of no contact. There was no love after the song. Again the musical number, yes, was about the love and the life they would've had. But when it's done they realized they could not have that anymore . It was their "la la land" and what's done is done. All they can do now is be happy for each other...And they showed.
loveeee you ♡
Damien has a beautiful vision
Hope to see him exploring other genres
He's doing a movie about Neil Armstrong that comes out next year so something darker this time.
He talked a lot, but I loved that he talked a lot. He had passion and everything when he talked.
i think i got myself a new idol
Ok I definitely convinced I need to see it
Taylor Ellis it is great I think you will really like it
This man is a genius
