- BMX has changed so much over the years and some would argue for the better and some for the worse so today we are going to have a new school BMX rider battle an old school BMX rider and see if Matty Cranmer can learn some BMX tricks from the 80's!

So stoked to be part of this vid while teaching Matty (and Will) some old school flatland. 🤘
I clicked, not knowing what to expect but that was awesome! Being born in 84' I grew up with the early mid school into the new school. Good times
That was awesome, fish! I totally relate to what you said about seeing tricks in motion like once or twice and trying to recreate from memory, so different today! Remember how to explanations and pics in magazines, crazy hard to figure out. I used to try some of these tricks but never really got them figured out, still fun though! This was a ton of fun to watch!
Super cool stuff dude.
Hey what bars are you riding? Love those knee savers.. Cant really find them these days
Awsome riding I miss this type of riding so much I'm 53 and could watch this for hours
as a 54 year old this makes me smile a lot. I remember learning these tricks a lifetime ago. thanks man
Decades and hang 5 to whip lash took me years, but wish I could find that happiness when you land it again. Some people truly don’t understand how great it feels. Who has a spare rbj1 himko
I'm almost 53 and this is one of my favorite videos! I miss the 80's. We had so much fun.
so amped to see you were in the video!!!!
I'm 48 and wasn't successful doing many tricks but also feel the same way 🤘
This was so awesome to watch fish is my dad and I grew up watching him do tricks and going to shows with him. I'm still amazed on how awesome he is he makes it look so easy
Yo, Children! I love you! ❤
Love seeing your dads still riding and being Rad!
I'm 51 riding with young dudes. I sometimes say rollbacks. The term fakie was only said when it was done in the air to a rollback. Fish is dope. Matty is a natural. He learns or comes so close for never having done new tricks. Brakes on everything is fun. I've ridden brakeless before and quickly get bored. Well done fellas.👏
Love hearing Scotty laughing - shows he has really found a way to continue to enjoy BMX
Reading the comments, I'm amazed by how many old school riders watch this channel. I thought I was the only one.
This is one of my favorite videos.
Growing up in the 80's we learned tricks from BMX magazines that had "How To" articles which had step by step photos and small explanations. It was still difficult for us because there was still a lot of figuring out how to do them through photos.
And don’t forget playing and rewinding tapes so much they stretched and didn’t play properly.
@@granthenderson2318 we had an edited beta max tape of RAD that just had the BMX scenes on loop.
NOW this i connect with. Born 71 grew up through the 80s with everything it had to offer PLUS the awesome 70s..I wish you guys would do this content far more than just the same ole same street riding. I enjoy it all..BUT...this is far more entertaining..
I agree
I’m 43 and remember when RAD came out and seeing most of the tricks for the first time, then going outside to try some of those tricks on my bike. I was like Matt… this is impossible!
It just made me respect those guys even more.
Love hearing that when guys from your time say they loved Rad! ❤
This is one of my favorite videos y’all have done
I really like that guy. Probably one of the best episodes in a while for me!!!
That was awesome. I rode BMX during the 80s. Always wondered how they did allot of the flat ground. Blows my mind
This is so cool to see! There are so many different disciplines within this sport, it's incredible to see. Seeing Matty not even able to understand how some of the tricks were done really puts it into perspective how hard they are.
Yo Fish! This is Trask from Seattle. Spruties friend! It is so awesome to see you on this channel and representing the NW and old school in a big way.
That ending though..I Felt the Rad FlashBack..😂
😂right and they weren’t far off ❤
This is one of my favorite videos on the channel. Fish is awesome!
Seriously, flatland videos are some of my favorite videos on this channel. They just make me happy. It's so different and super impressive, and it's fun to watch people learn the tricks.
This goes to show that just because tricks are old, it doesn't mean they should be dismissed. The 360 jump is almost 50 years old. The backflip is almost 40. The hang five is almost 40. Those tricks are ancient but they will always be good tricks.
Such an awesome video! Fish's old school Haro Master, Curb Dogs shirt, and all the scuff tricks brought me right back to the 80s. And he was so right - it was impossible to learn most of these tricks because all we had were magazine layouts. No videos. Once I saw Rad, my riding progressed a million times faster than before!
I'd love to see Matty setup a flatland bike and practice some of the tricks. I think he'd be really good at it with practice and proper equipment.
I think your right. Although these tricks aren't "Easy" it's especially hard on a newschool park/street bike.
The bikes are just different.
Fish's bike isn't flatland specific either, it is a general freestyle bike. All the tricks fish is doing were developed long before flatland specific bikes became a thing.
Shouldn't coulda woulda.
I can't help but think how fun these old school challenges would have been when Scott could still ride. His control was next level.
The last part 😅best ever! Took me back to the day we filmed the opening credits! Love seeing Matty trying the old school tricks from our day and he kept smiling ❤
Its F#@king amazing to see flatland on the channel
That was just old school cool all the way! Fish is an awesome rider. Matty can get those tricks nailed for sure. He's got this! That was one of the best videos you've done Scotty. Great seeing Will getting back into things again.
This was such an entertaining video, love watching old school vs new
Another great vid! Love bringing back the old skool! RAD is one of the greatest movies ever made!
Rad waa one of my favorite movies as a young teenager! We all had the Haro kneesaver bars, hand brakes and oddesey giro's and tried to master all those tricks. We used to ride from almost sun up till after sundown and scars and broken bones along the way lol. I love how street riding has evolved. I'm old school, no brakes is crazy to me because a lot of flatland tricks, you need brakes for. Really cool to see the old and new school appreciating and learning from each other! Fish is a living legend. Brings back lots of great memories watching this!
At least once a month of old vs new videos please!! So cool seeing these types of old tricks.
We need a bike check on the old school guy
Haro Freestyler. That was the holy grail of my childhood.
haro freestyler!! everyone over 30 can see that lol ooh i wished i had one
Actually it’s a reissue of the Haro Master Freestyler with all the new school stuff and slight change in geometry from our day, I have several from 85 87 and 2019 and new one is made for todays flatland and rolling tricks.
That Curb Dogs shirt 😎🤙
As a "former" old school BMX'er I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Fish is really friggin good! I hung out with some "almost" pros and from what I've seen in this video, he's really good. Was waiting for a decade or cherry picker. Saw him almost do a G turn which I'm sure he can do he just missed it because he was messing around. Still got good balance and he's gotta be in his early 50's.
Great video guys.
Never understood why the kids today have such low seat posts. We used to match the front of the seat to the handle bar so you could grip both with 1 hand. It was called getting them "dialed in" lol. Or that's what we used to say. We were just lame Canadian kids tryin to be California kids. lol. Skateboarding came after.
This video brought back loads of good memories. Thanks fellas! Good freestyling too. 🤙💪🫡
The low seat is for tailwhips and big hops. They slam seats in racing too, aswell as the stand over being extremely low, to give space for your butt to get really low.
Just got back into BMX after 25+ years. Built two bikes and trying to relearn flatland all over again. Thanks for this video, brings back some old tricks and good times I remember back in the day.
Awesome video! Thanks for the throwback that was epic watching Matty go for it. He did so well for being fresh at flatland tricks. Hope to see more.
Such an awesome video man. I was born in the 80's and I myself was also trying to learn how those types of tricks were done and grew up trying some. And hard determination allowed me to learn some of them. Blessings for old school BMX🎉🙏🏽
Flatland BMX here for 25 years now. Best parts of my life.
This was one of my favorite videos of your guys for a while, think this is what the entire culture of bmx needs again, it’s got far too out of hand with sponsorships and rivalries getting in the way and people seem to forget where it came from and forgot about just riding for the pure love of all things two wheels, fish is an actual legend, would definitely be cool to try to include him in some future videos if you’re able to, maybe a bike check and compare some modern geometry to old school geo and see how the new replicas of old school frames compare to genuine 🔥
i love infinity rolls. i have done them for decades. this summer i did a video where i did infinty rolls. but i do 180 into them. or peg manuals into them but then i do one handed and seat grab versions of the infinty roll. and i do barspin in and barspin out of infinity rolls. i am over 50 and i still do them. the best one i did this summer was barspin to 180 into infinity roll then i did the seat grab and one hander in my infinity roll to barspin out. on video on a basketball court. it was in one of my bmx videos this summer. i love that trick great video guys.
The style of handle bars and height means everything in flatland... I think its time for Matty to have a old school bike...
what an epic video thank you scotty Matty and fish
I love watching the tricks coming out of the 80s and 90s bmx books
Super RAD video Scotty!!! Love it. Reminds me of the 80s when I had my lavender Hutch Trickstar.
This certainly brought back memories
I'm an 80s kid and loved watching this!
Best outro ever!! Y’all could do that outro for every vid and I would love it
That Haro frame is awesome, would love a full bike check.
It’s a 2016 reissue one of the Haro Master Freestyler with old school look but all the new school goodie’s
Yoooo. Call Spenser right now! The steam roller!! Him and matty just trying to perfect the steam roller . Fire !🔥
I didn't watch much on TV or videos... but I remember seeing still pics in magazines of tricks. That guy was amazing, I enjoyed watching old school flatland. Thank you.
Mongoose should get Matty a flat-land specific bike. Would be cool for Matty to practice a couple tricks for a week or so, then come back and do this video again with the guest back.
They did build one there’s a video of him doing a decade look it up
That was fantastic to see some real freestyle flatland tricks as that's where bmx started for most other than track racing, the bikes where set up totally different and the dedication to practicing balance to gain a trick was the point as your feet didn't hit the floor the same as nowadays where you fly out of ramps or off rails or obstacles the rules still apply, the trick performed must be fluid and stylish thank for a trip down memory lane
Is there a more versatile rider than Matty? He can ride everything, street, bowl, crazy tricks, park, flatland, nuts rider.
I used to cut up bmx magazines and plaster my bedroom walls with all the pictures, I specifically remember one of Fish, I'm pretty sure it was a redline ad where he was doing some flat trick on a pier in San Francisco wearing a really goofy jester hat. It's wild to think about, he would've been in his early 20's when i clipped that ad out. Good to see he's doing so good and still riding, i love that sh!t.
Yeah, that a Redline ad shot in Seattle on the waterfront. I remember the fisheye lens that the photographer used was so expensive, he rented it. It was a little scary, because he was right in front of me while I was in the trick and I didn't want to hit that lens.
This took me back to when I use to ride flatland. Great seeing someone my age still riding like it's back in the 80's doing the old skool tricks with ease.
More of this please
The OG’s tabletop’d so the youngins could bike flip backflip. Stay rad Scotty!
i feel ya. i did my first feeble grind on a bench before i ever saw one on video. i seen a photo of a feeble in a magazine. i was pretty good back the. and i sat my bike up on the ledge. thought about it. did stalls first. hopped and stalled. then learned grinds. we had to learn tricks before we seen them done. by seeing a photo or a sequence of photos in a magazine. i am over 50 now and i still link tailwhips into combos in my videos.
so many older folks in the comments, we used to ride a bit of flatland in winter when nothing else was available. Would love to see Matt try more surfers then the grip ride.
I feel so lucky that Fish was basically a second dad to me growing up; he's so rad!
I'm so happy that you've become part of my family and that I get to be part of yours. Love you guys. ❤
That was awesome to watch old school stuff on the channel. And Matt just got to keep practicing I'm confident he can get it❤❤😂✌️
I had a flashback to the game of bike between scotty and Matty when Scott asked if he can complain more during smoothie!! 19:06
I remember put photos together to make a flip book to see how to tail whip looks in motion. 80s baby!
Great video mate. Really enjoyed this one. Even seeing the knee saver bars, and those brake perches etc. So good. Takes me back.
This was a good one, love it!😄👍👍
Old school Bmx is the best. Awesome video guys. It would be awesome to see Fish back in a video soon!
Rad was life when I was a kid! It was a race to the video rental store on Friday night to try to get the one copy they had! 😂
Way to go Matt! That balance move made my day!
That Haro frame looks just like a Torker bike. Very cool video.
Cause Torker was the designer that made the prototype bike’s for Bob Haro before he got them made in Taiwan due to cost.
Serious Talent. I'm pre Peg Old School. SanBernaghetto in 83, we drained the bowls of A skatepark that had the offices and concessions burn down. Cruisin Baseline Hwy on A Schwinn Predator. ACS Z rims, 3pc Redline Flight Crank, and saving up for some double sided bullseye hubs.
that was sick!! Glad to see Matty defeated for once, solid video.
Matty had some fish sauce in that smoothie😂
These tricks take sooooo much practice
I need to know who that old school guy is i really like the dude 🔥
This made my day i needed it alot tbh
I want more Fish. He is badass.
In the 80s I had a Huffy banana seat bike. I really wanted a BMX freestyle bike.
My brother had a Huffy BMX bike (not freestyle), so I just did what I could on his. I destroyed his rear rim learning bunny hops, trying to go up a curb; MAN was my dad pissed LOL. The surfer was one of my faves to do, along with handlebar stand. Going down this hill near our house. Surfer to handlebar stand back to surfer back to sitting. Terrifying every time, but also utterly exhilarating!!! .... NO CHANCE I would attempt that these days, at 53 yrs old LOL
Ah, the banana seat. Those were the days! 😁
Never to old I’m 56 and got back on my bike and I am having so much fun relearning all the tricks and halfpipe airs. Start slow it will keep you young! Trust me ❤
Lol awesome video love watching Matty try new old school tricks amazing talent everyone
Im 40 grew up on RAD and BMX Bandits 💯❤️🇦🇺🤙
mad respect for the core strength and balance of fish, these tricks are wild!!
As a 41 yr old BMX rider, I feel only pride in this situation.... Old-school will always be better because we invented the scene. 😁🖤
Best 22 minutes ever. Loved it
Fish it was so cool to see somone as stoked as i was when i went to see Rad when it came out .. as you said it was almost mind blowing seeing all the tricks in motion .. i raced BMX back then on a Dirrect Link and Free Agent but had a GT and Haro for ramps and ground work .. ill admit though i was way better racer and on the ramps and junos then i was on the ground .. Thanks for bringing back some great memories of a time in my life that i definitely enjoyed the most .. at 54 now and with a beat body from years of racing bmx and motocross i stick to a mountain bike with some suspension lol and it doesnt usually get more than 4/6 ft off the ground these days .. hell i used to bunny hop almost that high back in the day haha 🤟😎
Edit.. @fishonabike Fish, do you have a channel I would definitely enjoy watching more of you riding
I saw RAD in the theater by myself a couple years ago for the anniversary one night airing.
excellent work matty. you're still a legendary rider.
thanks for sharing sir scotty.
outtro made me laugh so hard 😂
Its funny the def gens. Im mid school for sure. Growing up in the 90s. Best of both worlds. Its funny how high seats are with old school and low on new.
Love you scotty you inspire and motivate me to get out on my MTB everyday
Awesome, awesome video, love the content and commitment.suoer skills.👍
Can't wait to see the Matty Builds a Flatland Bike and Learns Yoga series.
Old guy here. I really loved that video. I'm still bewildered by flatland though.
Old school is still 100% untouchable! GenX rules!!!
So awesome to see!
That Time Machine tho, most call that a Lung Spin.
A Time Machine is basically that, but now your off hand is holding the front peg. So one hand on the bars and one hand on the front peg.
Keep it up Matty. 🙌
Great channel, you guys are the bomb
Perfect ending
Really great! 👍
A bike comparison would be interesting.
"Old skool New skool Need 2 Learn Doe/ I Burn Baby Burn like Disco inferno/ burn slow like Blunts with yayo"
Notorious B.i.g.
God thank you! Awesome video! I felt like I could ride again.
Yup growing up in the 80’s and 90’s we had to teach ourselves most things and had to remember so much information. I wish I was more exposed to freestyle BMX as a kid. Riding street was pretty much jumping in and out ditches, riding wheelies and sliding gravel lol.
Great outro!! 😂
Oh Matty, I wanna see Garrett Reynolds do a time machine.
Love the old skool, I grew up with BMX bandits and the film Rad ( I think that's the name)
I love to see some flatland. One day i will be able to do a steamroller.
Wide awake nightmare and crusty demons is something I wish I could watch for the first time again.
