    Brian, being 6 feet tall, I understand your frustration of having the roof too close to the head. You could help this (and improve the comfort of your lower back) if you recline the backrest position to about 25 deg from vertical. Just look at the shape of the most comfortable ergonomic seating ever (IMHO) designed; the Frankfurt airport chairs profile (images are available on the web). Why do you need to be so upright "facing forward"? If a cat or a wild animal jumps in front of the hood it's too late for it anyway! Seeing it clearly won't save it. One should focus attention just a little further in front of the car for save, enjoyable and pain free driving!

      Interesting. I test drove a small battery Ariya (US Evolve trim) and even the sport mode wasn't terribly exciting. It's attractive though. Love the back end compared to other crossovers and didn't feel too small inside. It wasn't bad overall but it's also over 67K in my area with ridiculous markup over MSRP. The interior has nothing on Mazda's. I agree with him about the seats. That was my #1 complaint. Heated seat BUTTON please, NOT in the infotainment. The Evolve didn't have a power lift gate but had heated seats and steering wheel. Bizarre choice. I was disappointed in the Japanese Lantern. The plastic looked cheap and not having a choice of light color is a missed opportunity.

    A very interesting review.
    I nearly bought one of these at a slightly higher spec than reviewed here. I cancelled the order early in January because I had ordered in July 2022 and delivery was moved back from March 2023 to - only possibly - June 2023. I also got cold feet about pure EV when I saw the collapse of the UK public charging network under high demand over Christmas 2022. Pure EV, even with my own at home renewable lec fill up, does not seem quite ready for prime time in the UK. I have instead bought a Mazda CX60 PHEV.
    The Ariya does continue the emerging trend that Japanese and other Asian cars are providing sufficient luxury and handling to question why you would spend the money on an Audi/BMW/Mercedes equivalent at a €20-30k premium. They also show a much better use of EV interior space and design than the big three German leaders. Brian bemoans the rubbish capacitive bits of UI in the Ariya, as do I, but there is a lot less of it than in the German alternatives. Unlike the German alternatives you do not feel as if you are in a car designed for the petrol past but just about adapted for the lec future; you feel as if they have rethought it all, and Nissan have form here over the last decade. When I looked at an Audi EV which might have replaced my gorgeous petrol RS3 I got the impression that they were struggling with transition from fossil fuel to lec, a bit like the move from horse and carriage to horseless carriage. The E Tron I looked at had the wow that it was horseless, but it was still a carriage.
    No need to go on about the Mazda, but it has even less - in fact none - of the capacitive nonsense, has even more luxury and is a bit faster. Pace Thomas and possibly Brian, it also handles better than the Ariya.
    Rather than rehash a debate which has occurred elsewhere here on Autogefuhl, it might be worth considering, as I am at the moment, what second (third or otherwise extra) car you might have to satisfy others in the family if you are lucky enough to be in that position. At the moment my picks are either a Mini EV or a Mazda MX 30. I love what BMW have done with Mini overall and Mini EVs in particular. The minis handle like a dream, have a distinctive and usable UI/UX with the especially wonderful round Mini touch screen, and have not fallen for the huge battery/range anxiety nonsense that everyone else has. The Mazda also does “less is more” with a really clever bit of packaging which makes the MX30 more practical and an easier family sell than the Mini. It is also a sufficiently entertaining alternative to drive as the Mini, but not equal. Just a little more power in the Mazda would push it ahead of the Mini in this context considering greater practicality, and maybe the Mazda MX30 R EV has done that. Thomas, Brian, and Team please do not leave us in suspense for too long waiting for a Mini EV versus an MX30 EV/R EV comparison.
    As ever a great Ariya review.

    I appreciate the efficiency numbers but I think it is wrong to simply calculate the range based on this and the battery capacity. We know all car makers have a buffer of battery capacity that drivers can not access, and this lowers the total range. I would better appreciate genuinely testing the range by running from 100% to empty or as near as empty as the car lets you.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  Před rokem +1

      That’s why we take the net figures and not the gross figures if available. Sometimes it is hard to say which is the real net figure because some manufacturers hide it, some dont. However you always get a result that is still representing the real-world range, its not that you would score a completely different result, just some couple percent +/-

    • @kurtpenner2362
      @kurtpenner2362 Před rokem

      @@autogefuehl The fact that the net figures are hidden is precisely the issue. CZcams reviewers in the US for example have found Tesla EVs to consistently return about 85% of their advertised range, in ideal conditions. This is not just some couple of percent. Consumers want to know this real info.

    I drove one of these in my time of testing out which car would be the new electric family car. The Ariya was the most boring of anything that my wife and I drove. It is perfectly competent and does everything that you ask of it.
    However, we found too many faults and things that we didn’t like.
    The interior is filled with cheap plastic. The Kumoto (I’ve forgotten the name) design details look pretty cheap, with much of it executed in plastic.
    There is a weird oscillating when we drove our test model. Our heads were constantly bouncing and it wasn’t due to the pavement as we tried it on all kinds of surfaces. The vehicle was also delivered with electrical faults and we had to delay our test drive by 4 days.
    The bronze trim (and everything else) looks cheaper and worse in real life. All of it looks good in the photos and videos but not in the real world.
    This was the only car, once we drove it, we never spoke of again. Again, competent but uninspiring.
    We drove EV6s, Mustang Mach E, Jaguar i-Pace and ended up with with Certified Pre Owned Tesla Model X. We didn’t even have Tesla on our radar but got a great deal, with warranty, for about 10k more than the fully equipped Ariya. It was a better choice for us.

    The review is fantastic. Please keep doing these real world consumption test, it's much more helpful than WLTP. If possible, you can also do a sheet for future buyers that contains all the range test data, like temperature, speed, etc. However, I hate EVs thanks to hypocritical and totalitarian EU politicians and climat communists that travel with private jet and go vacation with yacht. If they didn't try to take away our rights, I may consider EVs, but now never, it's a statement.

    A lack of a frunk is due to packaging laziness and lack of vertical integration, as there are lots of parts that can't be optimised into a small space. Tesla, Polestar, Rivian, Ford and many others can do it, why can't Nissan? Now dirty charging cables have to take up space in the boot underneath everything you're transporting. I built my own frunk out of MDF for my Nissan Leaf 2011 model and it made a big difference for extension leads and charging cables. I wouldn't buy an new EV without a frunk.

    And it got a drag coefficient of 0.3 + - Basically the worst in class.
    And no.. they haven't learned.. they have dropped one pedal driving.
    But i looks good.

    My EV6 is much better equipped and drives wonderfully well. The seats are very comfortable and adjust electrically. Also it has no need for a "bulbous" front or rear, and it has a frunk, albeit a small one. The boot on my EV6 is also bigger than the Ariya's.

      Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
      You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at czcams.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/video.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
      A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: czcams.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/video.html
      And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: czcams.com/video/6vXePQi_MAk/video.html
      New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: czcams.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/video.html
      More and more natural materials are rising: czcams.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/video.html
      Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: czcams.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/video.html
      For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: czcams.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/video.html
      Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
      In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse?
      We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
