    I have been working with wood since 1975. I am a self-taught artist. Growing tired of the everyday grind and feeling very passionate about the possibilities of woodworking I struck out on my own and started Knapp Studios in 1988. My greatest focus is on kaleidoscopes. That is how my wife, Shelley and I have been making a living since 1989. I also enjoy working in glass,metal and acrylic. Kaleidoscopes are a natural fit for me because they are multimedia and combine many different skills that I enjoy doing. For me -- to do is to be. :)

    Mom, I need 3-5 gal buckets, a toaster oven, digital calipers, a planer, a joiner, a router, a router table, a drill press, a drill press mill table, a hand sander, and a bench grinder with a buffing wheel, so I can make a sling shot ;)

    When drilling into plastics or brass, use a blunt drill bit, it wont have as much chance to grab on the plastic or brass and it should prvent it from pulling up and ripping apart your work or fingers. Very nicely made mate, those looks stunning. Well done mate well done indeed

    I agree with shooter, I flattened the cutting edge of the drill bit just a little so you have to make it cut.

    For texturing the slick out of it, I bet you could find some textured surface to whack into it with a mallet, like knurling on a tool handle. That'd probably be too coarse, so maybe a sintered bronze gasoline filter, or maybe steel wool? Something fine. Tapping that all over the areas you want to texture, might work for a good grip?

    Great videos and slingshot building tutorials, thanks!
    Just curious, but why don't you just use some flat wood bits to drill the HDPE so it won't climb the drill bit?

  • @fx1c333
    @fx1c333 Před 4 lety

    put a drill clamp or a wood tube / sleeve over the drill bit. Then you can drill to the depth you need and drilling this way will make sure the plastic won't climb up the drill

    Super interesting Randy, I enjoyed this series of videos very much! Thank you for taking the time to film and share all the work that went into these. Your name sounds very familiar, you don't happen to be a member of bushcraftusa.com do you? A thread on slingshots was recently started there that has got me back interested in them. I feel like a kid again. LOL
    I also do some wood turning so maybe I've heard of you in the wood turners circles.

    one thing ive wanted to try using for extra grip on hdpe knife handles is checkering tools like whats used to give gun stocks their grip and fancy pattern. not sure if their called checkering tools but if you google that youll find em.

    just grind a negative rake on the cut edge of the drill that stops it climbing.

    I’m getting chatter on the board when I run it through the planer. The planer is a small portable Porter Cable. Some times pieces of plastic can wedge themselves between blade and mounting surface. Do you think a larger planer, with thicker blades would take care of this problem?

    Yeah, suck it into bag or so, but will iy be CLEAN enough to use again ?

  • @doubledarefan
    @doubledarefan Před 8 lety

    Do you remelt the swarf? It would probably make a micro-version of the swirly patterns you usually get. How about the offcuts? Remelt? Or save for projects?
    Have you thought of packing the messed-up holes with molten HDPE? Seems like a shot at a second chance.
    CZcams user Clickspring has a vid on modifying drill bits for drilling brass. Would probably work the same for HDPE. Vid is called Spare Parts #7
    The blue/silver and red/milk slabs probably did not turn out well because of release agent or contaminants on the plastic.

    • @RandyKnappWood
      @RandyKnappWood  Před 8 lety

      +Double Dare Fan Yes the off cuts make neat looking slabs. I do not like to remelt them too many times as I feel it degrades with each melt. Just my opinion. The swarf is too much of a pain to remelt and not worth the effort for me. The process is a bit of alchemy have fun . :)

    The silver buckets and coffee containers are food grade and are not made from petroleum but soybean oil. They are not recyclable. I have 55 gallon barrels that had olives in them and they also can not be remelted. Begs the question as to why milk and water jugs can be used and I can't answer that. Hmm.
