Some teenage kid who moves across the country to somewhere in the North East New Hampshire, Maine or somewhere in that region with a single parent or its 2 siblings that have parents that go away for the week and leave the kids at home 🤣🤣
As a kid in the early 90s, this was the greatest thing in the world: to have Nickelodeon giving you a kid friendly version of Tales From The Crypt ( which I watched too lol). I saw every single episode, recorded a lot of them on VHS and couldn't wait for Saturday nights! Once it reached rotation, I would come home from school and run to my TV and see daily episodes for a little while. Some of the best episodes ever were The Tale of: Deadman's Float, Silent Servant, Jake and the Leprechaun, Whispering Walls, Night Shift, Dark Music, Twisted Claw, Ghastly Grinner, Bookish Babysitter and Dangerous Soup. All had legitimate elements of horror

Don't know about you Micheal. But I wouldn't call AYAOTD A Kid Friendly Version Of TFTC. With the episodes like the pool zombie episode and the hospital vampire episode showing stuff you won't see on Nickelodeon these days (With how way too safe and politically correct they are). I would more or less call it AYAOTD (Plus other shows like it like Courage The Cowardly Dog) The Real Life Version of A Lost Episode Creepypasta (That actually got aired on TV and minus all the blood and gore cliches most Lost Episode Creepypastas usually have). But what do I know?
We all did, sat. night Nick or SNick was awesome. My brother and I would play Nintendo waiting for it to begin and make jiffy pop then watch about 3 hrs. of Doug, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Pete and Pete and Are you Afraid of the Dark, with a couple lesser liked shows.
I remember my older brother used to scare my twin brother and I by saying, "I'm cold" at creepy moments. The episode that scared me the most was the one with kids who find out that not only are aliens living in their building, but that one of them was an alien herself. My mom used to even put a green lightbulb in when we would watch Snick. Good stuff. 🌵👽
Thirty years later and I still ADORE the opening, especially the empty swings and the attic with that perfect theme! It fights with the Goosebumps opening for the top spot in my heart;) I need to binge-watch...besides The Storyteller, there's Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids! I wonder if the movie was anything like 'Cry Baby Lane'...
Some of these episodes still haunt me to this day, and I’m a horror fanatic who does not scare easily. They made it clear that kids could die in this world.

A big reason the show has held up as well as it has is that they treated their audience with respect and thought they could handle serious subjects, which included kids dying. "The Shiny Red Bicycle", for example, not only opens with a kid dying, but then spends the whole episode exploring survivor's guilt and how grief is a hard thing to get over, no matter how many times other people tell you to. Very heavy stuff for a supposed kid's show.

Regarding the current revival series, it's a considerably different beast from the original show as instead of the episodic anthology format, it's a seasonal anthology where each season has had a different "chapter" so to speak of the Midnight Society dealing with a supernatural threat. If the original series was a kid-friendly "Twilight Zone", the revival series is a kid-friend "American Horror Story." Yet it's very well made, clearly done by fans of the original show (there are tons of references to the original series, especially "Curse of the Shadows" which brings back a beloved character from the original show) and much like the original series, they are going for legit scares. And I like the different Midnight Society each season, because it makes sense they'd be all over the country like some kind of supernatural Fight Club.
the bookish babysitter, the tale of the quick silver, the frozen ghost, the super specs and the water zombie sea captain were the ones that scared me most as a kid
I enjoyed this show, even if it was cheesy. My fav stories were the evil music in the basement, the zombie monster in the pool, the mirror that stole is ur youth, and the leprechaun play.
As a kid from Montreal who was addicted and traumatized by this show, the day I realized it was filmed in my hometown sent a cold chill down my spine. Fantastic video!
being a canadian who spent the 90's as a tween/teen (i was 12 in april of 1990) i loved this show -- and of course Goosebumps ... and i was one of those kids who loved the concept of the midnight society and would come up with creative backstories for the kids who sat around the fire each week ... on a side note i wanna say great informative video Minty -- good job -- apart from AYAOTD? being a canadian production i had no idea about the other stuff you covered in this video ... thanks for that and doing what you do ... cheers
The Zeebo the clown episode was filmed at La Ronde in Montreal. I remember when they closed down the area that contained the haunted house, super manege and the boomerang for 2 weeknights for filming.
I was 7 when it first launched in 92 on YTV. Watched it religiously throughout my entire childhood. It was a great show. Halloween time had some great episodes and especially the YTV marathons where you could call in and win prizes.
Goosebumps and Are You Agraid of the Dark were both fantastic pre-teen horror TV shows both had certain episodes that I thought were spooky or scary at a younger age... Great upload
There was once a fan theory that the kids around the campfire were actually dead, and that Gary was sort of like a guide leading them into the afterlife, with the campfire itself being a purgatory, thus explaining why they had different kids in the midnight society every once in a while.
Isn't that *every* fan theory, though? That, or the MC is in a coma and the series is all in their imagination, lol. I've heard so many variations of the "they were all dead/in purgatory/in a coma the whole time" theory that I've lost count. It just skips around from fandom to fandom, the only thing changing being the details, and I always get a little kick out of seeing it pop up again.

I still like the one about Kevin's dad from Home Alone being a mafia boss, because you never hear on screen what he does for a living, and yet he can afford the big house and trips to Paris for his large family. Looked at me best friend a couple weeks ago after watching the new series and said “How did we never do this as kids?” I grew up with woods in my back yard, perfect clearing for something like this. We totally could’ve pulled it off lol. Honestly think my mom would’ve been ok with it too lol.

@@nsasupporter7557 As explained in the video, AYAOTD had 5 seasons originally from 1992-1996, which got them to the 65 episodes necessary for syndication. But when they started selling the for syndication rights a couple years later, they decided to make a couple more seasons worth of episodes to make the syndication package more appealing. That's why the 2 later seasons from 1999-2000 exist. And now we of course have the ongoing revival that is 3 seasons and counting (and Nick seems like they want to make it an annual event, so expect more).
Man I love this show still today! This was a staple in my house growing up! And now still at 34 I go back and love watching episodes lol...there’s a CZcams channel with every episode for free called “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Of course lol but it’s great! But u forgot to mention the great comedian Bobcat Gothwaite appeared in an episode! And the new show on Netflix called the “Midnight Club” by Mike Flanagan who is a fantastic horror genius, got his inspiration from this show. And it is an updated more surreal version..so definitely recommend it, it was great! 👍 loved the video Minty
Every Saturday night my parents and I would turn off the lights in the living room, turn the TV to SNICK, and watch Are You Afraid of the Dark because they enjoyed it, too. Great memories!
I have been binge watching your back catalogue these last few weeks, and even though ive been watching your channel for a couple of years, on and off, I'm STILL nowhere near watching them all. No to be a kiss arse, but your channel is the only one i can never get bored watching! I am a fellow cinephile though, haha! I always thought Minty was a goofball when I first saw his vids years ago but his quirky personality grew on me. Now he's inspired me in creating my own youtube video series.

What a great video! I used to be so scared of Are You Afraid of the Dark when I was a kid. Now I look back on it with so much fondness and nostalgia. It was so interesting to find out all these facts about one of my childhood shows. Thanks Minty!
This was one of my favorite shows on the original SNICK lineup. Most terrifying episodes for my money are "The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner" (i.e. the one with the blue-and-yellow jester dude. Side note, I was less afraid of the clown in "Laughing In The Dark" than I was/am of that damned creepy-ass jester) and one that I forget the title of, but it's about a girl who moves into a new house? and her friend goes missing, and it turns out she's trapped inside a dollhouse next door and is slowly turning into a porcelain doll. (That one might actually be my favorite episode though) There's also one that I was less scared by, but that has always stuck with me, called "The Tale Of The Hungry Hounds". "I have to feed the hoooouuuunds!" (also I had a huge crush on Gary when I was like 13 lol)
I CANT believe on his list he didn't include that this series inspired M Night Shaymalan to write The Sixth Sense. Huge amazing fact. Shoulda made the list Minty!
As someone who doesn't get easily scared today, I remember some of these scared me so bad when I first watched them back then that my parents started considering not letting me watch it. As such, today whenever I rewatch them, I try to figure out how they ever scared me, lol. My two all time favorite episodes are The Tale of the Lonely Ghost and The Tale of the Doll Maker. On another note, there actually was an animated series of Tales From The Crypt that was aimed at kids at one point. I don't remember what channel it was on, but it did exist.

this show had some legit scary episodes. Some of which had very dark endings. I think that shaped my love of horror as a child. That and my folks let me watch the original IT when I was 4 😂 (Edit: the whole SNICK Saturday night lineup on Nickelodeon was absolute 🔥 Roundhouse, Ren & Stimpy, All That, Pete & Pete, ect. We were spoiled lol )
There was a rumor floating that the kids were really dead and there spirits couldn’t pass on till their story was worthy. Also at the time of the show my Son asked if they could do a Midnight Society in the yard. His friends were surprised that I allowed him to have a fire in the fire ring. He had the skills and I was at my office desk that overlooked the boys. So there was no danger but years later when these kids were in their upper 20’s they all came back to do it as adults. This time I was invited.
I watch your videos alot... when I picked up my fone this morning I looked u up and you had just put out this same morning... a video on one of my all time favorite kid shows from my youth.... that's so awesome.... keep going minty... we are always watching!

I love these show growing up as a kid. It's so much better then Gossbumps show ever was. There endings can be gross or dumb or worst both. 🙃 I never hated any of the episodes of are you afraid of the dark. It is true that not all episodes are scary but there all good in there own right. Like the ghost boy, it's not scary but you do feel sorry for him for how he die. And when he gets his coat back he did help the ant e out by giving them back there key for there oven where there dad's stealen money was. Making them rich again in stand of going flat brouck and being homelessness. There are a lot of good episodes from these show
I love that he showed the poster for the film The Peanut Butter Solution. I believe I saw that film, and actually even got to borrow it, from either a teacher in my grade school or a teacher or counselor or whatever they are called, from my daycare when I was a kid. In later years I looked up the film, because I remembered a song that you hear when a girl's following this truck, that it was rather catchy. I had no clue it was performed by Celine Dion, and I had forgotten how catchy it really was. I remember as a kid the film often made me feel rather depressed for some reason, and when I looked at it again recently, and actually tackles quite a bit of mature subjects. The best friend in the film wants to have this peanut butter solution to grow his pubic hair, and I never rememberrd that at all from when I watched it as a kid. That moment was just plain gross.

My favorite character was Kiki. The girl with the basecap & bandana because i ALWAYS loved tomboyish girls :] I also had a bit of a crush on her too. This show had so many awesome stories and thew whole style was really wonderfully done. The choice of camera angles, lighting, music and the overall mood and atmosphere. Heck, the OPENING alone was already perfect! Always watched this show while vising my grandparents because we could not receive Nickelodeon on TV at home due to our cable network provider who did not feed it into our line. One of my favorite stories was the one with the creepy little door in the basement where a monster lived inside, asking the boy of the family who just moved into this house, to feed him humans. And the door would always open when an old radio was on and playing music.The story about the kids who ended up in a videogame, was also awesome. The creative team behind this show gave us absolute magic in the 90s. :)
I chuckle when I remember I watched this and Wishbone at the same age. Drastically different shows. Same with Hey Dude, Salute your shorts, Guts and Wild and Crazy Kids. Damn I miss being a kid. Edit: I put that list of shows BEFORE the point in the video where you mentioned other Nick shows.

"Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was one of my favourite shows growing up. I remember watching it on YTV later at night, especially on Saturdays. I would do most of my homework that morning, and got excited for nighttime when I would put on my pj's and watch the show on my Commodore 64 monitor that my dad had set up as a TV in my room. Those were good times. Looking back, I was probably too young to be watching it, but even as a very young kid, I LOVED spooky stuff. AYAotD was one of my first stepping stones (after "Goosebumps" of course) into the world of horror... and it only cemented my love for it going into adulthood. I still watch episodes in my 30's, and enjoy that truly nostalgic feeling. Stay spooky.

Goosebumps and Are You Agraid of the Dark were both fantastic pre-teen horror TV shows both had certain episodes that I thought were spooky or scary at a younger age... Great upload
There was once a fan theory that the kids around the campfire were actually dead, and that Gary was sort of like a guide leading them into the afterlife, with the campfire itself being a purgatory, thus explaining why they had different kids in the midnight society every once in a while.

Isn't that *every* fan theory, though? That, or the MC is in a coma and the series is all in their imagination, lol. I've heard so many variations of the "they were all dead/in purgatory/in a coma the whole time" theory that I've lost count. It just skips around from fandom to fandom, the only thing changing being the details, and I always get a little kick out of seeing it pop up again.
@@Spectra651 well, death is not involved in every fan theory, it's just more prominent than others. I still like the one about Kevin's dad from Home Alone being a mafia boss, because you never hear on screen what he does for a living, and yet he can afford the big house and trips to Paris for his large family. Not to mention his being slightly apprehensive when Harry asked him all of those questions disguised as a cop.

“Gary” is now a meteorologist for the Weather Network in Canada. I always remembered him more for his role in another Canadian classic, Student Bodies
Despite being a Gen-X kid, I was always amazed that all these kids were allowed to wander through the woods alone so late at night.
I think the idea was they snuck out at midnight.

Looked at me best friend a couple weeks ago after watching the new series and said “How did we never do this as kids?” I grew up with woods in my back yard, perfect clearing for something like this. We totally could’ve pulled it off lol. Honestly think my mom would’ve been ok with it too lol.
As a kid from the 90s, I used to that a lot (taking a a walk into the woods at night, that is), but alone, not with friends, cause barely even had any friends
This really takes me back, I remember watching the show with my sister when we were kids, a lot of times we would make fun of it because there were a few episodes that were really cheesy but that's exactly why we loved it

@@nsasupporter7557 As explained in the video, AYAOTD had 5 seasons originally from 1992-1996, which got them to the 65 episodes necessary for syndication. But when they started selling the for syndication rights a couple years later, they decided to make a couple more seasons worth of episodes to make the syndication package more appealing. That's why the 2 later seasons from 1999-2000 exist. And now we of course have the ongoing revival that is 3 seasons and counting (and Nick seems like they want to make it an annual event, so expect more).

Man I love this show still today! This was a staple in my house growing up! And now still at 34 I go back and love watching episodes lol...there’s a CZcams channel with every episode for free called “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Of course lol but it’s great! But u forgot to mention the great comedian Bobcat Gothwaite appeared in an episode! And the new show on Netflix called the “Midnight Club” by Mike Flanagan who is a fantastic horror genius, got his inspiration from this show. And it is an updated more surreal version..so definitely recommend it, it was great! 👍 loved the video Minty

Every Saturday night my parents and I would turn off the lights in the living room, turn the TV to SNICK, and watch Are You Afraid of the Dark because they enjoyed it, too. Great memories!

This was one of my favorite shows on the original SNICK lineup. Most terrifying episodes for my money are "The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner" (i.e. the one with the blue-and-yellow jester dude. Side note, I was less afraid of the clown in "Laughing In The Dark" than I was/am of that damned creepy-ass jester) and one that I forget the title of, but it's about a girl who moves into a new house? and her friend goes missing, and it turns out she's trapped inside a dollhouse next door and is slowly turning into a porcelain doll. (That one might actually be my favorite episode though) There's also one that I was less scared by, but that has always stuck with me, called "The Tale Of The Hungry Hounds". "I have to feed the hoooouuuunds!"
(also I had a huge crush on Gary when I was like 13 lol)

Minty hasn't done his research thoroughly enough, quite a few things are incorrect.
As someone who doesn't get easily scared today, I remember some of these scared me so bad when I first watched them back then that my parents started considering not letting me watch it. As such, today whenever I rewatch them, I try to figure out how they ever scared me, lol. My two all time favorite episodes are The Tale of the Lonely Ghost and The Tale of the Doll Maker. On another note, there actually was an animated series of Tales From The Crypt that was aimed at kids at one point. I don't remember what channel it was on, but it did exist.
I remember the Tales From The Crypt cartoon. I don't remember any episodes but I vaguely rememeber the intro. I had completely forgotten about it until reading your comment. GOnna have to go back and watch an episode or two.

this show had some legit scary episodes. Some of which had very dark endings. I think that shaped my love of horror as a child.

There was a rumor floating that the kids were really dead and there spirits couldn’t pass on till their story was worthy. Also at the time of the show my Son asked if they could do a Midnight Society in the yard. His friends were surprised that I allowed him to have a fire in the fire ring. He had the skills and I was at my office desk that overlooked the boys. So there was no danger but years later when these kids were in their upper 20’s they all came back to do it as adults. This time I was invited.

I love these show growing up as a kid. It's so much better then Gossbumps show ever was. There endings can be gross or dumb or worst both. 🙃 I never hated any of the episodes of are you afraid of the dark. It is true that not all episodes are scary but there all good in there own right. Like the ghost boy, it's not scary but you do feel sorry for him for how he die. And when he gets his coat back he did help the ant e out by giving them back there key for there oven where there dad's stealen money was. Making them rich again in stand of going flat brouck and being homelessness. There are a lot of good episodes from these show
Check out "Eerie Indiana" such a great show and insanely Under-rated. Sadly only lasted 1 season

I love that he showed the poster for the film The Peanut Butter Solution. I believe I saw that film, and actually even got to borrow it, from either a teacher in my grade school or a teacher or counselor or whatever they are called, from my daycare when I was a kid. In later years I looked up the film, because I remembered a song that you hear when a girl's following this truck, that it was rather catchy. I had no clue it was performed by Celine Dion, and I had forgotten how catchy it really was. I remember as a kid the film often made me feel rather depressed for some reason, and when I looked at it again recently, and actually tackles quite a bit of mature subjects. The best friend in the film wants to have this peanut butter solution to grow his pubic hair, and I never rememberrd that at all from when I watched it as a kid. That moment was just plain gross.

A sound stage?!? 😭 I could swear one episode gave me nightmares or a nightmare could have been used for an episode.
My favorite character was Kiki. The girl with the basecap & bandana because i ALWAYS loved tomboyish girls :] I also had a bit of a crush on her too. This show had so many awesome stories and thew whole style was really wonderfully done. The choice of camera angles, lighting, music and the overall mood and atmosphere. Heck, the OPENING alone was already perfect! Always watched this show while vising my grandparents because we could not receive Nickelodeon on TV at home due to our cable network provider who did not feed it into our line. One of my favorite stories was the one with the creepy little door in the basement where a monster lived inside, asking the boy of the family who just moved into this house, to feed him humans. And the door would always open when an old radio was on and playing music.The story about the kids who ended up in a videogame, was also awesome. The creative team behind this show gave us absolute magic in the 90s. :)

"Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was one of my favourite shows growing up. I remember watching it on YTV later at night, especially on Saturdays. I would do most of my homework that morning, and got excited for nighttime when I would put on my pj's and watch the show on my Commodore 64 monitor that my dad had set up as a TV in my room. Those were good times. Looking back, I was probably too young to be watching it, but even as a very young kid, I LOVED spooky stuff. AYAotD was one of my first stepping stones (after "Goosebumps" of course) into the world of horror... and it only cemented my love for it going into adulthood. I still watch episodes in my 30's, and enjoy that truly nostalgic feeling. Stay spooky.
