[Joe] We always get funny looks from people who see me and Alena when we are out. Perhaps it's the asian and black thing, or maybe it's also because of Alena's shaved hair. All over the world, women have shaved their heads for many cultural and ceremonial reasons, but in America it's a taboo appearance. When Akyli asked for a new haircut before her birthday, she understood that cutting her hair short does not detract from her gender nor her beauty.

I wasnt allowed to cut my hair. Or I would be homeless.
My mum freaked when I coloured it at 17 years old.
When I left home I got it all cut off. Freedom.
When you got a lot of hair and its thick too, having that weight taken out is soooooo nice!
