such a pretty fish i've always wanted one and now that I traded in my yellow tank I might pick up the smallest juvi kole tang I can find. great video btw :)
I love love the (Ko-lee) tang. I found out that's how it's pronounced. I'm not judging... Mine was super active and one of the funniest acting fishes I had. It kisses all over the aquarium walls eating algae but the prints remain if you have some growth. It is a really pretty fish and it doesn't show in most video but it looks like it's wearing an expensive pinstripe suit. very understated. When I returned mine to the lfs for a tank tear down he said he had 5 orders for a kole that week due to mine being there. I will honestly have one of these in any future tank that I build.
I was so close to getting one of these while back... Almost fell into the dwarf tang trap. When really there are none... Wish I could be a real reef keeper like you tang guys..
My Kole Tang "Elvis" is 6 years old and was the the size of a fifty cent coin when I bought him. Tangs are beautiful and require high water quality with high flow current. He loves to park in front of the Vortech and Koralia wavemakers to ride the currents. This means 15-20% partial water change weekly, and varied diet high in algae. I feed Formula One pellets and roasted unseasoned nori daily on a veggie clip. I supplement with frozen foods - mysis shrimp and spirulina enhanced brine shrimp soaked once a week in garlic extract juice and Selcon. Elvis has never had HHLD disease and a heavy algae based diet is crucial. Spectrum pellets are an awesome daily staple, but more expensive than Formula One pellets.
Being new to this hobby I watch alot of CZcams on reefing. Your videos are the best!!! I can't watch RT's beginners guide anymore. There are plenty of those on YT already. sorry I know he is ur buddy
well done vid Scott. for the money you really can't go wrong with this prolific algae eater. lol. constantly on the move for food. your fish and tank are looking good...
Thanks for this video Scott I really enjoyed it love this fish I still can't find one but when I do it will be going in my tank my lavender tang is in quarantine will be here next Wednesday my Foxface and 2 green chromis will be here Friday
Great video! I have a kolee tang and I think he is attacking my Duncan coral..I’m losing heads... im gonna start the algae sheets ... have you seen or heard of this behavior? I would appreciate your answer.
I looking to setup a saltwater tank i have a lot of room but i cant decide what size I should get im thinking that a 90 to 100 gal might work eny suggestions?
Great vid brosif.. Question, I have a 140 gal that's been running for a while, and so far I have a flame angel, fox face, hippo tang i had for 5+ years, royal grama, and firetail goby.. I would like to get couple more tangs, do you think that is possible with size of tank or no? I wanted to go with a sailfin, poderblue or naso blonde, and yellow tang.. Let me know what you think :)
Scott, I'm planning a 280 gallon tank soon, and like you, I love tangs !! I totally believe in doing a QT tank for all of my fish. Here is my question to you....I'm wanting to add all of the tangs at once to DT after it's really good and established, SO do you think a 60 gallon QT tank is big enough for 8 or so tangs at one time ?? I feel like they would be very happy in the 280 , however my concern is getting and keeping them all " happy" together and tank treated with copper for a month or more I such a smaller tank. BTW, I love all of your videos , very informative!!
That's the problem with adding 8 tangs at once, it's not practical from a QT perspective. 8 tangs in a 60 gallon QT sounds like trouble to me. When I added my last 3 zebrasomas to the tank I used my frag tanks to keep them separated until they could all go in at once. I also bought fish and had the LFS hold them. If you have an LFS that can QT your fish for you in copper that would be the essayist method. I also posted a video today on how I QT in 10 days that may help you.
I was going to say add it as well because it does act differently than most tangs. the blue is another very different one but I'm not sure about 4 tangs in a 90
I keep my tank around 77-78 deg. In my area temp ranges from -20 to 110 depending on the season. In the summer I run AC 24-7 to help keep the tank cool.
Do some lfs put copper in their water and sell you fish in the medicated water. One of my lfs sold me fish a few times and it was a yellowish color and she said they medicate their water. I dint get a chance to ask what the medication was.
I'm getting one of these tangs as there the smaller tangs BUT I dnt have room for a QT tang I don't have no corals as of yet would it be ok to just put it straight in my display tank?
Your risk is it could get ich or marine velvet, at witch point you wouldn't want to add copper medication to the tank if your planning on invertebrates. If you have a local store that QTs fish that could be a good alternative.
I had one of these fish and it got stuck in between 2 rocks and died. I didn't catch it in time because I was at work all day and it probably happened in the middle of the night. it was a really skittish fish and would jolt around aimlessly. it looked like it got the side of its tail stuck under part of the rock somehow and couldn't get out. I did some research on whether other people have ever had that problem and couldn't find anything. weird situation I guess.
+MileHighReefers thanks Scott that's what I have been using so I will buy another one I think I test to often I do it twice a week ... I've got my nitrates to 0ppm I'm so happy and I get my lavender tang tomorrow can't wait
+MileHighReefers thanks scott just wish my phone videoed it abit clearer i love the little fish glad i listened to you and got it . Its got a lot of personality not frightened of anything
They can look very purple. I actually thought it was one of the most beautiful fish I had, closer up. It has a velvety appearance and has thin pinstripes running down the side.
I'll have a look, thank you. Would you say always treat them with something? Or should I just wait and see if they actually need treating? Also, would you recommend adding the corals first and then the fish once treated? Or the other way around? I figured if I put the corals in first I could wait until any waterborne infections (like ich) have died off and then introducing fully quarantined fish slowly so they can't introduce any sickness. Last time I obviously did something wrong because I introduced a new fish (admittedly without quarantining) and it introduced ich and then when I treated the main tank it killed all the corals. So I'm trying to avoid another disaster! :/
Great video Scott! Question for you, you have a pink "tree" type coral that can be clearly seen at 4:16. I believe it could be some type of Gorgonian perhaps? Just curious as to what it is specifically. Thanks for all the informational videos!
Where did you get ur pukani from im going to get new rock for my 250 gal and i was thinking around 200 pounds of brs pukani and treat it with lanthanum chloride
I am picking one up tomorrow for my 180. Like you, I love me some tang too. I have a yellow and a sailfin. Tomorrow i am getting a kole and a powder brown. I am also thinking about a purple but i feel i 4 tang in my tan would be enough. your thoughts?
You made some great tang choices. The biggest concern I would have about getting the purple is it might fight with the yellow tang. It can be done, but there's no guarantees.
Thanks Scott, I have always wanted a purple and now i have the chance to get a 6" one from a local club member for $165. I am tentative about pulling the trigger on this
Wow I know this video is a year old but $40 to $60 cost price? Not here in Australia. Just last weekend I saw one for sale at my lfs and it was $750. That’s not a typo. $750. They must be in extreme short supply now?
That's interesting; here in the US, they are about $60 now. Take a look at the LiveAquaria link: www.liveaquaria.com/product/345/kole-yellow-eye-tang?pcatid=345&c=15+2971+345
Great video Scott! With the 75, I've had my eye on one of these and you just answered all my questions! Thanks man! 👍🏽
I'm trying to get one as well there gorgeous
Where do you live?
+Mike Lemming I'm in the uk a place called Wigan near Manchester
Nice! I've never been! Maybe one day..
+Mike Lemming you should it's a very nice country lots of scenery and historical building and some nice sea life centres
such a pretty fish i've always wanted one and now that I traded in my yellow tank I might pick up the smallest juvi kole tang I can find. great video btw :)
they are great fish. I highly recommend them.
Great video Scott thanks I love tangs I think you should do a series, a video on each kind o tang in your tank lol
Thanks that will probably happen. People really want a video on the powder blue.
MileHighReefers please do that i got one today lol i love that fish so that would be cool brother
I love love the (Ko-lee) tang. I found out that's how it's pronounced. I'm not judging... Mine was super active and one of the funniest acting fishes I had. It kisses all over the aquarium walls eating algae but the prints remain if you have some growth.

this is a great fish and one of my favs! 8 TANGS! welcome to the TANG CLUB! Great video!
Thanks Steve! I'm finally a real reefer.
Beautiful tang. Love your tank.
Thanks!
I love those green hammers! Nice vid man!
Thanks!
I was so close to getting one of these while back... Almost fell into the dwarf tang trap. When really there are none... Wish I could be a real reef keeper like you tang guys..
Dwarf tangs would be amazing. Your tank is pretty full it might be time for an upgrade.
Good informative video Scott.
Thanks!

well done vid Scott. for the money you really can't go wrong with this prolific algae eater. lol. constantly on the move for food. your fish and tank are looking good...
Thanks Darren! they really are one of the best tangs for the money.
This tang is on my list for sure
They're great fish. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video Scott I really enjoyed it love this fish I still can't find one but when I do it will be going in my tank my lavender tang is in quarantine will be here next Wednesday my Foxface and 2 green chromis will be here Friday
That's so cool! Congrats on all the fish. I can't wait to see the next update video.
+MileHighReefers I can't wait till my corals are as established as yours mine are just dits dotted round the rocks
+MileHighReefers got my foxface this morning its a little stressed but seems to be ok
I have a 125 and I cant decide. I really like the scopas though. Thinking only 2 tangs as I dont want to over due it
Great video! I have a kolee tang and I think he is attacking my Duncan coral..I’m losing heads... im gonna start the algae sheets ... have you seen or heard of this behavior? I would appreciate your answer.
A great video with information .................. :)
Thanks for watching!
Love this video been thinking of getting this tang for my 75. About how long do they take to get from 2-3 inch length to 5-7 inch length?
nneeeco thanks much appreciated. Theses guys will take many years to reach full size and are a great candidate for a 75g.
I looking to setup a saltwater tank i have a lot of room but i cant decide what size I should get im thinking that a 90 to 100 gal might work eny suggestions?

in a 140 with your current stocking you should do well with either of those fish. All the tangs are of a different genus and your tank is big enough.
Scott, I'm planning a 280 gallon tank soon, and like you, I love tangs !! I totally believe in doing a QT tank for all of my fish.

Can I add those chems with other fish in the tank and what food do u recommend
i got a sail fin tang 3- 4 inches And a Vlamingi tang 6- 7 inches long can put a yellow eye kole tang in tank is 220 fish only thx you
Really enjoyed the video Scott. How many Tangs would you recommend for a 90 gallon tank? Currently I have a yellow tang and a powder blue.
Two in a 90 is good you could probably get away with 3 more then that is pushing it.
+MileHighReefers I completely forgot when I posted it that I have a Hippo Tang as well so I think I am done for now...lol
I was going to say add it as well because it does act differently than most tangs. the blue is another very different one but I'm not sure about 4 tangs in a 90
Can you tell us your temperature you like to keep in your tank and what is your neighborhood year-round temperature??
I keep my tank around 77-78 deg. In my area temp ranges from -20 to 110 depending on the season. In the summer I run AC 24-7 to help keep the tank cool.

Some people do freshwater dips. Is it ok
I've had a couple of yellowed eyed kole tangs in my opinion they are the pintos of the tangs
I like a good pinto.
I'm getting one of these tangs as there the smaller tangs BUT I dnt have room for a QT tang I don't have no corals as of yet would it be ok to just put it straight in my display tank?

MileHighReefers my local fish shops unless lol and I wasn't going to get no inverts until I feel the first couple of fish are healthy
I have a tomini tang in my 75 gallon he is awesome
I had one of these fish and it got stuck in between 2 rocks and died. I didn't catch it in time because I was at work all day and it probably happened in the middle of the night. it was a really skittish fish and would jolt around aimlessly. it looked like it got the side of its tail stuck under part of the rock somehow and couldn't get out. Fish can do odd things and every fish is an individual. Sorry for your loss thanks for watching.
Could you please let me know which magnesium test kit you would recommend as I need a new one thanks
I've been running Salifert test kits for years and I've had good luck with them.
+MileHighReefers thanks Scott that's what I have been using so I will buy another one I think I test to often I do it twice a week ... I've got my nitrates to 0ppm I'm so happy and I get my lavender tang tomorrow can't wait
I don't know if you can test too much, but congrats on the 0 nitrates! I just watched the lavender tang video it looks grerat.
+MileHighReefers thanks scott just wish my phone videoed it abit clearer i love the little fish glad i listened to you and got it . Its got a lot of personality not frightened of anything
+Lee and Mandy Battersby nothing beats a used fish.
I love it my friend has a kole tang, but it's a lot more blue. Do their colours vary or something?
Thanks! Their colors do very and there are is a blue eyed variant.
MileHighReefers it's eyes are yellow but it's a beautiful blue that's a bit purple-ish. Definitely be getting one when I can find one for my 125.
They can look very purple. I actually thought it was one of the most beautiful fish I had, closer up. It has a velvety appearance and has thin pinstripes running down the side.
How long would you recommend quarantining a tang for? I was looking at 3 - 4 weeks?
I do 10 days in copper there's a video about that on my channel. With out copper 3-4 weeks is good.
I'll have a look, thank you. Would you say always treat them with something? Or should I just wait and see if they actually need treating?

Thanks! its just a normal photosynthetic gorg. I don't actually know another name for it.
Cool! Thanks man. I'll keep an eye out and see if I can find one. Keep up the good work.
Where did you get ur pukani from im going to get new rock for my 250 gal and i was thinking around 200 pounds of brs pukani and treat it with lanthanum chloride
I got mine from BRS is asked for big pieces. 4 rooks made up 100 pounds. I'm really happy with the way it all worked out.
I am picking one up tomorrow for my 180. Like you, I love me some tang too. I have a yellow and a sailfin. Tomorrow i am getting a kole and a powder brown. I am also thinking about a purple but i feel i 4 tang in my tan would be enough. your thoughts?

Can I keep a small kole eye in a 40 bowfront? Really want a tang...
Yes if you have a plan for when it gets bigger. v
Which tang can I put In a 55 gallon tank please say that one tang can fit I hope a kole but I think thats a little bit too big or a yellow tang?
Both the Kole and Yellow tang are way too big for a 55 gallon tank.
@@limecat1057 is There any other tang I can put in it?
Theyre supposed to be hardy, I ended up killing mine. But great info Scott
Thats to bad, There great fish.
My new yellow eye always has his mouth open. Is the normal behavior or something to be concerned about?
That's seems a little off. Id watch it closely.
Man a lot has changed. Hahahahah
Can a 60 gallon work fore a kole tang? Kuz om gonna get a 60 gallon and really want a tang
Its a little on the small side, but it will probably be fine for all but the largest kole tang.
It looked like he was cleaning your glass too. Is this true?
yeah, they do a great job and always pecking (kissing) the glass and leaving lip prints in the film. Very entertaining to watch.
They were inexpensive but now due to export restrictions they are around $100
wow. thanks for heads up. I personally will still get another one once I get to rebuild. they are great fish.
What if i cant quarantine it? Order from liveaquaria?
No my LFS keeps a set of more expensive fish that they qt and run copper with but if you cant find that get divers den
Can you keep with outher tangs
They do great with other tang genus’s as long as they aren’t too aggressive like a clown tang
Wow I know this video is a year old but $40 to $60 cost price? Not here in Australia. Just last weekend I saw one for sale at my lfs and it was $750. That’s not a typo. $750. They must be in extreme short supply now?
