Also they sell over priced and small cages (and they sell those everywhere) and not all of their food or snacks targeted towards animals are good for them. Last time I was there I was getting a bird because I fell in love with him and couldn’t leave him. They tried to sell me a $50 cage that the bird couldn’t even flap his poor wings in. I didn’t but the cage of course I told them I had one at home after they talked my ear off telling me how to care for my animal incorrectly and then gave me a paper with quotes contradicting almost everything the employees told me.
Katie I went to petco looking for a bird but I gravitated towards the guinea pigs. The employee talked my ear off but she made it fun and was really nice and helpful. The guinea pig I picked might be gone tomorrow but he was really calm and wish I could buy him instead of a random one tomorrow
Please do your research before getting any pet. And also, if you're planning to buy any other animal, please _adopt_ it. By purschasing an animal from the pet store, you are supporting an Animal Mill. An Animal Mill is where animals are getting exesivly bred over & over without anyone thinking about the animal's _health_ . So by buying a pet from the pet store, you're making the shop order more animals for the spot of the pet you purschased, so, that means more animals are getting exesivly bred over & over. Instead, buy from an _Ethical Breeder_ An Ethical Breeder is someone who breeds animals to help develop their _health_ & _temperment_ , since the animal mills ruined that. Adopt, don't shop.

Here is a tip. Guinea Pigs love carrots especially the top leafy greens of the carrot, that is their favorite part. An easy way to give them this treat is to grow your own carrot leafs on your own window sill and it is very easy. When you buy carrots at the grocery store simply slice the top 1 inch of the carrot off regardless of whether it had leafs on it or not. place it in a glass of water without letting the top of the carrot be submerged . I use three toothpicks to stick in it which holds it up . Then place it near a sunny window and within one week you should see the leafy tops begin to grow. after about 3 or 4 weeks you can cut the leafy greens off to feed your guinea pigs and keep the carrot in the water and it will keep growing the leafy tops. Grow as many carrots as you want. Change the water in the glass once or twice a week. You can also do this with celery. And never throw out the middle scraps of a green pepper such as the seeds because guinea pigs love them. They also love the outer leaves of corn as well as corn on the cob. They also love the dry outer skins of onions.
The first one is absolutely true. We only keep two guinea pigs and they have an age gap, and when our guinea pig, Dan, passed away, the other one, Jim, was alone. He barely did anything all day, he was completely depressed. So when we got another guinea pig, Jack, he was much more active and happier. It just shows how much they are affected by their companions.
I have two guinea pigs, and once I saw one of them freeze. The other one kept lifting the other's nose with its nose until it went so high it fell over. Cutest thing ever
That is actually a show of dominance. Guineas placing their nose under another's chin and lifting their head up is another way of them basically saying "I'm superior". c:

Popcorning Piggy I have a friend that doesn't follow most. Like the space one. Her 2 guinea pigs are in a cage that is like the size of my armspan. They rarely get floor time, and they are definitely less happy than the guinea pigs I raised (and got from them because they accidentally put a male and female together). They feed their guinea pigs pellets and hay, veggies once a week. I fed my guinea pigs veggies everyday, and they were always excited to see me. My friend's guinea pigs are always hiding unless there is food. Makes me sad to see those guinea pigs, but they don't think of me as the expert since I got guinea pigs from them and therefore I've had knowledge for less time :/

I owned a guinea pig (female) and I didn't do all this stuff. She didn't have a companion, but she had 5 people (including 3 kids) adoring her everyday. She lived for almost 9 years.
HUGE tip for anyone buying hay - a bale of timothy hay (75-100 lbs) costs the same as a 2.5 kilo bag bought from a typical pet store (@ 25.00 - 30.00). I spent hundreds of dollars before discovering this. The farm suppliy store I deal with (Sharcare in Nanaimo on Van Island) also sells part bales and customer stuffed garbage bags of hay for reduced amounts. Be aware if you go to buy a bale from a farm or suppliy store they are heavy, difficult to move and will triple their size if broken down - I usually fill 3 - 4 large rubbermaid containers and a 3 - 4 industrial sized garbage bags for storage. Love your channel - keep it up!

I guess it just depends on the gender, personality, and breed. Nugget is a female Himalayan. I got her when i was 11 years old but had to give her away when we moved three years later. Shes staying with some friends right now. Its been a couple of months and my parents are getting me another guinea pig.

OMG I just realized I have a Guinean pig named Frieda too but there personalities are the EXACT opposite my Freida was tame in a week! And her sister Reese is rlly shy and it’s been MONTHS and still isn’t tame but you’re right about patients...it might be a long wait and practice to get the pigs tame but when they are it will be TOTALY worth the wait...keep up the GREAT work
Our pig took over 2 years just to let us pet her while inside her habitat. Definitely harder to tame than a dog or cat. They are really fun to watch and interact with once you've spent enough time with them. Definitely worth the patients. Definitely couldn't of done it without your videos. Thank you

You are so right, some Guinea Pigs are calm and some are nervous. I rescued Alfie a couple of years ago and he still runs away from me, his cage mate is calm and usually ready to be picked up. I am still persistent with Alfie!

Guinea pigs are like people, each one has its own personality. Some piggies prefer to be the only one. As long as theyre happy and content and you give them lots of attention you shouldnt be focused on how many there are.

I've been in large brand pet stores and had to point out to managers that some of the pet food had moths and maggots crawling inside the packages. I stayed until they removed them from the shelves.
I feel terrible My pig was lonley In a tiny cage Only had pellets and a but ton of hay and one time I gave her a bowl of veggies (she was alive for about 5-6 months) Didn't take her to a vet (she wasn't sick just poor care taking on my half) I was a eager and wanted to hold her a lot but not give her floor time luckily she was calm
I just adopted a nine week old guinea from a local pet store as I couldn't find any guineas around me from a rescue, her name is Winnie! she has a sibling back at the store who had an eye problem, it's currently on antibiotics and we're going back to get it tonight! we're praying it's another girl haha

They love carrots because it's like pure sugar to them. Just don't give them the carrot part every day or it causes bloating and diarrhea.

My guinea pig doesn't like other pets. He is a jumpy anxious boy. Ziggy is active but he is terrified of others. He enjoys cuddled way more.

I've been in large brand pet stores and had to point out to managers that some of the pet food had moths and maggots crawling inside the packages. I stayed until they removed them from the shelves.

My pig was lonley
In a tiny cage
Only had pellets and a but ton of hay and one time I gave her a bowl of veggies (she was alive for about 5-6 months)
Didn't take her to a vet (she wasn't sick just poor care taking on my half)
I was a eager and wanted to hold her a lot but not give her floor time luckily she was calm

I just adopted a nine week old guinea from a local pet store as I couldn't find any guineas around me from a rescue, her name is Winnie! she has a sibling back at the store who had an eye problem, it's currently on antibiotics and we're going back to get it tonight! we're praying it's another girl haha
