    As a chemist, I can tell you that your safety rules for lye are pretty much standard operating procedure for laboratories and are excellent. The only thing I would recommend is that metal lye storage containers not be sealed tightly until the solution has cooled, otherwise the pressure buildup due to the reaction heat might cause trouble. The plastic containers can expand enough to compensate. 👍👩🏼‍🔬

    • @RoyaltySoaps
      @RoyaltySoaps  Před 4 lety +177

    Almost 7 years ago, I came across a CZcams channel of a young lady making soap, as I was trying to figure out how to best way to help my family members who were dealing with some pretty irritating skin issues. (Mainly, my three year old granddaughter, at the time.) This young lady put me at ease, as I watched and listened to her. I was so scared, in my mid-40s, to even go *near* lye, let alone work with it, so I started playing with Melt & Pour. But watching this young lady, who referred to herself as "The Duchess of Suds", have a guest in a video, she referred to as "The Queen", which was her Mom, Bonnie, I began to feel more and more at ease, as I connected more and more with the lovely woman I've come to adore and know as Katie! Here I am, almost 7 years later, running my own bath & body business, pouring candles and wax melts, and learning new things *still* watching this now married Mommy! Thank you Katie!!

    Idk if another chemist has already pointed this out, but these safety procedures are amazing, and the gold standard for any lab! You didn’t mention it in the video, but I really appreciate that your shoes weren’t running shoes with mesh; running shoes are designed to breathe, and it doesn’t give you enough time to remove your shoe before the lye can get to your feet.

    If you gave a business...please keep a MSDS notebook in an easily seen and accessible area! And all suppliers will send you an MSDS sheet on their chemicals you've purchased OR a link where you can print it off! Get your MSDS Notebook together sooner than later! Yes, every single chemical from dyes and isopropyl to sodium lactate and sodium hydroxide. EVERYTHING!
    (Sorry. That was the Navy coming out in me.)

    Thanks for the videos! I just tried my first soap after 6 weeks of curing. Took a couple of classes online, created a basic recipe with tallow, oils, fragrance and EO. Made a bunch of notes and took my time getting ready. It was stressful but worth it.

Living with anxiety, I didn't think I could work with lye and feel safe, but she makes me feel so safe as long as I was careful, wearing safe gear, and thinking safely during the whole process!

    I'm so glad you told people to go read the lye safety data sheet! They'll get true information instead of the misinformation going around. The main one being : "you should put vinegar on a lye burn" which is absolutely wrong and can actually make things worse.

    Just I thought I had watched so many tutorials I was an expert I found out how wrong I was...I found you video and clicked to listened as I work on my 1st batch of soaps. With my protective gear on I added my lye powder into a semi steel tin and added distilled water. A smoke cloud erupted and I started coughing...Then I heard you say add ice and plenty of ventilation. I went wrong so many ways...Started over but now I'm fearful like I'm in a scary 😨movie because I just watched lye eat through the container. Thank God I placed it outside...The 🙏ice worked..Yayayaya...Thank you!!!!
