  • In this video you will learn 5 things to consider before studying Landscape Architecture. Of course everyone's experience is slightly different but overall from my own experience and talking with others these are the 5 most common things as a Landscape Architecture Major. Overall I still loved my undergraduate experience as a Land Arch major and don't regret my decision at all! I hope this video helps anyone who is considering the Landscape Architecture field or who is looking to learn more about it!

    For each of you commenting below, and wondering whether LA is a good career choice, my advice is to watch more of Carter's videos on the field and look specifically at websites from the ASLA (National Society of LA's) and the various projects that LA's get involved in. I started out in engineering and switched over to LA and never looked back. Followed that LA path within a Federal agency for 5 years and then back to school in Urban and Environmental Planning (the two fields match very well) and then back to Federal service. I think the main reason I pursued this field is that you get to help people, communities, states and large parts of the nation (i.e. river basins) to live in a sustainable fashion on the landscape without destroying the natural aspects of the environment and.........I like to draw :)

    I'm a current environmental engineering student, but I realized I am also super inspired by the creative placemaking and social impact aspects of urban design and landscape architecture! I'm currently struggling to decide if I should complete my STEM degree, switch into something more urban planning related, or switch into design. I don't consider myself much of an artist and I'm generally more suited for STEM and business, but I just find these fields so inspiring. Any advice for the best bachelors and masters program combination for me?

      Lucky for you Landscape Architecture is now a STEM field so I would recommend landscape architecture! Being an artist is a common misconception with our field and you absolutely do not need to be one

    Thank you for making these videos! As you said many people don't know about this field until they are in college...that was me. It is hard to find people sharing their thoughts/tips for this field. I have a BS in Urban Planning and am considering going for a Masters in Landscape Architecture. However, I'm also someone who really values work/life balance and prioritizes family. I know you mention the rigor of design school (I'm curious what school you went to?), but I'm wondering if the field itself allows for a good work/life balance. I've seen mixed opinions on this, so curious what you think?

      Hi Caitlin! It always makes me happy seeing these types of comments! I am from Massachusetts so I did my undergrad at UMASS Amherst, it was an accredited program, and I think it was top 10 in the country for undergrad (not that it matters). I know that there graduate program is pretty high ranked as well, not like MIT,Harvard, Cornell or RISD, but a very respectable program. To answer your question about work life balance is hard for me to answer, In my experience I would say that it has been pretty good, but that said i've only worked for one firm so far so I can't speak for everyone. I think it honestly comes down to making your life work within the job, planning ahead and being aware of deadlines and things so that you can almost plan out your week/month accordingly. I would say however that one thing i've noticed is taking a vacation is hard, you really have to know what the deadline schedule is and know that the work is going to be there when you get back, at least in a small firm we don't really have an opportunity to pass it on to someone else. So finding the right firm that meets your needs will probably be most important! I hope that helps!

    Thank you Carter x I'm in an (unaccredited) BA Urban Planning right now and I'm planning to enroll in an MLA and Master of City and Regional Planning Dual Degree next Fall. I am nervous to start off committed to both degrees, but I feel passionate about both fields. Do you have any insight into LA vs UP? Or have you worked with any Urban Planners so far? The LA dept at my intended school recommends doing LA over a dual degree but I'm worried that's a bias + I don't feel prepared as a planner (as my current program is new and not accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board).

    • @DesignItGreen
      @DesignItGreen  Před rokem +1

      Hi! I think fundamentally the difference will be the scale of the fields. Urban Design tends to focus much more on the big picture and how x,y and z can fit into a city, community or space. Whereas a LA will focus much more on just x, and what x will be and how x will function, work and be built. In my opinion I think you can learn a lot about regional and urban planning within landscape architecture as they are closely related depending on the project scale.

    I'm 16 and have been searching for a major and career that would combine designing public spaces, art and that pays well. The only thing that scares me is the amount of work and organization to have to "thrive" in this field. How can you balance personal/social life and school work

      Check out permaculture design as well. Maybe thats more your speed, in which case you wouldn't need to go back to school for a full fledged degree. If you want to be a landscape architect you'll need a degree, but if you just want to design cool, functional outdoor spaces working for a landscaping company then a degree is unnecessary.

    • @DesignItGreen

      Certainly possible! But will require a lot of time and discipline. Personally, I worked as an intern (20 Hours per week) during my final semester in college and didn't find it to be too terrible, I had a very understanding company as well so has extra time when I needed to during finals and midterms.

      I didn't study online, but from my experience full time landscaping jobs are HARD and EXHAUSTING with very long hours. I had a 30 minute commute, and we started at 6 am. I had to be out of bed at 4:30 and I'd get back home... around 4:30. Completely exhausted if I was lucky, with a migraine if I wasn't. This was just an internship and I thank god I didn't have any homework to do and I only had to work in the field for a few weeks before moving to office work.

    • @DesignItGreen
      @DesignItGreen  Před rokem +3

      Not necessarily true, both Architects and Landscape Architects are underpaid. While Architecture may currently have a higher ceiling in terms of pay. The majority of architects are underpaid and overworked. Landscape Architecture in my opinion will be valued more in the long term with it's social connections, environmental impacts and spatial usage. So don't pick architecture for money, if you want a field that makes money, don't study either field lol.
