I also make these videos for those who may be interested in the forestry mulching business, or in generally operating equipment. The videos are only half of the information. If viewers read through the comment section of all of my videos, the will find tons of great questions from viewers, and I always go into great detail in my answers. I do get a lot of very positive feedback from viewers who deeply appreciate the information I share on here. A lot of learning in a very short time. Most intuitive. every time. Thank you. Owner operator just saves such a lot of additional costs in a smaller company. And one is 101% onto your game. At all times. The other side of the coin is, and to the exact same token, that one person can not operate multiple machines. Regarding the latter. Would you consider sharing profit with an operator who will then know that a broken down machine means no income. And look after equipment much more keenly? Kindly comment? Is there a site establishment and -destablishment charge? And If. What is fair both ways? Time lapse has its place. Very well done. God bless!
In addition to my hourly charge, I also have a one-time charge of $125 to transport my equipment to the job site on the first day. The average distance to customers in my service area is 28 miles, so this covers the non-productive time of equipment transportation. For my business, I only focus on forestry mulcher, and don’t provide any other services. I am a one-person, one-machine operation, and that’s how I want my business model. As such, I don’t require another operator or other machines.

It was a little hard to get the full impact of the clearing progress in this video since there were no leaves on the trees or ground brush, since it's still winter here. I agree. But the jobs usually cover so much acreage that it would take a lot of time moving cameras. When I’m on a customers property, I don’t like wasting time moving them. It just depends on the job.

You use the machine clock while working, but do you leave it running for any other times as in fueling, difficulties related to site? Or is that estimated and written into the actual work hours? BarbedStar Thanks, BarbedStar. You must be an old pro at running these machines then. I'm the owner-operator of this business, so I can make flexible decisions on how I charge for my time. My strategy is to give the customer the most bang for the buck. That's why I charge by the hour. If the machine is running, then it's working to clear the brush. I do go by the job clock for charging the customer. This would include wierd things like if some debris gets wrapped around the mulcher drum. I charge for 'property related' things like that. I don't charge for time it takes me to gas up, or do operator maintenance on the machine. I eat lunch on the go, too. Once I'm in the machine, I usually go hours straight through the day. The machine will run wide open for 8-hours on a full tank of gas. I do also charge an equipment transport fee of $125 to cover the time/cost of trailering/untrailering the equipment. So I always try to do right by the customer, while also covering my time on the worksite. Thanks for that good question!
We have large patches of locust trees on our property. In my experience after cutting said locust if you don’t treat the stump of said locust it starts to sprout back. Would mulching prevent this from happening?
Kurt Denny Well, yes and no. These forestry mulchers will cut the tree flush with the ground. Some species of trees, like locusts, will continue to try to resprout. But as long as the area is mowed, and the locust sprouts are not allowed to grow leafs, then the root system will die out naturally when it's energy is exhausted from the roots. Without leafs to capture light, the tree can't process the light energy into food by photosynthesis, and the root dies. On my farm where I had thinned out forested areas, I only mow it one-time a year in the fall. The majority of things that row up over the summer months are the natural forest grasses and various weed plants, which is all fine with me and the wildlife..
Is there anything you can tell me about renting a mulcher and machine for my property,I've run skid steer and ctls and lig skidders,I want to rent a machine to Clean up slash on my property and possibly get into the land clearing end also
Michael Pici I think Bobcat charges something like $1100-$1300 per day to rent. Not sure if that includes delivery/pickup. Cat may rent them, but not sure. Those are the only places you'll find forestry mulchers for rent. It's good that you have experience operating a skidsteer, that will help. That's all I really know about renting them. Calling them directly is best for accurate information.
Great job Dave! Good thing those action cameras can take a beating. What product do you use to wash your machine with? I have a hard time cutting through all the biomass and sap residue that gets all over the front of the Bobcat.
GRANE LANDWORKS Yea, my GoPro camera was like a wood magnet. Kept hitting it with mulch, and tree limbs kept falling on it. Had to reset it 5 times. I had to get away from it. Haha! I use a cleaner called Awesome! It's yellow. Get it at the Dollar store, and it works great.

Les R I buy my equipment new, but you can buy used. This is a 2017 Bobcat T770, cost $82,000. Mulcher head was $23,000. 20,000 GVWR gooseneck trailer cost $6100. 2017 Ram 3500 w/Cummins cost $52,000. I charge $150/hour where I'm located an hour west of Nashville, TN. Every business has a different cost structure and business plan, so you have to work out your own numbers if you want to be successful.

Cody Payant Forestry mulching is definitely a good side business. And having a big, heavy, high-flow skidsteer also handles a good snow-blower and box plow for the snow months.

Republic of Chad Tx I appreciate you following and watching my videos. The other attachments you need will depend on what services you provide and advertise that you do. For my specific business, I only focus on forestry mulching clearing of material 8"-diameter and smaller. So I only use a forestry mulcher attachment. But I also have a root grapple and construction bucket that I use often on my farm. I know other operators will do many other services in addition to mulching, such as stump grinding, they will cut down larger trees to pile/burn or haul them off, do basic grading and dirt work, snow removal, etc. Whatever business you can drum up to leverage the equipment capabilities you have.
East Texas Suburban Homesteading If the 1-acre looks like about the same type & density material, and terrain in this video, then this took me about 6-hours to clear this 1-acre area. I charged $1,025 for this (2019 pricing). Depending on your location, mulcher operators charge between $150-$250 per hour, for this size machine.
FORESTER Croatia I cleared this site for a builder who is going to build a new home on it. But other reasons I clear brush and trees up to 8"-diameters are that land-owners want to open up their land to use it for some purpose, such as putting livestock on it, or planting a crop, or walk/riding trails, or just want open access to their land. Also, clearing the under-brush creates a healthier growing environment for the remaining trees.
