This vid totally made my day, thank you. Im just getting back into racing, last time I raced it was a Team Associated RC12E at Rattys Raceway in North Attleboro MA. I remember watching Pete and Repete Fusco truing tires on their 1/8 scale gas road race cars by using the abrasive track area surface. Old school for sure. Thanks guys!

I’ve been debating which way to go in terms of electronics for a new buggy for weeks. This video and the comments from other rc owners in the comments helped me decide. 👍
Im a Mod game in 2wd buggy and 4wd buggy heres the thing 17.5 is really just a pretty mild mod motor now if you enjoy messing with timing and gearing and not having to control the throttle more than its for you but its not stock anymore. I actually just turn down my 7.5 or 6.5 if its to fast or the punch control etc you have to learn the throttle more or you over clear jumps easy or crash. Personally myself I don't like spending $100+ on any motor just for the power. I run on high pile Astroturf.
On USA clay / dirt tracks there won't be much difference between stock and mod.
In the UK because of the wet weather nearly all tracks are high grip astro, on astro the difference is very noticeable and a 6.5 mod car will whoop a 17.5 stock.
That makes sense! Have to try some of that outdoor turf one day...

We're running a lot of carpet here too, now, with some crazy traction. The thing is, even with the better traction, tracks tend to also be a lot more technical to fit in small spaces, and as a result a 6.5T mod car here won't be able to open up much.

I personaly think, that the stock class should be the go to for beginners who want to get a feeling for the hobby without paying a fortune on equipment.
At the moment it is the complete opposite. If you want to be competitive, the stock classes are WAY more expensive than the mod classes. You always need to have the best motor and batterys if you don´t want to have a disatvantage.
Here in Germany the stock classes are dying because of this "arms race". Thats very sad in my opinion but I will never understand why the fast guys in stock don´t want to step it up to the mod classes.

Used to race at a track where they used hand-out stock motors that were sealed. About all you could do was maybe clean and lubricate. The beginners could learn to drive instead of getting frustrated crashing all the time.
Stock used to be a beginner class with 27T brushed motors and 6 cell NiCds or NiMH batteries. Cars were slow and rightfully so a good place for a beginner to learn. With the advent of LiPo batteries and brushless motors, stock class is moving at the speeds mod used to 10 years ago. I enjoy mod. I think in stock their is too much emphasis on voodoo litanies to the race gods for podiums. Remember what happened to on road touring car.
Please make more videos of your T6.1! Setup videos, tuning etc. All that good stuff you show us with your buggys.
I used to have fun with the stock class at our circle track it was a blast but I love the power of a mod for sure
I have a 5.0 DC that I just got. Can't wait to get it built. We don't race stock at my local club so mod it is. First time racing in years. Like legit almost 18 years. My 11 year old was interested in it so we picked up a couple of slash ultimates and started hitting the track and he was hooked. So was dad. Can't wait to throw down on some 2wd buggy.
At my club in australia we only have mod racing so you can run whatever motor you have. Most run 6.5 to 10.5.
we run a stock 17,5 buggy class and a mod buggy class .. the 17.5 buggys are about pulling about 2 more laps than the mod class BUT the layout is small, real small!

Honest truth, I can run more consistent and faster hot laps with a 17.5. BUT.... I hate "stock" class and everything that needs to be bought to be competitive. You can buy a box stock kit and race Mod and be competitive. No chance with stock. Ceramic bearings, lighter drivetrains, chasing motors and tune, chasing batteries, expensive charging set ups. Honestly, Mod is a "stock" class. The cost of stock drives away newbies. How about a true spec class. Kit car with a max cost limit, no timing sealed motor, and blinky. No mods, out of box other than adjustments to tuning. That is how Traxxas and the Slash brought back popularity in 1/10th offroad. Lets not even consider a 21.5 class. It will be the same as 17.5.
Yep i agree. 17.5 is everything that's wrong with competitive racing at the club level. We have couple sponsored stock racers at my track who run these souped up 17.5 cars and charge at 70 amps to beat up on 12 yr old kids and avg joes because they are scared to race us fast guys in mod.... when they try mod they can't control the throttle and run back to stock to beat up on the avg joe father/son racers.
stock being a fast class at big races is cool, but at the club level its so trash.
@@MP422ownz our "sponsored" racers now race mod at our club. We have very competitive sportsman(no sponsors allowed) and expert stock classes. I race sportsman. Tho I prefer mod, I am not good enough to compete. Honestly I truly hate dumping paychecks into keeping my cars competitive but I enjoy having the ability to podium every now and then
We only do modified in the uk, which means with only one class you get a good gauge of your skill level. Great videos Ryan, 👍
This is one the the best rc videos I've seen in a while. I have a rc channel, and watch video often, when @ 2:18 in, you say in a kinda quite voice, "where you going?" He replyed, "Far away" I couldn't stop laughing! Great video man!
Aside from a few car lengths in the long back straight, I think the smaller motor actually made your car more driveable and likely faster in the turns. Surprising how little different there is in lap times for how much difference there is in motor.
I like modified racing better. I am not a very big fan of the “motor game” in stock. In modified it is all driving.

Mod is way more fair racing. I've been to races where the A main stock drivers would have finished in the A Main of mod. WTF?
The problem with stock is that it becomes a game of who can spend the most money and find that special secret to cheat a little..... whereas in mod, everyone's car has way too much power so it all comes down to better driving.
@@zeno6111753 Exactly! Stock is not a newbie class. It is far more competitive than mod because unless you know all the little tricks and dump a ton of money into your car, you have no chance of having a competitive. It gets promoted as a class for new folks and fairer racing, but it is the exact opposite.
Mod is simple. Just buy a 5.5 or 6.5 of any brand and you have a car that has way more power than anyone would ever need on the track. Then you dial it back. You don't have to squeak every ounce of speed out of your equipment. You just focus on driving and setup.
IMHO, stock should mean BONE STOCK. Racing Traxxas Bandits with the stock radio. Stock should be at least two or three seconds slower/lap than mod imho. It needs to be so slow, no one with any experience would want to race that class.
stock used to be brushed 27 turn with 20 degree timing, you'd look at the track, pick your pinion for it and go, if you knew your car well enough.

at the turf track at Thornhill Racing Circuit in Texas, it was very common to see stock cars turn faster lap times than mod, at that point mod died off, then after COVID the entire 1/10 program died off and everyone runs on the 1/8 dirt track, well as you already know people prefer to run on dirt, ha! The owner has been thinking about switching the turf track back to dirt, time will tell.
I prefer stock as I am still learning to stay on the track. LOL

I like both stock and mod. Mod is a blast and alot of fun. Switching out a mod motor to a stock is good for keeping eye hand coordination balanced.
When I first got into the hobby I started with stock and switched to mod. I switch motors out to keep balanced between the 2 motor types.

I hate the motor of the week game that’s always gone on in stock racing (back to when the motors were sealed non rebuildable and fixed timing) I’ve always ran mod until they started getting so fast my RT couldn’t keep pace (still before brushless motors) Life kept me from racing for a bit but when I got back into the competition side of RC 10-12 years ago I’m suddenly hanging with the old guys at the track running17.5 (they were still old when I was still young 😂)
Awesome video Ryan! Very cool compareison thought it would be a bigger diffrence in straight line speed but they were pretty similar. In sweden there is basicly no mod so everyone runs a quick a motor as they can handle but i think i would have learnd quicker if there was a stock class were i could learn driving lines and such without having to handle all that power. Anyway nice video take care!
I think it's great for people to learn things like corner speed and momentum from the stock class. Makes for a better mod driver in the end!

Was this in Crestview? I grew up there, Bull dawgs class of 98'. The wasn't anything this sick in that town back then.
El Jefe no this track is in Ocala Florida. There is a track called B&T raceway being opened back up by Walmart behind the hospital they should be done with it by March 👍

Cool video, fun race. It's interesting to see just how a "faster" mod car performs vs stock. On this course, it looked like it was almost evenly matched..cuz the only advantage seemed to be the straight away, but even there, by the time the mod got up to speed, it was turn time, and it hardly had enough track to capitalize on it.
Do you think gearing down would help in this situation? To try to accelerate faster?
Possibly! This track is also exceptionally high on the grip scale so both cars can put down a tremendous amount of acceleration naturally. I think too low of gearing would result in front tire lift for the mod car in this scenario.
@@RyanHarrisRC only exp i ve had in relation to gear ratio and acceleration was w 8th scale and the brutal power of those systems actually led to "if u want more acceleration, use bigger pinion" . since those 3hp motors will spin anything(within reason), just asking for more amps from battery pack, resulting in even harder acceleration than spinning some lil pinion w less resistance to higher rpm. eg - a tripple with a short run up was much easier to clear running 16t compared to running 14 or 13t and barely making it. this was an impressive observation. if you wanna elaborate on that it will be welcome.
people not into it don't know the differences between stock and mod motors, or suspension setups. I always liked suspension softer and more reactive, let the pan slap some when it lands, as long as it's not bouncing I was pretty happy. fun and games with springs and oil.
I went from 17.5 to Mod. 17.5 was just too competitive for me. But that was years ago. Now that I'm getting my B5M track ready again, I find out my local track doesnt race alot of 2wd Mod. Mabey back to 17.5 for me!

Can you do a video on the basics of setup? I know you go though each setup based on the track, but can you make a video for the noobs explaining in general what change if your car needs more grip, or understeers, oversteers, etc. We don't have your exact cars, yet.

My local tracks the mod buggies only lap a second faster and on race days most of the stock guys are faster.
Interesting to me was the difference under breaking. Seems to me that Ryans car was better in the breaking zones
JBpiification on my car we had the break turned down quite a bit to keep the rear wheels from locking up when I needed them. That’s probably why his breaks better

My car was setup to be more stable in general. Hunters car thrived on breaking a little loose to carry more corner speed. Just different setups to suit our desired approach!
Braking not breaking. Brake not break. Breaking is expensive while braking is free :-)

Stock is cool but the money you have to spend to lighten it up to make it fast. Once you do that the 17.5 actually runs more like 13.5-10.5 speed range.

that track was to stock friendly , the disturbance on the straight is literally what kept it close to the mod now this is if anyone is using logics and iq . So it would of been a better challenge on a bigger track. It comes down to full throttle time intervals . If u had a few areas with over 2 seconds of full throttle the mod would blow the doors off the 17.5

Hey Ryan, are you still running the stock DC Elite diffs/axles in your "Stock Spec" build? Or did you change to the lightweight MIP Puck system?
Stock axles and diff! Trying to run those instead of the light weight stuff so my setups are closer to what the mod guys run.

I have run stock and mod at a ton of different tracks and almost 100% of the time, the guy that TQs 17.5 posted a time fast enough to either be at the tail end of the mod Amain or the front of the B main. To get the most out of a mod car, you really need to be in the too 1-2% of RC racers. 17.5 is so fast now it really shouldn't be marketed as a beginner class, it just a class for people that lack the superhuman ability to run mod. The motor and battery game gets super old in stock but a really good setup can still make the difference
I wouldn't even call it a class for people who lack the ability to run mod. It's a class for buying wins at this point, it's gotten to the point where people are going to F1 levels of weight and rolling resistance reduction to squeeze every last ounce of speed out of the car, and that's really driving costs up. We need to just flat-out get rid of the class and replace it with a spec SRX2 RTR class or something similar.
@@VestedUTuber for oval and on road I completely agree. In offroad, if buying the latest and greatest gets you a win, the track layout is too simple. I club raced with Aaron Kothman(tlr driver) for years and he would occasionally run 17.5 against the rest of us running mod and destroy us. I do think that there should be a class below that though. But the slower the cars go, the easier it is to buy wins

That's the thing, though - modern off-road for the chassis classes that actually divide stock and mod is functionally more like onroad with jumps now due to the prevalence of carpet tracks.
Nothing against carpet itself for club-level racing, by the way, although I don't think it should ever be used for high-level events since that influences vehicle design and racing platforms are becoming overspecialized to the point where some companies see fit to release entire different cars for different surfaces.
@@VestedUTuber I know most carper oval stuff has moved to 21.5 because of how fast 17.5 is. Racing on surfaces with too much grip will always result in a pay to win type of racing. I was never bothered by winning. Just knowing that I was doing well. Not that I didn’t win, that just wasn’t what my goal was. Always someone better out there. The mentality of “I want to win” vs “I want to beat the people I’m supposed to” has damaged all of racing. But that’s just my opinion. I started young with national level drivers at my local track so winning wasn’t in the cards. Getting close was the goal
Where I am, everyrhing is open/mod... we race 1/10 and 1/8 together on the same outdoor dirt tracks... so 17.5 isn't a thing here...
As far as the video, looked like after the switch, he adjusted to your stock buggy a tad better than you adjusted to his mod...
Isaiah Furrow it’s pretty easy switching from mod to stock, usually I would be running 13.5 4wd with the old car but now I’ll be able to run mod with the new 22x-4. Hope you enjoyed the video!!
My idea: not racing but timed. I would like you both to do 10 laps on your own cars and get your best lap time. Then swap cars and do 10 laps and see how your best lap on each other’s car compares.
I race 1/8 nitro and got the chance to do a few laps with a schumacher laydown on carpet. 4.5t motor. 2nd lap full throttle onto main straight. And straight into the wall and broke back end of car. Very embarrasing haha

Well like it was just mentioned Ryan runs a 17.5 and I run a 6.5. Also mentioned in the video, Ryan’s car tends to have a lot of droop so the front end dives more in the corners and has more roll in long sweepers. While my car is a little more flat in the corners with less droop, and less weight transferring from side to side

Kyle Thatcher no problem we all start somewhere! it’s only the motor class, as far as car setup goes you can run your car however you want so you can test and tune your cars to get them feeling exactly how you want! Hope that clears that up 🙂

Go hang out at a local track and talk to some guys. Most people there are usually pretty cool and will give you some tips what works well there.
I just got into racing 1/10 buggy myself. Ive been in the RC Hobby for 5 months started out with a Traxxas Slash VXL then Arrma and one day I hear about a track 20 miles away. I went to check it out and everyone was sooo cool and respectful. I explained I haven't done any racing or even any experience with a race buggy and took in all the knowledge people were sharing. One of the guys handed over his Sanwa M17 transmitter and allowed me to drive his buggy!! I couldn't believe it. I was super slow being its not my car. All I had a home was the slash vxl and an Arrma Typhon 6S. I asked if I could bring my slash up to the track and I was able to. I just went up during times that no races were going on and practiced. I definitely wanted a race buggy though. I saved up money and 3 weeks later I went back and bought a TLR 22 5.0 Elite and will be taking it to the track for the 1st time in about 2 weeks!. Definitely go to your local track and talk with people!
Head to your local track and chat it up with a few of the locals and see what your seen is running! Then see where your budget fits to determine what you will start with 👍

Interesting to see how similar those to classes are. But whats hitting me these days is where the rc car hobby is going. No wonder why the rc racing has become an "elite hobby" Where is the real stock class with DT02s TT02s and so forth? Hobby stores is selling massive amounts of entry level cars, but no one cares racing them. Even in vintage classes they use brushless. It's a joke. There was a time, you could buy a race car you could bash in the dirty back yard. What do you get now? A carpet car for spesial batteries. They even dont look like buggies anymore. Just a piece of plastic cover keeping carpet dust out.

I couldn't tell any difference have to drive it myself. Two different drivers different styles.
Honestly, stock as it is needs to go. Between the fact that in most cases they're running comparably fast with mod only having the advantage in the straights, the fact that stock has become a massive pay-to-win money pit, and the fact that the cars are too fast for the class to serve as a proper beginners class now, the class no longer serves a purpose.

Of course..mod car can easily pass the stock on the straights. there is no debate on that.
The cool thing here was. The mod driver controlling the stock car while the stock driver controlling the mod car..for me. The stock driver cannot handle the power and maneuverability of the car.

You probably need a new ESC which pairs well with your motor. Unfortunately you can't just run a 4.0 motor with any ESC and expect it to work. That's my noob response anyhow - haven't raced for nearly 20 years.
