- Matheran is India's smallest hill station situated near Mumbai in Raigad district. An 800m asl hill station developed by British has the Maharashtra's only hill railway. With vehicles allowed only till Dasturi point rest of Matheran needs to be covered by foot or horse ride. Matheran is the best hillstation and packed with all features near Mumbai.

Hey, I live in the same district of Raigad where it is situated, there are lots of mountains here and in Monsoon it feels like heaven with all that greenery. Actually most of Western-Maharashtra (Sahyadri mountain range) and Konkan is like this only, mountains with lush green forests with some of the most breathe taking places.

Gautam no one can document western ghats the way you. This video took my breath away. Such a beautiful hillstation n so so near to Mumbai. We college friends had been to Matheran once but never visited most of the points of interest due to budget n time constraints. After watching your this video I am thinking of making a trip with family. Mahabaleshwar we have been upteenth time. Matheran seems very enchanting during monsoon. Let the pandemic get over. Wonderful video. Matheran was, and still is, one of our favourite hill stations. We have been to this place, umpteen times & in all seasons and trekked up much before the motorable road came up. The smell of Matheran, a mix of fresh air and mud and wood smoke is always exhilarating, when you are trekking up. Its beauty is captivating, particularly in the monsoon months, with greenery all around. I think it is one of the prettiest hill stations in the world, if you can forget the mall. And for those in the know, a fresh Mahua drink with Batata Wada, after a long trek is something to look forward to.
Your video has done justice to Matheran, bringing out the real magic of this quaint place. Wonderful Photography. Bravo & Thank you.

I was here in 1962 with my family. This place has change a lot in 58 years. The roads are much better, in fact in places there were no roads. We had to use a tonga part of the way. It was an amazing place even to a young boy from Bombay.
indeed that time was more rustic and pure, still this place is a bliss :)

by far the most beautiful videography ever on matheran. My compliments. Some monologue wouldve made it even better.
Just to add some bits : There is an 1888 built mosque in bazar peth, shouldve shown that. For those who are going to visit Matheran (once called "Matterhorn", by the british), you can find amazingly cheap hotels and homestays if you go off season. Anytime after diwali vacations and before christmas is damn cheap, but you will find it sans tourists and the buzz. Eat at Hakimis or Shabbirs (bazar) if you are a non veg lover. Take an early morning horse ride to One tree hill. I can horse ride very well. If you can not ride, hire a "rider" You have to pay for his horse and for him. He will hold the reigns of your horse and ride fast, it will give you an adrenaline rush like no other. Matheran was the summer destination of the Parsees and Brits in the 20th Century. The bungalow with the statues at 17:18 is a Parsee house, on the way to One tree hill. The Hill doesnt have the tree anymore but its called so because it had only one tree on it. Its a dangerous climb to the peak of One tree hill which you should attempt only if you ahve trekking experience.
The railway was the brainchild of Hussain Peerbhoy, Adamjees son. Its narrow gaugae and the engines were brought in fro Germany. To this day the train blows its whistle at "Aman Lodge" as a tribute to the Peerbhoys. Aman lodge is their erstwhile home. Adamjee's story is a great one. From selling matchboxes on the road at Fort to becoming Indias richest man. He was extremely Charitable. His Hospital Bai Ambabai Hospital (Now Saifee Hospital) at CHarni road treated plague victimes for free and he established dozens of schools for the poor. His Bombay house "Saifee Mahal" is now the residence of the head of the Bohri community, the Maulana. Maulana confiscated much of Adamjees wealth using shrewd means. Adamjee was called "Qaiser-E-Hind" (Meaning care taker of India) in his lifetime. This moniker was officially bestowed upon him by the British rulers. It is sad we dont read of him in the history books :(.
I live in mumbai and matherans is my familys favorite vacation destination. I used to take the last train from Sandhusrt road to Neral and reach matheran early morning just to ride horses ALL DAY. That too when I wasnt even 20. It is an amazing little gem and you will fall in love with the place. There is so much more I want to write... but its become my lengthiest comment ever on youtube already!!

Guess what I keep watching this video during summers waiting for monsoons and a trip to Matheran. Also gautam you've been to almost each of the peaks visible on this video and there are dedicated videos for each , just to name a few Irsalgad, prabalgad, peb, kalavantin, chanderi and mallangad also visible from dasturi Naka shot are gorakhgad.
