Fast forward a year I prayed for a Bible study thats really into the Word. My memory used to AMAZE everyone when I was a kid. I didn’t even really have to try. Especially if it was something I enjoyed. At 55+, I can still remember certain things from childhood. I’m a PK and a preacher’s grandkid and great-grandkid, btw. At 16, I fully gave my heart to Christ and later, I realized that given my bloodline, I’m a target of the NME.
At 17, I was at a meeting and went forward for prayer. I was pushed to the ground and on the way down (with no ‘catcher’ behind me) I hit the back of my head on to the seat of the wooden front row pew. Hard! Memorization of scripture as a baby Christian was a major struggle at that point and since. But thank God for the Holy Spirit, our Helper. Hallelujah!
Thank you for this video -this channel! I will be employing this wisdom for sure as I continue to believe God for restoration of all things; including memory. The memory of the righteous is blessed! 😁 Shalom!

I have appreciated your series on Bible Memorization. This one with Andy Davis has been my favorite so far. I have also restarted my Scripture memory to"redeem the time." When I first read Davis's book, I found it refreshing that I don't have to force myself to remember that book word for word years down the road. Mnemonics are wonderful tools but sometimes they can take away from the reason you are learning Scripture in the first place which David stated so well: To love the Triune God.

    • @BibleMemoryGoal
      @BibleMemoryGoal  Před 3 lety +2

Agreed. I think there's a beautiful freedom in allowing yourself to "forget" some of what you've memorized, because it's more about the journey than it is the final goal.
That being said, my personal goal is more long-term memory. Perhaps it's a pipe dream, and I'll have to face reality some day, but I'm going to work toward it because it's something that attracts me :)
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@BibleMemoryGoal I will pray for you in this goal. I know with all of your memory research you know about Spaced Repetition. With the Davis Method, after his "100 days", try again 1x/week x 4, 1x/month x 3, 1x every 3 months x 4. I believe theoretically you could have it cold in your long term by then. Your perseverance will be fruitful in many ways because "the Word of God does not return void!" You are sowing for the long term!

Long term does come! I memorized verses as a kid, I got into memorizing chapters as a teen…not many. Got sick just after I got engaged, and so I asked my guy to just sit and read me Philippians and Ephesians again and again, as I had just finished them and then wanted to work on Romans.
Through the years I’ve not done well at reviewing them, but I realized when my kids were teens that I if I had memorized verses in a certain translation, I could NOT read then in another translation or hear them read…cause my mind was battling to go back to the translation I had them memorized in.
Now in my mid 50s I have battle brain fog for the last 10-15 years, and I’ve not been able to put much new information in…but I still run across verses I’ve still retained fairly well.
A year ago, I decided to finally REALLY try again to challenge my mind and FINALLY learn and retain Biblical Hebrew…with pictures and audio, I was doing pretty good. 4 months after starting I was listening to Psalms chapter 8, one of my favorites, that I had memorized in English, and I realized that the last verse had only one word in it that I didn’t already know in Hebrew. So that Saturday God impressed on me to memorize it in Hebrew. That Tuesday I was hospitalized for a week, and I was so glad that I had taken the time to memorize my first Hebrew verse, since it was the only Hebrew I had access to most of that week. I also ended up going over many of my other memorized verses that I know, since I wasn’t well enough to read.

Enjoying the journey! Some of my sweetest memories were when my 9 yo son began really “loving” scripture memorization. We had worked at memorizing “family verses” when the kids were younger, really started when kids were between ages of 5 yo and he had just turned 2 yo and memorized his first verses. But as the youngest, by the time he was 9, we had turned over their devotions and scripture memory to their own self discipline. But when spring hit and he wanted to spend more time outside skating or shooting baskets, he finally decided he didn’t want to waste that time mentally, and asked me to join him so I could drill him on verses he had been working on. Those walks, etc., were some of my favorite times! Listening to him just pour out the scripture passage after passage.
    To enjoying the journey M

I am glad he is memorizing so much Scripture and I am no where near close to memorizing what he has but I am in the process. But it is very discouraging to hear someone say they "kiss a Bible book goodbye" and then forget about it for years. And that they would not "afflict" anyone even a spouse with listening to a recitation of a whole book at once. As a teenager I got a chance to hear a man at a conference recite the entire book of Revelation and there were hundreds of other people in the room listening too. It was a great blessing to me and my other teenage friends in attendance. He would probably get many people to listen if he was not so pessimistic about God's word and God's people and invited people to come out on a Sunday night to hear him recite a book. Many would come just for curiosity and skepticism and would end up hearing the word of God. I would be the first to sign up! Thanks for this interview and God bless.

I wouldn't get bothered by it too much. It's not that he's actively trying to *forget* what he memorized, he's just realizing that in the limited time he has, he would rather spend it memorizing new books of the Bible instead of constantly reviewing the old ones. The Holy Spirit can still use what we've memorized, even if we can't recall it exactly word for word whenever we want to!

I love memorizing books, but sometimes kick myself that I don't find time or memory to keep up the retention at recitation level of all the books I've memorized. It comforted me that he said most people can't keep that much in their memory at once, but it's there in your stored memory, like a concordance for the HS to draw on at the right moment. That's true. That is what happens, and that's a good thing. I found the strategy of saying each passage for 100 days then releasing it very helpful.

  • @Post-ModernCzechoslovakianWar

Wow, this is a good interview, and it's encouraging that he's been at it for so long. That must be an incredible blessing to have so much scripture in the mind, (even if it's not always consciously there.)
I feel some of what he says touches on perfectionism, which has lately petrified me.
He has great advice, but I just feel like his memorization method sounds like torture to copy it exactly for me. I like being spontaneous, but as much as I hate it, I need some order. I can take bits from what he does, and it's encouraging, but I feel I have to do something different, I think I may be more like that actor guy from Warriors of the Word you interviewed, but with a heavier emphasis on the visual element.
So that segues into another point. I like how you interview more than just one person, and they each seem to have different nuances of style in their study methods. So it's not just like you have only one or two ideas to work with when first starting.

Hi pastor Andy, thank you for your insights. Please, I have a question about retaining what I v memorized. Lets say a person has been walking in sin, for many years n overwhelmed five senses with it n worldly knowledge. Now that person has so much difficulty in retaining what s/he had memorized. And lets say that this person has lots of trouble focusing on Scripture and getting insights. U know that story about the sower and his seeds. How is that person to protect the words from the evil one, worries of life, d world n our own selves? How to ensure that the words would be deeply rooted and produce fruit as God intended?
Sorry about the length of this question. But its heartfelt. Would greatly appreciate for any insight.
Thank you Josh for your efforts🙏🙏 God bless you

Hi Sanju, I understand the difficulty and frustration. I believe that having something "deeply rooted" is something only the Holy Spirit can do in us. It is our responsibility to ask Him for this kind of help and seek him in the places He reveals himself: the Bible. That doesn't have to be through memorization - it could just be daily time spent reading, studying or reciting it.

Memorizing God's word is great! It is extremely difficult but not impossible because Pastor Andy, sister Susan, and brother Tom Meyer have proven it. I heard brother Tom saying that he started memorizing the scriptures at the age of 25. I'm 22 years old. I believe that I too can memorize God's word, at least all the 27 books of the New Testament. Now I started memorizing the epistle of Jude and I have memorized verses one to six. I believe I should not get discouraged but keep going.
Brother, should I get discouraged to memorize all the 27 books of the New Testament?
What should I do to memorize all the 27 books of the New Testament like sister Susan? First thing, I should ask God this question because He is the only one who can fulfill our heart's desires (Psalm 37:4).
My goal is to at least memorize all the 27 books of the New Testament.
Please share with me essential Bible memorizing tips as points.
I started memorizing by repeating the verses louder. But I like to know whether there are other methods that are interesting.
So please, brother, help me to memorize the scriptures especially the New testament by simply giving me essential tips as points.
I will make sure I will follow them.

So like those who read understand, meditate, on the Bible today are going to enjoy time with Jesus roaming around with angels, even being teachers to those who did not understand Bible. And them they will surely regret it.

Actually, Obadiah has only 21 verses. I do get what the speaker is saying. Last year our Pastor got the whole Church to memorise Psalm 100 - just five verses (15510 - 15514), and at one time, I had it, and so did many of the others, but now, let us say over nine months later, I can recall the general idea, and get some of it, and it is all in there somewhere, but if one TRULY memorised something, it would be retrievable every single time.

While I do agree that memorization is something to be celebrated, the idea I preach on this channel is that memorizing the Bible is not a holy act of itself. It is only when we allow what we memorized to transform us (Romans 12:1-2) that it becomes a "sign" of God's work in us.
