  • On Thursday the 1st of February I visited Sydenham station to hopefully get a glimpse at the Sydney Metro City and Southwest testing! I sure did! I counted nearly 10 trains within 30 minutes! I also dive into information currently available about the Sydney Metro.

    0:45 Second metro train arrives + explanation of arrival into Sydenham station
    2:34 How the metro trains enter and exit the tunnels at Sydenham
    3:49 Third train arrives and departs Sydenham
    5:00 Montage
    8:35 Metro train fault on approach to Sydenham
    10:10 Final metro train departing Sydenham

    The “fault” may also of just been the train waiting at a virtual signal, (because it doesn’t use conventional signals, it uses HCTS (High capacity Train signalling) because of the earlier train being late.

    It is a little concerning how the metro trains don’t always align with the platform doors, which maybe a problem during regular service.

    • @driverm4544
      @driverm4544 Před 6 měsíci +12

      The computer system doesn't always align dead on perfect, but at the same time, there's a secondary system which will not release the platform doors if the train is too far misaligned. When it goes into passenger service, there are many systems that work together to calculate passenger load, braking requirements and location requirements. So far, the section that is open in the North hasn't had too many issues with stop markers, but it's just the way each train is built is slightly different, so each one till have a slightly different stopping position, hence why the platform doors are much wider than the Metro doors

    • @exploringsydneysrailways
      @exploringsydneysrailways Před 6 měsíci +6

      Well that's one of the reasons why they're testing the line, to get the alignment right!

      The trains are manually driven (at least, when I was there) but they have began driverless testing now. It’s just a matter of the drivers getting used to stopping positions on the new line. Not to mention that there’ll most likely be faults on opening day like back in 2019 when Stage One opened.

    Hi Elliot, interesting seeing the Metro trains in action testing at Sydenham. When are these Metro trains due to start fully operating there? The tunnel looks to be quite close after leaving Sydenham. I used to live at Marrickville on the Bankstown line until moving to Melbourne in mid 1981. While living at Marrickville, I often visited Sydnenham station by train. Anyway, all the very best. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

    when these test trains get to Chatswood, do they have a crossover to return properly on the correct track? I assume it is still isolate from the working section so cannot use the existing crossover.
    Also has anyone worked out when this new section is open, how many sets of trains are needed to do the peak hour every 4 minutes, and how many during off peak 10 minutes interval?

    why are they fliping the bankstown line into metro?

    • @exploringsydneysrailways
      @exploringsydneysrailways Před 6 měsíci +3

      So it can run into the new tunnel from Chatswood to Sydenham. Sydney Metro trains use incompatible signalling to Sydney Trains trains so they need to be kept separate.

    • @AShadowinthedark
      @AShadowinthedark Před 6 měsíci +4

      Trains on the bankstown line run through the city circle, which is at maximum capacity. converting one of the lines that run though the city circle to metro adds capacity on all the other lines in addition to the line being converted.

    • @Woodland26
      @Woodland26 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@AShadowinthedark at the moment it is quite fun studying the Bankstown line pattern. Going to the city, it can go around Town Hall side first, sometimes at peak it goes around Museum first, or sometimes alternate. You have Liverpool train via Bankstown at Platform 19 at Central, Lidcombe at Platform 22, or in the weekend Liverpool train also from platform 22.

      I wonder the same thing, especially since I counted 9 seperate trains not including the bonus 5 in the depot, it makes me wonder how all the trains fit in there and if they even end up parking them underground, but it’s most likely that they now to run it up to Tallawong empty as I have seen a lot of empty metro trains go past stations on the Northwest which most likely means those are the ones that travel down there for the day.

      🤣 it’s most likely just for testing purposes, they will almost certainly implement the existing announcements on the Northwest, although I’d like to see them re-do the station announcements similar to the announcements onboard as when there’s an announcement for train doors opening, closing, train arriving etc. they still use the Text to speech voice since day one.
