I'm impressed. Great video on methods! This is the best way to catch woodchucks without a doubt. You are one of the few who has figured out the way to do it on their own. Those who are still using bait, "bait and wait," are missing out. What I would add to what you are doing is that there are now newer traps that are superior to the standard pan traps. In 2010 I invented a better trap that was patented in 2011, Comstock wire trigger, panless, powered fast closing double door cage traps. In our best year we got 142 woodchucks without bait. Noting the short comings of pan traps I incorporated many new features that make these escape proof, heavy duty traps a superior device with all components internal, nothing protruding. Simplicity and smaller is better. While the 1045 is 4320 cubic inches 10x12x36, our woodchuck/armadillo trap is only 2376 cubic inches, much smaller, measuring 9x11x24. Our trap is 45% smaller. We also have these traps in a 30 inch length with a built in flush mount door. Additionally, we offer a multipurpose trap with a wire nose cone sporting a bottom opening with three flaps that open to the side and end for positive sets. Love to talk trapping with you. www.comstockcustomcage.com. We trap chucks at dens, under fences, in trails and along structure.

Bait does work. Just make sure you use gloves when you put it in the trap. I agree that the trap should be near their path. I caught the last one with two cherry tomatoes.

I have had a lot of success catching squirrels, 15 so far in a week, using peanuts in the shell, in a much smaller Havahart trap, before noticing that the neighbor's woodchucks are out now and recently mowed down my daylilly shoots. So I borrowed my friend's larger single door Havahart that he had used for catching raccoons and woodchucks. After giving me a brief tutorial on how to set it, he told me to "Make sure you put lettuce in for bait or they just won't go in". So I thought I'd pass it along. He owns a farm and has trapped a lot of critters so that's experience talking. Of course it applies to Upstate NY woodchucks, though.

well done on your catches, you could maybe catch more if you make sure your trap is firm on the ground with a bit of soil in for them to walk on, I notice your trap kinda wobbles because not fully settled on the ground, animals don't like the feel of the trap wobbling too much, good luck 👍

Thanks for the informative video. I’ve used all sorts of bait as well but cantaloupe usually does the trick and within a few hours tops. I have two single door traps and maybe I’ll open up both back ends and put them together. They would have to step on both trigger plates but it might work.

I had a giant mom groundhog and two babies around 3 months old living under my next door neighbor's shed. They dug holes under the fence to eat the mulberries in my yard. They destroyed my neighbor's shed. I think the mom bailed, because I haven't seen her in a month. She was HUGE! I used an apple slice and a quarter of a peanut butter and blackberry jelly sandwich on 5 grain bread, plus some mulberries. Caught both of the younguns in one day. They ate the bait while waiting for me to relocate them 5 miles away out in the country, no houses or businesses in sight. I'm going to seal up the holes I can get to in my yard and the neighbor's. My neighbor is disabled and really couldn't do anything, so I took care of it.

You need to know your state laws on relocating woodchucks and other animals. In Kansas it is illegal to relocate them. They are vicious, destructive and invasive. On top of that, the large male that I caught had mange. Talking to the head of KS state wildlife there are two ways to exterminate them, 22mm or drowning. We had five of them under our shed that were destroying our garden. We used the Hav-A-hart trap with honeydew to catch them. In most cities you can't go the 22mm route.

@@lldav67not sure 22mm would work well in the country either as it will likely destroy the trap. I think you mean .22 caliber, as in .22 rimfire.

@@lldav67 If there are laws against discharging a real gun in your area, there should be no restrictions on a 1000 fps air rifle/pellet gun. A head shot while in the trap is very effective. Where I live It's illegal to relocate them.

I’m new to havahart traps so please excuse my ignorance but I’m curious as to why you say,“Always a good idea to leave the trap closed when you’re not monitoring it and overnight”. Overnight is when I would expect to use the trap as I never see these guys during the day. Am I not supposed to set the trap overnight?
