    I'm eat up in purple hulls right now. I forgot how good homegrown peas can be, but had my first mess this weekend.

    We grew pink eyed purple hull peas for the first time this summer. Next time we'll know to adjust the spacing as we bought the vining type.

    Planted top pick two weeks ago. Added innoculant at planting. 90% up in 3 days, 100% by 5. As always, Hoss germination tops what is listed!

    Facts..a staple indeed. Great with some cornbread and fried okra. Working on clearing another section for more space and will plant double next year. 😄

    Amen, Greg! Preach it! Great video! I’m about to put out my third succession of Lady Peas. (after this weather breaks next week) I’m with you 100% on everybody growing some variety or varieties!! You northern friends might have to wait for spring, without some help, but I hope everyone will eventually come around to field peas!!

    I have had cow peas all summer . I grow them over a arbor and let them hang down. They get about 3 ft long

    I’m going to give the peas a try. Ordered my seeds, inoculate and bug buster. My wife loves these, so I hope I get a bunch of them.

    Many decades ago, my mother brought me some peas she called crowder peas, which I cooked and loved. Haven't had any since then. Now that I am gardening (at 72!) I would like to plant some of those peas. As I recall, they were sort of wonky-shaped, not oval, not round, and a little larger than purple hulls or blackeyes. After watching your previous video about peas, am I understanding that crowders are zippers? Seems like it, but not sure, can you help?

    Now I know where to find a supply of lady finger peas! A few years ago they got so hard to find at the local feed and seed stores around here I just gave up looking for them. We like these peas as much, if not more than pink-eye, purple hull peas. Little harder to shell but more time sitin' in the air conditioning watching a baseball game on tv.

    We have a few double rows right now about 12" tall!! We grown them not so much forbus but to feed the pigs as they love rhem! As expensive as food is now anything we can grow to feed them cuts my costs.

    I planted my cowpea seeds 4 inches apart and got 100% germination. Time to thin. How far apart for each plant. I have Red Rippers and Texas Big Boys.

    Mine are up and beautiful in north florida- patiently waiting on blooms….. any idea an average of when blooms set after germination? I planted about this same time maybe even a few days before. Getting nervous they may not end up having time to produce for a harvest.

      This variety grows in an upright habit that produces 6-7″ pods on top of the plants, making harvesting easy.

    Can you plant cowpeas in zone 8a now? I thought it was for spring planting, ordered some red ripper peas but ended up not having the space this past spring but I do now. Fairly new Gardner here, only 3 years experience and haven’t tried any peas yet.

    I added some extended release Nitrogen to my garden plot after we tilled it up for our Fall garden, i have not had any beans planted in this plot for at least 4 years. I’m planting some Dwarf Hort bush beans. They may not do well, but I just want to see. it doesn’t get really cold here (TN)until December. Do I need to add an inoculant? Beings Ive already put Nitrogen down.

    I thought Cowpeas were a good option for the middle of summer because they’re so heat and drought tolerant.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  Před měsícem +1

      You can plant them then, we have just had better experience and less bug pressure her in zone 9 in the fall.
