  • James Nye reads extracts from 'Peter Owen: Not a Nice Jewish Boy - Memoirs of a Maverick Publisher'. The book, published by Fonthill Media, is available to order as a deluxe hardback from all good booksellers. An ebook is also available for Kindle.
Peter Owen, OBE, was born Peter Offenstadt in 1927 in Nuremburg. He escaped the horrors of the Nazi regime, migrating to London aged six where he became a British citizen. In 1951, while still in his early twenties, he started his eponymous publishing firm. The company specialised in literature in translation, pioneered books on social themes, and works by LGBTQ authors. He was still chairman of the company when he died, aged 89, in 2016.
His memoir-written, as he was partially sighted, with the assistance of James Nye-was published posthumously in 2021.
